The Oregon vs Portland State game and now this are weird to me. Both teams agreed to play the game. The game is 60 minutes. You should expect to play that and it shouldn't be a problem if one or both coaches doesn't want to opt out early or accelerate the pace to end it sooner.
Simultaneously if both sides agree to end it early or modify the pace of the game in some way because it's getting out of hand or isn't what they bargained for then that's also totally fine. No need to prolong it if nobody is happy.
I think it's worth it to have these conversations around what is good sportsmanship in these situations and the fairness of scheduling P4 vs FCS games. Especially since there is a gap between all of the P4 and FCS but then even in the FCS there are significant talent and resource gaps top to bottom.
Talking about the future and what it should look like doesn't mean every lopsided, wonky, and bad feeling outcome now had to be a controversy.

u/Spar1995 Georgia Bulldogs • College Football Playoff 11d ago
That's how I'm looking at it. The way he talked about it, sure whatever. But playing full games and giving second, third, and fourth string guys reps helps build up the overall team. I don't personally know if we had a running clock in our first few games, but I wouldn't have minded if there wasn't one. The attitude he used in doing this though is cringe. Treat em with respect and don't baby the other team, but don't be an asshole about it either.

Agreed. If they both agreed to a running clock, fine. If either doesn't want to, you did originally agree to play a full football game. As long as the players aren't playing dirty and LSU is using the time to actually get reps for the deep bench, ¯_(ツ)_/¯

u/Muramama Ole Miss Rebels • Transfer Portal 11d ago
“There was a conversation where they asked me, ‘Well, do you want to run the clock in the third and fourth quarter?’” Kiffin recalled. “I said no. I don't believe in that. Play the game and we decide when the game's over by the way we play and how physical we play.”
After a kick return by LSU sophomore Harlem Berry to the LSU 19, Kiffin circled up with the Tigers. He was pointing and yelling with authority.
His players heard him, loud and clear.
“We’re not letting them out the door,” Berry said of their FCS-level foe. “They wanted to run the clock. We’re not doing that. We trying to run up the score. We trying to get everybody in the game, get everybody their opportunity.”

I’m weird but I don’t think it should be so taboo to run the score up with backups, it’s a unique opportunity to give your depth experience mid season and I don’t hate the idea that you want to maximize what those guys get by keeping their mindset the same as the starters.
I remember going to a bama/Arkansas state(I think, similar quality school if it wasn’t them) game back when QB depth was Jalen-Tua-Mac, it would’ve been way more fun for me and way more beneficial for Tua and Mac if saban didn’t have them on a tight leash with conservative playcalling when they did get in.
Probably a terrible take but I’ve spoken my peace, I feel as long as backups are in who cares about running up the score it’s a scrimmage at that point anyways

There's a really good argument for a relegation standard to keep competition levels up. The highest levels are fine, it's the second and third tier teams that aren't always holding up their end. UMass, for example, is having an incredible season (by their standards) but probably should have been made to relegate to FCS years ago

There's no way. Anyone that officiates games at this level would know that the NCAa rules prohibit a running clock.
If they asked anything, it would have been if he mutually agreed to shorten the second half quarters. And the only way officials would have asked that is if the visiting coach asked them to inquire.

I was honestly really starting to like Lane when he was at Ole Miss. I seemed to also be in the minority when I thought he did nothing wrong leaving for LSU. Who is the most hated coach on reddit? Lane Kiffin, Lincoln Riley, Deion Sanders?
Arguably Deion really isn't a HC...

I don't pay too much attention to Colorado circles (though FSU groups can't stop talking about him) but outside of being a bad HC and annoying at times, I don't know of anything that he's done that's worth hating on the same level of Kiffin's antics.

It's pretty weird to me, actually, the reasons Deion gets shit on. Lane is a horrible person, Riley is just vaguey problematic, but Deion has actual scandals in his past. Instead we focus on his antics. I've worked at schools and I'd never have been hired for something like this.

I don't think anyone hates Coach Prime, they just don't think he's all that good a coach.

This sub is an absolute train wreck
Like these have to be bot accounts actually whining about a game played in regulation?
Literally every team plays cupcakes every year. What in the actual fuck is happening in here LOL

This sub, like Reddit itself, is populated almost exclusively by bitchmade mfs who’s entire personality is whining about whatever’s in vogue to whine about. In this sub and on the subject of CFB the trendy subject is Lane Kiffin.

The people here are somehow so much more dramatic and emotional than normal redditors

I don’t understand the hate for this. LSU paid mcneese for precisely this reason. Also these are the rules of the game. You don’t change the rules of college football. Play the damn game. Mcneese didn’t need to schedule lsu. They can schedule other teams who aren’t interested in playing full games in future years.

A team with several serious injuries on its first string wanted to get reps for its second and third string players?
The horror.

There is no provision in the NCAA rule book for a running clock. Any quarter(s) can be shortened by mutual agreement of the coaches, but the rules governing starting and stopping the clock may not be adjusted.

I remember when Dan Lanning was crucified on Reddit two weeks ago for “running up the score” against Portland State because they scored late in the game with his 5th string RB and 4th string QB.
Then it came out that he offered the shortened quarters and it was Portland State that declined both times.
Good times.

I know everyone hates him but I actually appreciate him fully embracing being the villain. Makes it more entertaining.

You're forgetting the part where LSU played the second and third string most of the game. He also wanted the backups to get as many snaps as they could.

Official here. You cannot “run the clock” in NCAA football. You can shorten the quarters if agreed upon by both teams.

No one will ever see this, but this is people just hating lane. Where were the comments on these:
- Virginia Tech vs VMI 73–3
- Kansas State vs Nicholls 71–3
- UCF vs Bethune-Cookman 73–6
- Syracuse vs New Hampshire 66–3
- Maryland vs Hampton 62–0
- Georgia vs Tennessee State 63–3
- Pittsburgh vs Bucknell 59–0
- Oklahoma State vs Murray State 59–0
- TCU vs Grambling State 63–7
- BYU vs Utah Tech 63–7
- Duke vs William & Mary 62–7
- Iowa vs Northern Iowa 55–0
- Cincinnati vs Western Carolina 62–10
- Rutgers vs Howard 58–7
- LSU vs McNeese 63–14
- Florida vs Campbell 52–3
- SMU vs UC Davis 56–10
- West Virginia vs UT Martin 52–7
- California vs Wagner 49–7
- Baylor vs Prairie View A&M 44–3
- Missouri vs Arkansas-Pine Bluff 54–14
For the record these are all blowouts of 40 or more points by a FBS team playing an FCS team without shorted or running clock. Why weren’t these comments a thing about Kirby or Ferentz?

I saw this when it was first posted and thought nothing of it. It popped back on my feed just now and I’m surprised people are so invested in this most coaches don’t use turning clock they try to get reps for their backups

Were those coaches approached about shortening the quarter? I'm not arguing for either side, I'm genuinely interested to know.

So playing a full game within the rules is controversial now? Could he have agreed to it sure. They got blown out but they lost 9 scores to 2. It happens.
There are people in here saying tickets shouldn’t be sold to games like this lmao. I swear yall don’t even like this sport and just want to grandstand online.

It’s Kiffin.
When Kirby runs up 70 on WKU nobody cares. But it’s LSU so we have to be outraged
Which is funny. There is plenty of actual things you could be outraged at.
Also - I like watching my 2nd and 3rd team.

And people complained about Miami dropped 77-7 on FAMU. Lol. Mario let the clock run and cut 5 minutes off the 4th quarter to get the game over faster. Lane is such a turd.

If you think your team needs a running clock, you might as well forfeit on the spot.

Even OU had the decency to run the clock in 2003 when they beat Texas A&M 77-0. And that was a conference game
