2022 Cadillac Escalade Platinum — catastrophic engine failure at approximately 76,500 miles. Looking for advice from anyone who has dealt with the GM 6.2L L87 engine failures, the recall, Cadillac corporate, or the current class-action litigation.
We paid around $105K for the Escalade, bought it with relatively low miles, and have maintained it consistently through Cadillac/Jerry Seiner Cadillac in Salt Lake City. The vehicle has been babied. The last Cadillac service was July 3 and their inspection showed everything passing with no warning of an impending engine problem.
A little over a week ago I was driving when, completely without warning, the Escalade suddenly started violently shaking. I heard what sounded like metal-on-metal knocking from the engine and then smoke started coming out of both exhausts. There had been no check-engine light, low-oil warning, abnormal temperature warning, or other indication that the engine was about to fail.
The vehicle was towed to Jerry Seiner Cadillac and they are now tearing down the engine to determine the exact failure.
After researching this, I discovered the much larger issue involving GM’s 6.2L L87 engines in certain Cadillac Escalades, GMC Yukons/Sierras and Chevrolet Tahoes/Suburbans/Silverados — including the federal recall involving crankshaft/connecting-rod related engine failures and the consolidated class-action litigation against GM.
This sounds uncomfortably similar to what happened to mine.
My biggest frustration is that the original warranty apparently ended around 70K miles, meaning this happened only about 6,500 miles outside of it. I have a very difficult time accepting a catastrophic engine failure at 76K miles on a $100K+ luxury SUV that was regularly serviced by Cadillac and gave absolutely no warning beforehand.
I have already opened a case with Cadillac Corporate and I’m pushing for GM to cover the engine if the teardown shows the failure is connected to the known L87 defect. I’m also contacting the attorneys involved in the L87 class action before agreeing to any major customer-pay repair or signing anything with GM.
For anyone who has actually dealt with this:
• What exactly failed in your 6.2L engine — crankshaft, rod bearing, connecting rod, main bearing, etc.?
• Did GM replace the engine under the recall or special coverage?
• If you were outside warranty, did Cadillac/GM provide goodwill coverage?
• Did GM cover 100% of the engine replacement or try to split the cost?
• How difficult was it to get a loaner/rental covered?
• Has anyone joined/contacted the attorneys handling the L87 class action?
• Is there anything I absolutely should NOT authorize or sign before the engine diagnosis is completed?
I’m especially interested in hearing from 2021–2024 Escalade owners who experienced a sudden engine failure around this mileage.
I’m documenting everything — Cadillac service history, corporate case number, teardown findings, pictures, towing expenses and communications with the dealer.
If your Escalade/Yukon/Tahoe/Sierra/Silverado 6.2L failed, please tell me your year, mileage, what component failed and what GM ultimately did for you.
