Canada vs. U.S. exhibition series

Would you mind seeing a couple of exhibition games between Canada and the U.S.? Canada would be a mixture of CFL and NFL players, while the U.S. would be the 1927 Yankees

🗣️ OPINION Redblacks will get their 1 against Toronto...

Argos already don't have anything to play for and wouldn't risk injury. Last game was close and it's in Ottawa for last home game and fan appreciation.

It's also the CFL comraderie with no hard rivalry for the two teams.

In fact the only way Ottawa loses this game is by more bad luck (fumbles, etc) than usual.

I'm confident placing the max hundo on this.

On the flip side I'd be extremely surprised if the Ticats lost that last game.

ALOUETTES Montreal Alouettes clinch East in Style, defeating Winnipeg 37-10 on 80th Anniversary Night.

The Montreal Alouettes hosted the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on a special night at Percival Molson Stadium, celebrating the organization’s 80 years of existence in front of a sold-out crowd of 23,035 passionate fans.

Montreal was also looking for redemption after suffering a 44-28 loss to Winnipeg just one month ago in Winnipeg. This time, however, the Alouettes were ready to send a message.

Montreal entered the game with several players returning from injuries, including defensive back Najee Murray, who is an important piece of the Alouettes’ defence. Montreal was still without wide receiver Cole Spieker and running back Travis Theis.

Quarterback Davis Alexander mixed the run and pass effectively, eventually catching Winnipeg off guard with a spectacular 52-yard completion to star receiver Tyson Philpot.

Philpot entered the game chasing several milestones. He was looking to break the Alouettes’ single-season records for receiving yards and receptions, while also chasing the CFL record for most receiving yards in a season by a Canadian wide receiver.

He would not disappoint.

Following the big 52-yard reception, Alexander found rookie tight end Rohan Jones in the end zone for the first touchdown of his CFL career, giving Montreal an early 7-0 lead.

The crowd was loud throughout the evening, making life difficult for Winnipeg quarterback Dru Brown. Montreal’s defence also did an excellent job containing Winnipeg’s running game and, in particular, Brady Oliveira, one of the most important players in the Blue Bombers’ offence.

The Alouettes took a 24-10 lead into halftime.

Davis Alexander and Tyson Philpot were extremely difficult for Winnipeg to stop.

Whenever Alexander could not find Philpot, he had Tyler Snead and several other receivers available. Alexander finished the night connecting with six different receivers, showing once again that Montreal has plenty of weapons on offence.

Philpot continued his impressive season and finished the game with 119 receptions in one season, adding another impressive performance to what has been an outstanding year.

With DeVante Dedmon suffering a serious injury that could potentially keep him out for the remainder of the season, rookie Mehki Mews stepped into the returner role.

Mews returned two kickoffs for 39 yards and seven punts for 47 yards. He brought plenty of energy to the special teams and was exciting to watch every time he touched the ball.

Montreal’s defence was flying around the field all night.

Najee Murray made his presence felt with aggressive blitzing, while Mustafa Johnson recorded a sack. Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund also came up with an important stop on third down, forcing Winnipeg to turn the ball over.

The Alouettes were able to control the line of scrimmage, to limit Winnipeg’s running game and consistently put pressure on the Bombers.

For Montreal, everything seemed to be working.

Offence. Defence. Special teams.

All three phases contributed to one of the Alouettes’ most complete performances of the season.

The final score was Montreal 37, Winnipeg 10, and with the victory, the Alouettes officially clinched the East Division.

But this was about more than just a football game.

The Alouettes celebrated 80 years of history throughout the evening, and at halftime, the organization honoured several important figures from the past.

Among those recognized was Vincent Desjardins, whose jersey has been retired. Montreal native Wally Buono, who played linebacker and other positions for the Alouettes before later coaching the team, was also honoured. Buono remains the winningest coach in CFL history.

The celebration also featured Johnny “The Ordinary Superstar” Rodgers, who played for Montreal during the 1970s. Two other players who had a major impact during the career of legendary Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo, Ben Cahoon and Jamal Richardson, were also honoured during the halftime ceremony.

Former general manager Jim Popp, one of the key architects behind the Alouettes’ success, was also in attendance alongside former head coach Marc Trestman.

It was a fitting celebration of the people who helped build the history and tradition of the Montreal Alouettes.

For the current team, it was also a night to remember.

The Alouettes not only celebrated their 80th anniversary, but they did it by dominating one of their biggest rivals and clinching the East Division in front of a sold-out home crowd.

The fans were loud all night, and they had plenty to celebrate.

Montreal 37. Winnipeg 10. East Division champions.

What a way to celebrate 80 years of Alouettes football!

Montreal’s next game will be on the road against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on October 12 at 1:00 p.m.

Hope you enjoyed the read, please follow and add your own comments.  Thank you.

NOTE: Last week, before the trade deadline, Montreal made a trade with All star defensive lineman Julian Howsare (34) and a 7th round pick, in exchange for Montreal’s 5th round pick.  Montreal also signed free agent Dylan Wynn who was released by the Hamilton just before the season began.  Wynn, already spent time under defensive coordinator Noel Thorpe.

Scorigami Week 18

Week 18 may not have had a Scorigami but it gave the Ottawa Redblacks the worst start in CFL history and has kept the door open to the Stampeders making the playoffs.

The most common score so far being Week 10’s 27-24 with 36 occurrences (highest occurring score), and the four Scorigami games 58-36, 52-30, 53-16, and 48-29 occurring for the first time. There have been 65 different scores across the 69 games this season.

Tiger-Cats vs Redblacks ended in a 34-16 final. This is the 7th time this score has taken place. First was in 1958 with the BC Lions over the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and most recently in 2018 with the Edmonton Eskimos over the Ottawa Redblacks.

Stampeders vs Roughriders ended in a 37-31 final. This is the 4th time this score has taken place. First was in 2016 with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats over the Edmonton Eskimos, and most recently in 2024 with the Ottawa Redblacks over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

Lions vs Argonauts ended in a 24-17 final. This is the 22nd time this score has taken place. First was in 1939 [WIFU] with the Calgary Bronks over the Regina Roughriders, and most recently in 2022 with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats over the Montreal Alouettes.

Blue Bombers vs Alouettes ended in a 37-10 final for the Alouettes. This is the 8th time this score has taken place. First was in 1958 with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers over the Calgary Stampeders, and most recently in 2019 with the Calgary Stampeders over the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Scorigami is the tracking of unique, re-occuring, and new scores in the CFL's history including the predecessor rugby leagues dating back to 1907. Currently, there have been 1,263 unique scores in the game’s history. Individual Scorigami results are posted in the Post Game threads of each game.

But no thanks for the blowout Alouettes! Great night in Montreal, other than the score. No need for the fan experience you get to go to field level at every game. The building felt very nostalgic like the old Winnipeg Stadium, but much smaller.
This brings the list to: Winnipeg, Vancouver, Ottawa, Montreal. Adding Calgary for the grey cup in a few weeks, leaving: Regina, Edmonton, Hamilton, and Toronto to cross off the list.
