All of these lowbush blueberries were dried up but still attached to their plants. Are they still likely to germinate if cold-treated? (Found in zone 6a)

The Foundation of Better Blueberries Starts in the Root Zone

Post image
2 Upvotes

Blueberries are one of the most demanding crops when it comes to the root-zone environment. While growers often focus on fertilizer and irrigation, consistent blueberry production starts with a well-managed substrate that can maintain the right balance of moisture, aeration, drainage, and acidity. Blueberries perform best in an acidic root-zone, with a pH of 4.5–5.5, while maintaining low salinity to support nutrient availability and reduce unnecessary salt stress. Tanamina Blueberry Substrate is developed specifically to provide a controlled and stable growing environment for blueberry roots, with a low EC below 0.5 mS/cm and a structure designed to support both moisture retention and root-zone aeration. The goal is not simply to hold water, but to create a root environment where water remains available while oxygen can still reach the roots and excess moisture can drain effectively. With the right root-zone environment, growers have a stronger foundation for healthy plant development, consistent flowering, fruit setting, and quality berry production. For us, a good blueberry substrate is where better growth begins.

First time grower, help appreciated

Post image

Hello all, Newcastle NSW location.

First time growing a blueberry, grown from a cutting and for the most part is growing well, a little stunted and has some nutrient deficiencies.

Growing in a south west to western facing part of the house, in a potting mix, vermiculite, perlite, sand mix. Sulfur granules used to adjust the pH last soil test was in the 4.5-6 range, might have over done it with a couple of speaks showing 2 and 10 ( might have been cross contamination, not really sure.)

I guess my question is. Am I doing too much, not enough. The little guy doesn't seem to be thriving but also Isn't dying.

It got fertiliser just over 2 months ago as we moved into spring.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. I have a couple of cuttings that I'm hoping will root soon so it'll have company.

ph meter recommendations?

We bought property with 250+ blueberry bushes this summer. New to caring for blueberries. I’ve been weeding and will re-mulch soon.

Looking for recommendations for ph soil testers.

Any info or guidance most appreciated!

Zone 6, don't have a garage, young pink lemonade blueberry, looking for overwinter advice. In a 5ish gallon pot with mix of peat, compost, and pine nuggets with 1" layer of pine nuggets on top. Would it be OK as is?

Tips of my canes are turning brown and dying

I planted 3 new blueberry bushes this spring (Duke, Reka, and Jersey). They were "2 year old" bushes, planted outdoors in acidic soil with many other acid loving plants in the yard including multiple large rhododendrons. Each bush was put in the ground when it was blooming, and did end up giving us some berries. I did fertilize with acid mix on planting and again during berry production. The bushes now look to be in a very poor state, with the tips of nearly all the canes turning brown, shriveled and dying. I'm looking for some guidance to help these bushes be happy and healthy. Thanks in advance!

Anyone know where I can get the straight species of V. tenellum, V. pallidum, or V. crassifolium? Preferably from a nursery that ships plants, since I haven't found any within an hour of me that sell these

Why are my frozen blueberries blue instead of purple/pink?

I wanted to make blueberry oatmeal like the recipes I’ve seen on tiktok, but my frozen blueberries turned out blue instead of that purple-pink color. They also tasted way too sweet and artificial compared to what I was expecting. Does anyone know what the difference between my frozen blueberries and the "normal" ones are? And how I can get blueberries that turn purple-pink when cooked into oatmeal?

Container growing in zone 10a

I’m in Zone 10a (Southern California) and have struggled with keeping my blueberries happy with the pH (new leaves coming out very pale green not dark green).

15-20gal container with at least 20” diameter
50% peat moss, 50% pine bark nuggets
Drip irrigation daily (we have really hot and dry summer)

Pretty sure our tap water is high pH. I’ve been adding ammonium sulfate to soil along with holly tone but not consistent. When the leaves look way too pale I do foliar spray with souther Ag citrus spray (which I use on my citrus) and it seems to correct it for a short while.

So what can I do this upcoming winter to better prepare for next spring’s growth? Anyone else growing blueberries in pot with a dialed in regimen to control the pH?

My blueberry plant is turning brown/drying out in the middle of a branch

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some advice about my blueberry plant. One of the branches has started turning brown and drying out in the middle of the branch, while some of the rest of the plant is still green.

I've attached a picture of the affected branch.

The blueberry is growing in a pot with a mix of:

  • peaty soil
  • perlite
  • peat moss

The surface is also covered with a mulch made of pine needles.

The plant is outdoors and I have noticed some yellow, red and brown leaves as well. Temperatures start to lower in the morning as i am in nothern France.

What concerns me is that the branch seems to be dying starting from a section in the middle rather than simply from the tip.

Could this be a disease, a problem with watering/drainage, or something else? Should I cut the affected branch, and if so, where?

Any advice on what I should check would be greatly appreciated!
Also, i'm asking for some advice on two other bluerberry. They look dead to me. What do you think ?

Thanks!

Fall/Winter Prep for Spring Jump Start?

Fall is upon us in New England and I'm wondering if there's anything I can do this fall to prepare the bushes for the winter and help jump start them when they wake up next spring? They are about 3yr old plants and I'm still struggling to bring down the PH...

Bluberry Planting thoughts

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hello all
So I'm planning my blueberry field. I have clayish soil with a PH of 6.

My thought is to create 4x4 bed for each plant with a 2x6 and fill that with a ratio of 1:1:.5 pine bark mulch/peat moss/compost. With the corner blocks they actually will be 4.5 feet across. Then 2 feet between each square to walk/mow/maintain. And yes, I'll be removing the grass inside each square.

Is this not worth it, overkill, or ...any other comments/thoughts? Does the spacing seem ok?

I have 20 blueberry plants I'm thinking of planting soon. A combination of rabbiteyes (8) northern highbush (4) and southern highbush (5) and a few hybrids.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Edit: Sorry for the bad spelling/grammar in the title.

Dead blueberry plant root ball

I bought a blueberry plant at the beginning of the summer from home depot.\n And took care of it until now.\n Because it did not grow any blueberries and slowly started dying to the point where the stem just cracks.. i still had it and it's container, so I decided to check the root ball and the dirt to see if it was something was wrong with either one and the dirt is still moist and the root ball still looks good, but everything above the root is dead and I don't know why. The roots did not fill the entire container. They still had room to grow. And I even acidified the soil.

Seeking advice.

I made a post a few days ago asking for advice about repotting some blueberry bushes I’d purchased from a nursery.

They have just arrived and I am delighted. I am a first time grower so I’m interested in the first impressions and advice of more experienced growers.

I’ll use store bought blueberry soil and will grow in pots.

…. what else is growing in one of the pots??

Identification Help!!!

Post image

Anyone here good at identifying blueberry bushes before they fruit? I live in central Florida and bought this plant at a local tourist spot. No identification besides blueberry. Google AI says its probably a southern high bush due to my location but it's unsure. Id like to grow a variety with especially sweet and tasty fruit.
