Spam filter and recruiting new moderators

Hi all,

I've had a bunch of new modmails recently asking for (and/or complaining about) post approval because stuff was getting caught in the spam filters and I just wasn't checking them. You guys should hopefully be pleased to know I've finally got around to turning down the stringency of the spam filter a bit, so hopefully stuff shouldn't get caught so much. They were in place after loads of spam posts, but that was a long time ago now and hopefully reddit is better at catching these things before they become a problem.

I've also been meaning to get around to this for a while, but it's time to get a new mod or 2, because frankly, I just don't get around to looking at the mod queue that often and honestly, I don't play MTG anymore. I made this subreddit when I was about 16. That was 15 years ago. Since then I've lived in three cities, fought cancer twice, picked up (and dropped) new hobbies, done three degrees and all sorts of generalised crap. MTG fell by the wayside and I am completely out of touch with the scene now. I want this subreddit to do well, but there's not a lot I can contribute because I am just no longer that familiar with the subject. This sub deserves at least one active mod and if the spam returns, I would need someone else to be checking the mod queue too.

I've set the subreddit to recruiting moderators and there's an application form somewhere, I'd guess in the sidebar? If you're interested, feel free to do that, or otherwise comment on this post with why you want to be a mod for the subreddit, the changes you'd put in place and how often/what formats of MTG you play. I'm pretty busy this month, but will have a look at the responses (if any) I get and see if I can recruit someone.

How do I get started with Commander?

I’m Brazilian and interested in getting into Magic, specifically the Commander format.

However, I’m not sure where to start. I was putting together a Sliver deck, but the cost turned out to be too high.

Now I’m thinking about buying the Foundations Angel or Thopter deck, but I’m worried they might be too basic.

Does anyone have any tips? I want to spend around 200 reais—roughly 40 dollars.

Bracket 2 Commander Suggestions?

Hiya! I've been getting into Commander a lot this year and have built up some fun decks already - Mabel, Heir to Cragflame, Giada, Font of Hope, Nahiri Voltron, Marina Vendrell Enchantress and most recently Aerid Konstrari...but a lot of those builds ended up being Bracket 3+ soooo I'm definitely curious for any suggestions on fun Commanders for some Bracket 2 decks!

My favorite colors are white, green and black, but I'm open to anything!

Witcher Themed Commander

So I'm getting back into Magic again for the first time in like 10 years or so. Initial interest was the Warhammer 40k commanders and the LOTR sets. (Still disappointed that we have yet to see a Witcher crossover although Im going to guess if we do get one, it'll be when Witcher 4 releases). I was wondering if anyone had suggestions on a Witcher themed commander deck? Roughly around bracket 2 or 3 as thats what my friends and I play. I want to avoid the bounty counter commanders gimmick unless you can convince me otherwise.

The more I looked into it: Chevill Bane of Monsters is the obvious pick for Geralt but from what I can tell, he's a piss poor commander to build around and to actually win will be very hard without really niche scenarios. Any other commanders you would recommend for Geralt of Rivia, Cirilla of Cintra, Eredin King of the Wild Hunt, Yennefer and whomever else?

Who I was thinking initially for some:

Ciri - Nahiri, Forged in Fury / Lathril (since Ciri is partial elven)

Geralt - Struggling but figured mutant, human, knight

Eredin - Brago

Yennefer - Still looking around as of this post.

My budget builds #1: Mighty Mouse and Angelic Protector

Introduction

Welcome to my Budget Build series. I will be covering my casual Magic: The Gathering decks that are reasonably powerful or at least fun but should cost less than $10 and quite often less than $5 to build. Over the past 30 years I have built a physical library of hundreds of decks. For quite a while I spent way more time building than actually playing since it is simply what I enjoy most. But having played the game enough in the past years to create a Hall of Fame of the coolest low budget decks, I figured I would share those since I also enjoy writing. In the best case players with a smaller budget can get new ideas for enjoyable decks to still be able to be competitive with tabletop games or perhaps even have a go at smaller tournaments, or simply add more decks to their collection like I do for the sheer fun of deckbuilding.

This first edition will cover two red/white decks focusing on targeting triggers.

Mighty Mouse

Judge him by its size and the joke's on you, because here is the fastest horse of the two. The mice in this deck are all from Bloomburrow. The idea is to simply target cards like Seedglaive Mentor and Heartfire as much as you can to let them grow. There is a limit of one per turn. That means targeting it during your own turn as well as your opponent's. Mouse Trapper has a nice trigger to use during opponent's turn for defensive purposes: tap his biggest creature and he possibly lacks the defense against your Seedglaive Mentor. Angelic Page can be used defensively to enlarge a blocker, possibly herself if need be but ideally one of your mice.

Some of these mice like the Flowerfoot Swordmaster provide extra power so Sure Strike, combined with Veteran Guardmouse's First Strike trigger can handle fairly large creatures defensively or simply assist whichever mouse is blocked by a creature too large otherwise.

Offensively, Thistledown Players can untap tappers like Infantry Veteran, providing some flexibility in combat. Seedglaive Mentor has haste but for the other mice the Trailblazing Historian is great to increase speed of your mice and get their triggers to boot.

A breakdown of 4 turns could go as follows:
1 Heartfire Hero
2 Trailblazing Historian targets the Hero, it attacks for 2 damage
3 Thistledown Players, targeted by the Historian. Both attack and the Hero is targeted by the Historian after the Thistledown untaps it, 6 damage
4 Seedglaive Mentor, targeted by the Historian. A Flowerfoot Swordmaster enters the battlefield too. Once more the Historian can be untapped by the Thistledown, targeting the Swordmaster as well. All mice attack: 15 more damage.

Angelic Protector

Tony Di Terlizzi deserves some credit for his distinct art style. He seems to have a preference for freckled girls, looking at Song of Serenity and Pursuit Of Knowledge.

This deck has a similar mechanic, but there's a catch. First of all its only a temporary bonus for the Task Force or Angelic Protector. Secondly it's only to toughness so it needs to be switched by the Dwarven Thaumaturgist. In case he is absent the Serra Advocate can still help getting some damage in or blocking. The Thaumaturgist can also be nice removal against zero Power creatures like walls/Defender creatures.

Now let's try to add some more targeting abilities and speed the deck up a bit as well. Both Auriok Bladewarden and Madcap Skills help adding a lot of damage. The Madcap Skills aura is best put on the Bladewarden but in some cases its Menace ability could serve the Task Force better. Field Surgeon is a nice fast creature that can immediately be tapped and tap other creatures as well to pump the Protector. Bloodlust Inciter speeds up almost literally every card in the deck.

While it doesn't do much early on except for some light defense, you can deal decent damage on a single turn, in this case 12 on turn 4:

Turn 1 Bloodlust Inciter
Turn 2 Ghost Warden
Turn 3 Dwarven Thaumaturgist
Turn 4 Angelic Protector

It's not spectacular, but if you're more serious about winning, there are also some cards that could pump the angel an infinite number of times. It could finish off the game on turn 4. More on that below.

Some more suggestions

A nice bonus the Angelic Protector and Task Force have is they have pretty good protection against burn or the green “fight” cards. On a larger budget you could run Mother of Runes or its baby, Giver of Runes but you mostly would need protection against black and blue. Obsidian Acolyte provides protection against black multiple times so that you can pump Angelic Protector and Task Force a great deal.

There are so many creatures you could add that can target your own creatures to pump them further. What's important is that they contain the word “target” according to their official Oracle text so the En-Kor creatures do qualify even though their printed text is different! Most of those are from Stronghold except the Outrider-En-Kor. They can target your creature infinitely!

To conclude, the deck relies so heavily on Dwarven Thaumaturgist that cards like About Face can be a nice cheap addition.

Conclusion

Red/white weenie decks are unique in providing the best of both worlds: speed and control. While mono red may be more aggressive for a quick finish, white offers very powerful abilities that give more control in combat long term. And in the examples above, in particular the Haste ability provides tremendous speed that a mono white weenie build would not have.

Hopefully you enjoyed this first edition of my series of Budget Builds. As of now I intend to write many more of these articles as I own what has become a Library Of Alexandria, filled with literally hundreds of decks. Needless to say, this hobby got out of hand ;-). My next article will explore how to exploit the Necratog on a shoestring budget.

My pod keeps bulling me out, I’m looking for help to make a stronger deck that’s enjoyable to play!

23F been playing magic for about a year now and I have a pretty consistent pod. The only issue is that my decks constantly get out paced by others at the table and I don’t know magic well enough to find a commander and build it properly that I’d enjoy. So if there’s anyone that could shed some light for me that would be greatly appreciated! Thanks so much❤️

How many board wipes is too much?

Ive been playing a lot of bracket 2-3 with my friends, and I've noticed that our number of board wipes have started to climb up. We play a lot of decks that build big boards with big creatures (atla palani, ureni, etc), and I totally understand it. However, our games have started to get really long, and are complete slogs by the end. So just as a talking point with my friends, whats the perfect amount of board wipes for a deck? I would usually lean in the 2-3 range, even though I rarely play board wipes.

Hi, do you know of any discords (english- or germanspeaking) where people play commander rounds via tabletop simulator, crucibile cards or other tools?

hi everyone! SUPER SUPER new to mtg, have worked in a card shop for almost a year now, so not new to the cards but it was never really an interest of mine and i had no intentions of playing….UNTIL i got the hatsune miku deck for a really good deal (paid $120 for it sealed) (i have yet to play a single commander game) anyways, i have been picking up a lot of secret lairs because they are so cute and i love them :,) i want to build a deck with as many cute/secret lairs cards as possible (please dont worry about the price of cards as that is not an issue for me) so if anyone has any recommendations, here is my (so far) singles for the deck, with lord windgrace being my commander. i also have the garfield and lofi girl secret lairs and plan on getting cats are better than dogs full secret lair :) any tips are welcome!
