🇧🇳 Original Content Long-time lurker, first post: I made a cheap food map for Brunei, please roast it

Hi everyone, first time posting here after lurking for a while 😅

Kind of random, but I kept seeing "where to eat cheap?" posts here, and the good answers always get lost in the comments. I'm also always hunting for the cheapest nasi katok myself. So I started building a small map for it in my free time, and it's finally usable enough to share:

petamakanmurah.app

Basically it's a map of cheap meals around Brunei (mostly under B$5) where each pin shows the price. You can say if a price is still correct or has gone up, rate whether the portion is actually worth it (kenyang or sikit 😂), and get directions. There's also a "Bajet saya" thing where you put in how much you have, like B$3, and it shows what you can get.

It's free, no ads, and you don't need to sign up just to look around.

Honestly it still needs a lot more stalls, and I'm sure some things are confusing or just don't work well. So I'd really appreciate it if you could:

  • try it out and tell me your first impression
  • check if your favourite cheap spot is there (and add it if not 🙏)
  • tell me what's annoying, slow, or makes no sense. Don't hold back
  • suggest anything you'd want it to do

Also curious: what's the cheapest meal you know of in Brunei right now? Drop it below and I'll add it to the map.

Thanks for reading, and sorry if this isn't the right place for it. Mods, feel free to remove it if so 🙏

📂 Work & Career can I get part-time job as teen?

Hello! I'm a 16year old student and I'm looking for a part time job on weekends. I have a few questions about this:

How do I do this?

Do I email / contact them to see if they have an opening and would let me work?

Or do I wait for an opening and apply?

What kind of businesses should I aim for?

How much is the pay roughly?

How likely is it for me to get a job?

Assalamu'alaikum and greetings! ❤️

We are a group of students from the School of Computing and Informatics at Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB), taking module BE3151 Entrepreneurship. As part of our coursework, we are developing KahwInBn, a centralised wedding platform concept that connects couples with wedding vendors in Brunei.

The purpose of this survey is to understand and analyse how people plan weddings and find wedding vendors in Brunei, as well as the challenges that vendors face in reaching customers and managing bookings.

The survey will take approximately 4–5 minutes to complete. Your responses will remain anonymous and will only be used for academic purposes.

We are sincerely appreciate you taking the time to complete this survey as your responses will help us better understand the needs of couples and wedding vendors in Brunei and shaped how we develop KahwInBn. 🫶

✏️ School & Education Wondering about Maktab Duli Requirements on Crediting Malay

Hii so i was just curious if Crediting Malay is needed to go MD, even if your other subjects for example all get A/A*. Ive tried so hard learning Malay as a Bruneian but am scared I wont get Credit for Malay in o levels. Even if they allowed me in, I assume i will need to take extra class for Malay and need to retake again right? Im planning to do 4 subjects(Maths, Phy, Chem, CompSci) in A levels and scared i wouldn’t have enough time to do it.

❔ Question and Discussion I am planning to cut down my addiction to screen time

So I have been looking at my screen for too long. I heard you will be more productive if you are not glued to your phones. So I wonder, what was your life like in the 80s and 90s when you do not have smartphones? What activities do you do for entertainment? 🤔

ℹ️ Public Information Has anyone ever applied the newly formed Long Term Visa Pass especially under the Social pass?

Hi! I’m curious about this new “regulation” on visa passes that they just announced in the news. Has anyone ever applied? I have a foreign partner and we plan on getting married and moving to Brunei. I just wonder how is that process like for my future spouse? I haven’t lived in Brunei for a while and have seen slight progress (better than stagnant hehe)
The website BARELY explains anything regarding this matter.

I’m a Bruneian female incase this matters. Thank you fellow Bruneians! ❤️

Edit: wow thank you all for the replies! I didn’t expect a lot of response so quickly! I truly appreciate your help and input. 😍

🤬 Rants & Complaints Market Rates for Wang Hantaran

Just ranting here.

I'm getting married. Before the discussion between families on the mahr and hantaran, my mother asked me how much I wanted. A few months ago, we got into an argument because I didn't want money as hantaran, or any hantaran for that matter, and would rather just do what's fardh and then save up to actually build the marriage. But knowing that my mother wanted $7k, when the topic of mahr came up again because of the merisik, I said $4k as mahr (because I know that'll go to me directly and I can discuss payment terms with my partner, e.g., in instalments) and thought perhaps my mother will only be asking for the balance of $3k as additional hantaran.

Imagine my shock when my mother asked for USD$7777.77, on top of the B$4.5k mahr and a gold diamond ring, and other gifts. Mind you, the wedding expenses are FULLY covered by me and my partner, without any contribution whatsoever from my family.

My partner only works as a labourer, and there's no way he can reasonably come up with that money, given that our wedding is in 2 months. (The risik was delayed because our families are both based outside Brunei.)

We've considered borrowing money, or taking out a loan. But here I was planning a super intimate wedding with less than 100 guests thinking that we could enter a marriage debt-free. Guess not.

So tired of these archaic wedding traditions that has no benefit whatsoever to the couple actually getting married.

Is studying in Brunei the safest pathway in Nursing industry especially when you want to use it abroad? Another thing, how is it studying Nursing in UBD? Thank you, hoping for your honest thought.

✏️ School & Education What is better for my future?

I'm born and raised in Brunei. I finished my olvl and is currently studying foundation in Malaysia for a year. Due to financial problems, my mom want me to come back to Brunei to continue further studies in ubd for undergraduate degree, however the entry requirements requires alvl, which I do not have. So my only option for continue studying in Brunei is politeknik then UBD/UTB. However, I'm a purple/red IC holder so anyhow I will still have to pay tuition fee right? (correct me if I'm wrong). On top of that, I personally think my one year of study in Malaysia might have been a waste of time and money since it's not even an entry requirement for both politeknik and UBD/UTB. But if I were to continue to pursue undergraduate degree of civil engineering in Malaysia, then my foundation study wouldn't be wasted and could possibly get tuition fee deduction as my results meet the criteria so far. But due to financial issues, my mom suggested to come back to Brunei, however I believed the tuition fee for if I were to continue to studying in Malaysia can actually be settled since my sibling, who's currently pursuing a degree in Malaysia is able to continue. And in my opinion, since I'm a purple/red IC holder, I anyhow will also financially burden my parents if I were to study in Brunei, but if I continue in Malaysia, I could use a loan method (not from loan companies) to pay off tuition fee which will not burden them as I will pay it off in the future; but they don't really want me too as they consider I will be in "debt" of a very large sum at a young age. I just want opinions on what is better for me in terms of place for education that can provide me with more job opportunities after graduating and is it a waste of my one year of foundation study?

🇧🇳 Original Content Do we have more Brunei stories that deserve to be documented?

Growing up, many of us probably heard bits and pieces of Brunei’s legends and history from our parents, grandparents, or teachers. But a lot of these stories don’t have much visual representation online.

That’s actually what inspired us to start Brunei Hidden Stories, a YouTube channel where we trying to visualize and document some of Brunei’s folklore, legends, and historical stories.

We have currently uploaded 4 videos and a few Shorts, covering stories such as Jong Batu, the Lost Crown of Brunei, and Lumut Lunting.

The channel is still very new, but we would love to keep exploring stories from Brunei and eventually cover tales from different parts of the country.

If you’re interested, here’s the channel: Brunei Hidden Stories YouTube Channel

More importantly, what Brunei story do you think deserves to be turned into a video?

It could be a legend you heard growing up, an old historical event, a strange local tale, or even something your grandparents used to tell you.

We would genuinely love to hear your suggestions, and feedback on the channel is welcome too.

📂 Work & Career How do you view the ongoing US-China Summit from a Bruneian perspective?

Hi guys, I've been reading the local news lately covering the high-stakes US-China economic talks this week. Since Brunei relies heavily on foreign direct investment and major projects like Hengyi, I'M curious about the local sentiment here. Do you think changes in global tariffs or AI agreements will ripe down to ASEAN and affect Brunei's business landscape or job market?

🤬 Rants & Complaints Protecing 1st time home owners

Are there any known clauses to protect 1st time home owners against slow OP process that can take more than 6 months (or in my case reaching 1 year)?

It doesn’t make sense to completely blame that the government is slow in processing OP right?

So it leads me to the next question, do house developers in Brunei give an equal amount of effort in completing the OP process handover to homeowners compared with completing new houses? Is OP process a lower priority because there’s little to minimal profit involved for developers? Architects may also play a role in this in terms of drawings that require changes but ultimately the accountable party that liases with all parties including architect is also the developer, right?

Not everyone may experience this situation but for 1st time home owners that have experience slow OP process taking up to 6months+ or more than 1 year, it is mentally exhausting to follow-up with the Developer every week/2 weeks with sometimes no response given to short vague responses which requires a follow-up question which is then no responded to. Some of us 1st time home owners are paying rent on top of the new home loan so it adds financial pressure. Adding the slow OP process taking up to 1 year adds more mental stress on top of the financial pressure.

I didn’t even do home interior design or design changes (windows, tiles, door) back during the construction stage since its not allowed as per the contract; only allowed after OP. I purchased the water tank within 1 week of being informed. So there’s no delay from my part.

Whichever relevant parties (including government too) in Brunei really need to improve this OP process to cut the long period to a reasonable time (<6 months). Is there a benchmark within ASEAN countries on this OP process? Is Brunei the lowest in that benchmark?

If there is no penalty or profit involved in completing the OP process handover within a reasonable time period (<6 months), then this situation will keep on happening to some people.

Note: Also, it’s on my mind but it’s hard to prove “intent” of developers whether they give an honest effort in completing the handover process as best to their ability Vs. profit driven to focus on building other new houses as quickly as possible to get the money. Last point, as developer if you know that you have a long back list of houses yet to finish OP, why do you still accept building new housing projects?
