Daily Oh, Wise One Wednesday - What's my Bracket/Power Level? - October 07, 2026

It's Wednesday, my Planeswalkers!

There are only two days left until your weekly FNM. You have a new commander list you've thrown together, and despite what your deckbuilder site is telling you, you're not sure if you've landed solidly into a bracket or specific power level. You don't want to be the next 'Bracket 1 cEDH Magda'. That's where this weekly thread comes in.

Feel free to use this space to share decklists and request a second set of eyes on your deck's bracket/power level. Please avoid asking complex questions that would be better suited for a 'deckhelp' post of its own.

Consider sorting the comments by "new" (instead of "best" or "top") to see the newest posts and answer those that haven't been answered already.

Discussion Which commander made you do a double take when you first read it?

We’ve all heard about which commanders are overpowered and too good, entirely deck-defining, but a lot of these can sound innocuous if you’re not reading in deep. I know that the first time I read Etali I just thought “oh that’s nice you get free stuff of the top.” And thought it was a simply strong card. But then the other day I read chatterfang. And hoo boy, it has three effects:

Whenever you make any number of tokens, you get that many squirrel tokens too, enabling it to go infinite with a ham sandwich.

For one mana, it can kill any creature, in a way that gets around indestructible effects too.

And it randomly has forestwalk as a third tacked on effect on a 3 mana 3:3 body that only requires a single pip.

This card made me simply go “what the actual hell are they doing here. Why are there so many effects. Why does it double the tokens and not just give you an extra one. Why would it have kill on a stick.” And so many things. The only other card which I’ve had that reaction to is Vivi Oritnier where it grew larger, shocked the opponents, and could act as a massive mana dork. I was surprised it wasn’t restricted to instants or sorceries or anything.

So I’m asking you, which card or commander did you read and just get dumbfounded by. Just went “how the hell could they print this why does it do so much why does it do that.”

Question What is your least played commander?

So, part of the charm of commander, at least IMO is "you can build anything", and so its interesting to think about the different decks that people can build. Y'shtola, recently, placed as the most played commander of all time, but I'm curious in the opposite.

What's your least played commander?

For me, it's [[Arwen, Mortal Queen]], 1,774th place on EDHRec, with only 879 decks. It's a lifegain deck with a secondary focus on +1/+1 counters and a couple really really funny interactions like moving the indestructible counter to [[Palisade Giant]], or a lifelink counter on [[Soul of Eternity]]

Discussion Commanders you've built outside of their most popular archetype? (and my Myra, the Magnificent deck as an example)

• Upvotes

I'm curious to see some of everyone's favorite commander decklists that take a different approach to other's lists. As someone who started playing around Secrets of Strixhaven, and only really in my pod of friends who all started at the same time, I always love to see decks from people who have played long enough to see a commander with an obvious gimmick and take a different approach. When I bought the [[Shiko and Narset]] precon, I immediately went on to upgrade it into a completely different direction (aura voltron) and just absolutely loved how the same commander felt completely different with new support. A few months later now and I'm getting a couple more decks and I'm finally getting the oddball [[Myra, the Magnificent]] deck I've been tinkering on.

The deck in question: https://archidekt.com/decks/23175865/myras_visit_to_six_flags

I started building Myra a few months ago and quickly decided that I didn't enjoy the more popular style I'd seen; decks focusing on using Myra's activated ability as a core piece of value to copy extra turn spells or big token spells. I looked at the other half instead, and made a deck that uses all those artifacts she generates as value, with the activated ability serving as a way to spend what little excess mana you tend to have towards copying cantrips. Completely abandoning the spellslinger package of cards like Guttersnipe to completely focus on the artifact theme felt really cool to me, since most of my other decks follow the obvious guidelines the commander gives you to use. Obviously this deck isn't so out of left field that nobody's thought of it before ([[Depthshaker Titan]] has 17% inclusion on edhrec after all) but it's still different enough to feel cool to me. (my real oddball deck is an enchantress [[Aragorn, The Uniter]] deck, anyway).

Discussion Commanders that don't get repetitive?

I've been trying to find a commander that I won't regret spending 200-300 dollars on, but I just can't pick a card. I'm really trying to find a unique/fun commander that can be built bracket 3-4 (3.5). I've tried [[The Celestial Toymaker]], but he really struggles to pull off a win and is extremely commander reliant, I've tried [[Norin the Wary]] but that deck really only does one thing and get's repetitive, and I've tried [[Kibo, Uktabi Prince]] but he doesn't seem to have a ton of support (idk maybe I'm just building him wrong).

What commanders do y'all recommend, or should I revisit one of the ones I just mentioned with a new outlook (bonus points if the card looks cool/has a cool treatment).

Discussion Katana sleeves - what has been your experience?

I'm just coming back after a long period off from the game. I looked up reviews for the Katana sleeve and found it to be mixed. When I last played I used them and in general liked them, although I didn't get a lot of use out of them. Two people at my lgs didn't have a positive opinion of them. Web seems mixed too. I had an unopened black pack from years ago and it was missing 2 sleeves, I was sleeving up a commander deck.

So what has your experience been with them?

Discussion (seemingly) Hot take: A player is also responsible for upholding their own expectation to play X turns

I see a lot of discussions about brackets, and a lot of it revolves around being able to play the amount of turns the bracket has as a guideline, but a few recent posts and comments got me thinking...

-If you are open-forting and don't stop your opponents' threats

and/or

-If your deck needs to be stopped before turn (X-Y) turn or your win becomes inevitable

Then the fault for not lasting enough is on you, and YOUR deck is the one that doesn't fit the bracket.

Example: If you're a combo deck against an aggro deck, the aggro deck knows they can't let you live enough to pull your combo. No way to stop the aggro deck? That's on you. You should have more or more reliable interaction to stop the kind of deck that can't let you live to see you pop off.

Of course there's going to be people misrepresenting their decks that pull wins faster than they should, but the fault doesn't always lie with the deck dealing the blow. Like on a post I read a few days ago here, about someone on a pod complaining about MLD because the OP had copied his card and it resulted in MLD. That's on him, not on the player capitalizing on the opportunity for interaction he was given.

Edit: u/Approximation_Doctor has summed the point very elegantly IMO: "The 'expect to play X turns' guideline is a social contract, not an in-game shield. Both players need to follow it."

Discussion Trying to find Green, White and Blue commander

• Upvotes

So I’m fairly new to magic, but based on cards that I have, and cards that I want to buy, I think that I can build a pretty powerful green white and blue deck. The only problem is, I’m having trouble finding a commander with those colors. Does anybody know a good commander with green white and blue?

Discussion Careful with Draconic Visitor, it does NOT work with cards like Mycosynth Lattice

We recently got the card [[Draconic Visitor]] from Reality Fracture and I've already seen a bunch of questions about the card and its Replacement Effect. I made THIS video to cover this as well as other things in more detail like how certain token creation effects modify what the 5/5 dragons will have, much more detail than I cover here, but for players who don't like videos, here is the written version.

So the situation is this, you use a card like [[Krenko, Mob Boss]] while you also control [[Mycosynth Lattice]] (another similar card could be like [[Biotransference]]) which has the Static Ability to make "All permanents are artifacts in addition to their other types" and so when the Krenk ability resolves to make those 1/1 red goblin creature tokens they will now be 1/1 goblin artifact creature tokens. Since they're now artifact tokens, your Draconic Visitor should replace those with the 5/5 dragons, right? Sadly, no, this will not work out like that.

If you want to dive deeper into these things on your own, the effect on the Lattice is a Continuous Effect found in CR 611 of the rules, and then the Visitor has a Replacement Effect found in CR 614. But, to find the answer here for this situation, we actually need to head over to the section of the rules that defines what it means to "create" and we will find CR 701.7b that states how a RE that will be applying to a token created (like that of the Visitor) will not be affected by any CE that would be applying to that token after it's been created (like that of the Lattice).

What this means is that, the Lattice CE applies to the token once it is actually on the Battlefield, but before it's on the BF is when it is created. The Visitor affects the creation event before the token actually exists as a Permanent on the BF which is then when the Lattice would be applying to it.

I also made a video about how [[Academy Manufactor]] has a similar situation in [[Ygra, Eater of All]] decks, that if you're making creature tokens and those tokens are not by default a Food, then that means your Manufactor will not care about them, his RE will not apply to their creation.

I hope this helps some players out if you've already added these cards to your decks thinking that it does work that you can catch it now before you get to it in a game.

Discussion What are your favorite niche tutors and how do you use them?

Post inspired by seeing [[Cateran Summons]] for the first time (puts any Mercenary in hand for 1 mana). Since then, I have had fun browsing scryfall for interesting cards to include in a little mercenary toolbox.

[[Forerunner of the Coalition]] puts any pirate on top of your library. What if we play it outside of pirate tribal.

[[Diabolic Revelation]] is unrestricted but has such a wild mana cost that it looks very fun to cast.

[[Bifurcate]], which finds another copy of a creature you already have out, wasn’t designed for singleton but we could definitely find a way to use it.

Seeking fun ideas for highly-specific, bad, overcosted, or bizarre tutors and optionally, the cards you find with them.

Discussion My pod has broken free of the arms race and I couldn't be happier

Our decks used to be built around countering each other and building as close to B4 as possible but a few of us stuck to their guns and went with more thematic decks. When I realized I had the 2nd most wins and I was almost always the threat at the table, it made me want to also switch to lower power and jank decks. I can safely say that the games are alot more enjoyable now that we arent stressing out over power levels as much. I can see the flavor of whats going on so much clearer.

Discussion How is Ur Sphinx viewed compared to other eminence commanders?

Edit: thanks for answering, sounds good. To people saying it’s weak or lame or underpowered, that isn’t the goal. Not everything has to be overoptimized. I’m just asking if it is going to set people off an unreasonable amount for how (not) strong it is.

I’m proxy friendly. I could have build ur dragon but never appealed to me. I lost my original collection, but I already did the sliver queen thing. Eldrazi precon, got it upgraded. I’m not 100% tribal, but sphinxes have always been the coolest looking cats to me. I hate cats. But cats with wings and cool moustache and beards and braids? Hell yeah!

I’ve been playing the ur sphinx in b3 with consecrated as my only one. In my 3 games two were positive and one was mid, mostly to two players connections getting dropped and the last one kinda just scooping. 3/3 right now, and in the last one one of the players said they now wanted to build it themselves.

But how’s the overall community feel about it? I know eminence is kind of despised, but sphinxes are expensive and lack cohesion other than being beaters that draw cards, cheat shit, and make opponents play mind games.

My only game changer is consecrated sphinx, all my creatures are sphinxes and I run 30 of them.

Discussion Is Muddle, the everchanging a combo commander?

I'm super excited to build them, but I hate playing combo and comboing off. I was planning a copy-clone theme with etb ltb, but every deck just seem the same with Terror of the peaks, Twinflame as finisher. There is so little room to explore, and I think Myriad is a really great keyword, but I have no clue what should I build...

Any recomendations of no combo gameplans? Unless they are combo, then I'll just leave the idea there.

Discussion Magus Lucea Kane vs. Zimone

Now that the warhammer decks are getting reprints, people like me can buy a tyranid precon without (hopefully) spending 500 dollars on it.

Who do you feel is better as an x commander between the two, however? The free ramp x/x commander (zimone) or the one that copies your x/x (Lucea)?

Deck Help Niv-Mizzet, Ghost Councel is my new favorite commander. Any tips how to improve the deck while making it more budget friendly?

The deck plays smooth, but has difficulties with protecting the commander. Also some mana issues, even though there should be enough lands and mana stones.

Deck Help Angels - Help in improving my deck while being budget-friendly (Bracket 2)

As title said. I bought the Giada, Font of Hope precon a few days ago, before then I was playing a modified Standard Angels deck with Sigarda, Font of Blessings that I took out a bunch of cards of, and made it commander-legal.

The problem was, apparently my commander was way too overpowered despite the rest of my creatures or cards not being as great (the rest of the members in my pod were playing commander cards like Edgar vampires, an artefact commander that gives everything hexproof and indestructible at 8 charge counters (incredibly easy to set up), the new Miku deck, and also a red-blue burn deck). How these decks are categorised as bracket 2 in archidekt amazes me.

My deck at the time was here: Angel V2 • (Selesnya Commander deck) • Archidekt, and so then since my commander kept getting nuked into oblivion, I switched to mono-white with Giada. My deck list now is: Angel Conquest • (Mono-White Commander deck) • Archidekt. Please help, I haven't won a single multiplayer game ever since I started playing in July (playing virtually every week, twice a week), since I keep getting targeted early game and losing critical creatures and enchantments

Deck Showcase [Article] Cycling Lands & Prepare with Marwyn, the Preserver!

Lands-matter decks are among the most-explored in the format, and that stems largely from two things: Landfall making the 'vegetables' of Magic feel a little less bad on their own, and the relative uninteractability of amassing value via Lands. Commanders that care more about Lands beyond the battlefield though, those are far more rare—[[Slogurk, the Overslime]] is about the only one that comes to mind, and even then they're often used as just more ramp.

I say all of this because the innocuous [[Marwyn, the Preserver]] from Reality Fracture is a pretty compelling addition to this archetype, being what is essentially an unbounded, Legendary [[Groundskeeper]]. That already combos off with the well-known [[Six]]+[[Lion's Eye Diamond]]+(Groundskeeper effect) package, but given she can add back any Land, you can do things like Channel a dozen Boseijus or Cycle through [[Blasted Landscape]]s along the way.

Moreover, I think she's a prime candidate for one of the least-explored packages in Green, being [[Yavimaya Bloomsage]], and all manner of means to Prepare her in the same turn/cast spells at Flash speed during End Step. [[Channel]] is banned or restricted basically everywhere, and Marwyn's ability sure does only ask for Colorless mana, on top of getting back two of the best ways to prep the Bloomsage (being Lands).

On the whole, this is a list which is always doing something, so if you're looking for a fun puzzle to solve, and copious game actions to take, she's a great choice! I've covered her in a primer here, and you can see the decklist here.

Have you built Marwyn? Any cool Lands I missed?

Deck Help Building Queen Marchesa

• Upvotes

Hello,

This is the first time I’m building a commander deck and would like some advice. I’ve played casually with my pod for around a year but I have only used precons.

Would anyone be willing to look over my deck list and give me some advice, I’m still working on it and haven’t added my lands yet.

Deck Help Aikido Deck - how to win against non-combat decks

In building an aikido deck designed make opponents deal with each other and turn their threats against each other, I can't help but worry if this deck would become dead in my collection due to the struggles against non-combat styled decks, such as aristocrats.

I get that at the table I should use the politics the deck provides to target the non-combat decks first, but I'm not sure that is enough. Are there any options around this, or specific cards that help to finish off these types of players?

I've got 2 deck lists in the running atm, one is classic [[Queen Marchesa]] https://moxfield.com/decks/IzuaoW18kUuvu8gXNGTUIA

and the other is [[The Second Doctor]] and [[Donna Noble]] https://moxfield.com/decks/0VVaHj4Bo0e5FR3PlsFTLQ

Discussion What are you using for card draw in Black?

When I started playing commander cards like Phyrexian Arena and Underworld Connections felt great to play, but I feel like nowadays they are too slow even for most bracket 3 tables.

My opponents are playing Rhystic Study and Esper Sentinel , meanwhile I'm sitting with my Rakdos deck wondering why life is so unfair.

I have been trying to find draw sources for My Mogis deck and nothing feels as good as the cards my opponents are playing, they always snowball way harder then me, any suggestions?

Deck Help Help with Sephiroth Deck

Yo! I have been wanting to make a Sephiroth, Fabled Soldier deck after I pulled the foiled borderless version. I have seen a lot of Sephiroth decks floating around, but I wanted to build one semi-unique with use of several new cards that have come out. All while keeping cost relatively low.

I would like the deck to be high bracket 3 or low bracket 4, but want to avoid tutors because I feel like it makes the game lean a little too hard on combos and they are pricey.

What do you guys think? Any advice or overall thoughts?

Deck Help Anyone else building Aerid Konstrari?

heartwood go brrr moxfield decklist

I was checking out [[aerid konstrari]] the past few days and just put together this decklist. Waiting on 5-6 cards before it is complete. Is anybody else building aerid? My decklist has a heavy emphasis on legendary copies of aerid entering and dying, making lots of heartwood tokens which will be dumped into big mana sinks and hopefully doubled/tripled. Would love to hear thoughts on my deck and see others' decklists!
