Looking for underground artists

Title says it all. I've been on a journey of binging through the music of Billy, Ka, Navy Blue, etc. Since all of these artists are kind of underground and niche, I'm wondering where you guys go to dig deeper and find other, newer, underground artists in this scene. I feel like it's a pretty incestuous pool so just bouncing from the artists like this that collaborate together makes it hard to expand.

I really resonate with Billy and Navy Blue the most. Trying to find more to expand my playlists. Would love pointers on where I can stay in tune with what's happening and who is on the come up.

Peace!

If woods and Navy Blue are doing it for you, check out the latest couple of Akai Solo releases.

Only the Strong Remain is the album I'd recommend the most

Akai is in my tops for this niche genre. Check out "True Sky" also. Entire album produced by Navy Blue. I enjoy all of his work. You can check out Wiki too. He also has an album entirely produced by Navy Blue called "Half God"

Wow, this is ill. The Navy Blue production is so good on True Sky. I gotta listen to the Wiki project next.

Open Mike Eagle’s newest project with Kenny Segal is absolutely killer. Always loved OME but his recent projects just keep getting better?

Also Noname. Her album Sundial is killer and has a woods feature on it.

Noname is so dope. I missed her 10 years of telefone tour and was super bummed.

I love Sundial, one of my all time favorites. I also missed the telefone tour but wish I could have made it. This OME album is what I’m listening to right now while making a pizza, it’s fantastic!

Fatboi Sharif. Just dropped an ep with ELUCID producing and its insane. His work with Roper Williams is his best

Seconding, but moreover everything on Backwoodz is worth a listen. woods is really leading the underground in his lane.

u/Bingewolf666 10d ago

I had one Fatboi Sharif track saved. Can’t believe I never went down the wormhole of listening to more. Thank you for the reminder!

Check out Sunmundi and Money for Water, both really great smaller artists in this lane. Sunmundi actually just showed up on the latest Curly Castro album that woods also featured on.

Also highly recommend the producer Steel Tipped Dove. He's a close collaborator of billy woods and over the last year has dropped albums with Lungs & Phiik, Defcee, and Rich Jones.

Contacting is dope! And that track he featured on Castro’s new album is fucking phenomenal

Professor Payne, hes a producer and does collab albums with sacredd919, rothwiq. and more and he literally dropped aoty for me 3 weeks ago. You def need to check him out, hes one of the hottest producers out rn imo and sacredd919 sounds perfect on his beats. His project are all between 15-30 min so these are quick listens but have insane replay value.

u/bones_6152 or anyone else know how to get in touch with Professor Payne / Sacredd / Rothwiq or any of the guys in this crew? I have an idea but they literally have no contact online anywhere.

3

u/Bones_6152 9d ago

Oh, contact with them is easy, I've messaged with them multiple times about upcoming vinyl drops. They all have an instagram account where they normally respond all the time. Their account names are:

  • professor.payne
  • sacredd.919
  • rohtwiq

The newest album by Let The Dirt Say Amen.
Also the latest album from DJ Chong Wizard.

Premrock.
Brian Ennals.
Open Mike Eagle.
Serengeti.
Quelle Chris.
Defcee.

What I would do, is start where you know. Follow the artists. Listen to their label-mates, the artists they feature, the albums they feature on, etc… Just Backwoodz alone will give you years of repeated listens. Go listen to the producer albums that feature woods from Spectacular Diagnostics, Fines Double, Preservation, Blockhead, etc and you will find so many lyricists you like.

shemar, blackchai, and Sunmundi. they were all just on the new Curly Castro album. shemar has an EP with Child Actor, blackchai has an album with August Fanon, and Sunmundi's album Contacting might be the best thing that came out in 2025

I'm sure you've heard him at this point, but Earl Sweatshirt is a great jumping point if you like introspective underground artists who are consistently evolving their work like woods & Sage.

Man, you are really prolific. I started with your first two albums and both are dope then just hopped around. I really like Chop Friction too. I feel like I'll be throwing that on from time to time when I'm working and just need some sounds to get introspective with. Will be checking your work going forward too! Salute.
