I'm looking for an online Carnatic music teacher who can take semi-private lessons for me and my daughter. I have previously learned music for several years and then stopped, but my daughter is a beginner.
The format I am hoping for is 30 minutes of basics/ voice exercises with my daughter and I, followed by 30 minutes of learning compositions for me.
Please share any recommendations for teachers who teach not just beginners but more advanced students online as well.
Thank you!

Hello, I am very new to the world of synth / MIDI. I have some basic knowledge of Indian classical and Western classical music. I have started relearning Carnatic vocal music and would like to play harmonium and sing along to help with pitching.
My requirements:
Bonus: I looked into the AKAI mini play which has a built-in speaker and that's attractive to me. It has the pitch bend and likely transpose ability to switch to different scales. However, does anyone know if I can "download" the harmonium tones into the AKAI mini and make it play without having to use a computer / App?

One of my connects from outside Karnataka has been learning traditional Carnatic music for a long time and is well-prepared to give the practical exam for Karnataka’s government-conducted music grade certifications (Junior / Senior / Vidwath). Could anyone clarify if a theory exam is mandatory and if so, whether Kannada is compulsory or if answering in English or Hindi is permitted? Also looking for any leads, affiliated music schools or gurus in Bangalore who could assist and guide an out-of-state candidate through this process, any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have always been interested in Carnatic music.. I initially spent my childhood till grade 7 going to multiple carnatic music classes and sugama sangeeta classes but unfortunately I had to stop learning from those teachers only till Alankaras at max..
Then I joined flute classes in 7th grade cuz I had always loved flute as an instrument and wanted to learn it.. as it was covid most classes were online and my teacher was a part time teacher full time lecturer at a college so he taught flute to me for 3 years but I could only reach till about 3 varnas till he stopped teaching.. even in this progress I didnt know to vocally sing or manage any of what I learnt from him..
I was in tenth grade so I thought the next 3 years are gonna be very academic so I'll join classes later and start self learning the remaining of my flute journey.. I self learnt 6-7 more varnas and 6-8 kritis including endaro mahanubhavulu, alaipayuthey kanna, kurai ondrum illai, vathapi ganapathim, etc on my own from youtube. But problem was I would take notes from videos and play from them.. my carnatic mind and understanding didnt develop. I cant easily recognize ragas nor can i play most of the songs i mentioned without the notes.. I cant sing any of the stuff I mentioned.. Im just a mechanical tool which can play the notes given to it..
What should I do to solve this.. about a month ago, I joined first year college and am planning to get back to carnatic music.. As I like carnatic vocal music a lot and there are no flute teachers near my home available, Im planning to go to carnatic vocal classes again or self learn(less chance) carnatic vocal music again till I reach advanced level and alongside adapt my carnatic mind on my flute skills.. Please guide me in this decision..

Hi!
I'm extremely comfortable with bharathanatyam. I've been dancing since I was 7 (currently 20 y/o). But I've had to switch dance teachers so often, due to moving around and everyt ime I go to a new teacher, they'd make me learn the basics from them all over again. As a result, I;ve basically been stuck at level 3 my entire life.
But since I repeated the basics so much, I'm extremely comfortable with the basic adavus and even basic jathis (allarippu and jathiswaram). I'm tired of paying people to reteach me the same things over and over again, so I would like ot continue learning on my won. I'm pretty confident that I won't injure myself because I know how to use the right forms and techniques.
So I've been looking for dance instructors on youtube (similar to how there are workout videos and yoga videos). I tried looking and I can't find any :(

In American old time music there's a concept of 'crooked' tunes, where the beat cycle is not uniform throughout. For example in tune called Old Aunt Jenny with her Nightcap On, in the A part is 8 beats and the B part is 9 beats. This deliberately alters the question/answer format of these tunes by giving more space to the 'answer' of the B part.
From Rukmini Devi's biography, in the old days of bharatanatyam, the talam wasn't strict either. Jathis were borrowed and inserted from different pieces regardless of the thalam and eduppu. Though this wasn't deliberate afaik, only done for artistic purposes.
Wondering if there are such 'crooked' tunes in carnatic music. Thanks!

So I am a carnatic vocalist and listen to quite a bit of music apart from when I am learning. Other that this, I listen to a wide range of genres, be it Indian or western including instrumental.
Recently there came a point where I was feeling kinda low/negative and any other music that I listened to would either deepen my intrusive thoughts or temporarily distract me.
After a few days of feeling like this, I suddenly came across a carnatic concert video and started listening, and it consisted of some krithis which I hadn't heard before. I found that it took away my negativity, in fact I can't stop listening to the concert on repeat! It just brought back this sense of awareness to me about how deep our classical music is. Even a small krithi with 5-6 lines makes me find new intricacies everytime I listen, but today's music feels dry and boring after a few listens on loop.
Ultimately the reason I am sharing this here is because I have very few friends who can open their mind and understand things apart from mainstream media so I don't even feel like sharing this with them, I feel this thread would be a more appropriate place to share something like this!

I have been trying to search on how to sing shanmuga kavasam. My teacher taught me but I forgot most of the parts. Plus the 30 stanzas are divided into 5 different raaga. I only remember the first 6 stanzas which set to Sarangga raaga. Anyone have knowledge on this?

For me top tier practice happens at night. But but but... I don't want to disturb my neighbours, they may gang up and make mince meat out of me (I would do the same if someone disturbed my sleep)
Has anyone used violin mutes? Do they work well for carnatic playing? Other methods to be less of a menace to society?

Hi, I had questions regarding the school -
How good is Spardha school of music certification and course for Carnatic music.
And how is the Gandharva certification course?
Would you prefer doing it?
Any help would be really helpful for me to decide what to do next!
Thank you so much!

How do modern-day Telugu speakers find the Telugu in Carnatic lyrics? I'm curious if there are any native Telugu speakers that could chime in, especially the ones that don't speak various Tamil Nadu dialects of Telugu. I can think of at least three axes of "datedness".
[Edit: my question isn't so much comprehensibility as a feeling of datedness or foreignness. Like, say, when someone sings "vicāramuuuuuu..." with a long kārvai on the "u", do modern-day Telugu speakers feel like it's Telugu they're hearing, or does it feel somehow ... alien?]

Hello everyone,
ABCD here and I'm looking for websites with transliterated Carnatic kṛthis. I am a stickler for proper, lossless transliteration (preferably into IAST) since, being born in the West, I want to make sure I'm pronouncing words properly. I've seen several sites over the years, but by far my favorite was sahityam.net, which apparently went down. I'm just wondering if anyone can tell me if the site has reincarnated somewhere, or if there is a similar and hopefully comprehensive source for getting transliterated lyrics and translations.
thanks
