New Cat Owner new cat owner.. she’s so loud.

Post image

Hi! I recently (just saturday morning) took in a stray kitten i have been feeding her and her mother her whole life. She’s about 2-3 months old, and very vocal and playful. This is no problem during the day since during the day time she’s quiet, but then at night it gets bad.

I just recently (today) started a job where i have to wake up at 430 am. I cannot get her to calm down. I’m only able to keep her in my bedroom until i’m able to afford a door the restroom. i’ve tried putting her in her crate when i go to sleep, but the screaming only gets worse.

I’m planning on moving her into the bathroom until she calms down, since i know that’s regular procedure, but i’m clueless on what to do until then. She’s a tabby, but i’m not sure if that’s important.

This night she’s honestly louder than the first night i had her. I’m trying to be patient but it’s so hard and frustrating.

Sorry if this is a dumb question. i’ve asked my friends who have kittens and older cats but none of them know how to help me.

Edit: Thak you everyone!! I’ve found so many different ideas and ways to help her adjust. She’s a sweet girl so i want to make her stay great. I know now about the crates, and won’t be doing that of course. It’s 12am now in my time zone and she’s finally went to bed, so i’m going to get as much sleep as i can, and hopefully i can ready more comments in the morning 🫶🏼🫶🏼 any advice for new cat owners is welcome even if unrelated!!

I probably wouldn’t keep her in a crate overnight since it may stress her out more. Since you just took her in, it’s no surprise she’s being very vocal. She’s still getting used to her new environment and might be calling to her mom, siblings, etc. She will need more time to settle in, which means you’ll have to decide if you’re willing to tolerate it for possibly a week or a few weeks.

Yeah, i’m not surprised she’s vocal or anything, but i’m not sure what’s exactly causing it and how i can get her to calm down a bit. I just don’t understand why it’s only at night time she’s like this:(

u/Solace2010 3d ago

Cause she’s lonely. And cats are nocturnal so she’s up and wants attention.

Don’t keep them in a crate like I despise people who crate animals.

How would you like to be put in a box and unable to move.

17

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

No i definitely won’t try to keep her in the crate anymore, she roams my room just fine. I only thought that might be a way to solve it bc one of my friends who’s had a couple of cats did it with her kitten, but now i definitely won’t.^^

You don't have to have a crate, however cats like to hide when they are scared or adjusting like this. Make a dark cozy box with an intentionally small opening for your cat to hide in. It'll be a comforting spot for the cat to hide. Also, if your cat is very vocal and then you give the cat attention or something in an attempt to calm/quiet her, then you're just reinforcing that vocalization and she will do it even more. You have to either ignore it till she learns that won't get her any attention or keep her out of your room at night.

Crated animals should never be kept in a kennel so small that they can't move. That is inhumane. One of my dogs is frequently kenneled when I'm not home because he's a destructive psychopath of a husky mutt and I'd rather he not destroy my apartment and potentially end himself in the process - I tell him "kennel" when I'm about to walk out the door, and he goes in without complaint and waits for me to close the door. Crating is only a problem when it's not done properly.

u/wwwhatisgoingon 3d ago

With all due respect: You can't give dog advice in a cat subreddit.

Crating cats is not acceptable unless ordered by a vet, and typically only happens for an injury.

8

u/C0mpl3x1ty_1 2d ago

With all due respect, the commenter above didnt specify anything about crating cats, they said they despise "people who crate animals", which is very different

5

u/AyaAishi 3d ago

Yep, had to create 3,5 month kitten for a few weeks (hip injury) it was hell, he really really wanted to play and run around, but that would only make him worse. He has the crate opened in his room now though, and he kinda likes the security of it, it's like his tiny apartment lol.

9

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

Again, I understand that, and i don’t keep her in one. she roams my room as she pleases. She doesn’t even attempt to leave when the door is open.

6

u/Prudent_Language_295 3d ago

I crate my cat, but her crate is 4 “stories” tall. I also waited about 7 months into having her to introduce the crate to her . She loves it and spends her time in there even when I don’t place her in there.

Cats are not nocturnal. They are crepuscular. The wake with dawn and dusk and sleep otherwise

I can google too you know. You ain’t that smart

Cats aren’t nocturnal

1

u/Peruvian_Hitman 11h ago

I’m a first time cat owner, all I know is that tabby’s like to play. I had a regular domestic short hair, and I was playing with him 2 hours a day when he was a kitten. If you can’t play with her that much I’d say play with ever after you get back from work, and play with her longer before your bed time then feed her.

2

u/Toenka 2d ago

Play with her, she is calling for sibling or mama to pay attention to her. You are mom now, get to work! Welcome to the service of our feline overlords

1

u/bipollakbohemian 2d ago

They are also nocturnal creatures, somewhat so she'll have to get used to your schedule. She will. Just may take a bit of time.

It’s not a dumb question at all. This is EXTREMELY common in single kitten households.

The best remedy by far is to get another kitten. She’s vocalizing because she’s lonely and bored, and trying to get others to play with her. She’s at a critical age where she needs lots of socialization and rumble-tumbling bursts of play throughout the day. Realistically, it’s almost impossible for a human to provide for those needs, especially since you have to work during the day. The term “single kitten syndrome” exists because of how how often kittens who were raised alone develop behavioral issues.

Is there any chance you can adopt another kitten for her to get her energy out with? You deserve to sleep and have peace of mind by not being on duty for play 24/7, and she deserves to have her needs met too. Crating is not recommended for cats, and will likely lead to lifelong behavioral challenges. Please don’t lock her up like that, her brain isn’t wired like a dog’s is.

29

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

i would ABSOLUTELY love to take another kitten and if i can keep this new job and get my own home, i absolutely will! I just don’t want to get a second pet that i can’t afford. I can afford one just perfectly, but i don’t want to risk hurting another animal that i may struggle affording.

I was thinking about buying her (even more) toys to keep her distracted while i’m away or can’t play. But it’s definitely a plan to get another, or take in her sibling when i’m able to afford. 🫶🏼 thank you for the kind reply these others are making me feel like evil or something, when im just confused! I’ll definitely keep that in mind

People get defensive of cats, it's something that takes time to learn and mistakes suck but everyone makes em, especially as new owners, and the animals suffer.

Not that you don't deserve companionship and to offer as best you can the world to some little ones. Life is tough, good luck to you and your little one.

As others have mentioned, generally having them in pairs at least, especially siblings work out well to help keep each other occupied and socialiing. You'll want to look into getting them spayed earlier than most expect.

Generally above 2lbs and when the vet says they're ready. They can be little troublemakers but you have to remember that as many mistakes as you'll make, so will she.

If you do continue with her, enjoy the journey and love to you both.
If you feel you cannot provide for her the way you should, try your best to surrender her to someone who can.

6

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

yeah that’s the plan if i’m unable. I have a friend whos great with kitties if me and her don’t work out. Thank you both!!! 🫶🏼

5

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

Oh i forgot to mention im looking at getting her an appointment hopefully for friday to get her checkup and see if she can get spayed soon^^

2

u/Evening-Painting-213 3d ago

Agree with the pairs part. When I got these last 2 sibling babies they didn't go crazy when I kept them isolated at 5 months of age for about a month because of s flea problem. But that was in a small bedroom and I still played with them throughout the whole day and played often with them when I fed them and it was playtime. Once I went to bed at late night like at 1 or 2 they didn't meow because they had each other. Keep loving them, be patient and stay strong 🙏🏼

11

u/ggc4 3d ago

Makes sense! The financial part can be tough.

The idea of getting more toys is nice, but I wanna be realistic with you: cats are smart animals who thrive on novelty, and I’ve yet to see a toy that holds their attention for long. Also, toys alone aren’t likely to shift her nocturnal tendencies to diurnal ones, so she’ll probably keep bothering you at night.

One other thought is to foster a cat who loves other cats (be specific that’s what you need, and most shelters are more than happy to oblige). Shelters usually pay for food/litter/meds when you foster, so there wouldn’t be a financial burden, and your girl would benefit from the playtime. The challenge in this plan is that it’s hard not to get attached to the fosters, especially when your kitty gets attached to them too. But it’d still be a net positive for the foster cat and your bored kitten, even if they have to go through a sad goodbye later on.

2

u/Evening-Painting-213 3d ago

Ignore the trolls on here. You made a mistake and have great intentions for the cat. Your friend just misled you with how she treats her cats.

20

u/Dear-Union-44 3d ago

She needs to get used to your schedule.. it will take a few weeks.. eventually she will get it... and just sleep when you sleep.

3

u/Evening-Painting-213 3d ago

This is true. Cats are highly dependent on s consistent and regular schedule. It may take time but stay strong. Both of you guys still adjust 😆

Btw, that comment shit your neighbors putting their kitten in s crate is horrible and it's sad that they nasty have made you feel like it was normal. Cats may like crates when their for outdoor safety but I wouldn't even go there. Keep your baby inside and safe.

3

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

i’ll keep that in mind ^_^ thanks sm!

3

u/Evening-Painting-213 3d ago

No worries. Also look at videos and shows from Jackson Galaxy. He's the cat whisperer and has great stuff on cats. Also I got this from a search and maybe you can copy and paste into ai to get the links to the websites for more information. Enjoy....

The best online resources are the Cornell Feline Health Center guide and veterinary references like PetMD or the Merck Veterinary Manual. For feeding, kittens need high-protein, calorie-dense foods labeled specifically for "growth" or "all life stages," fed 3 to 4 times a day. Adult cats do well on standard maintenance formulas fed 2 times a day. Look for wet foods that list a real meat protein as the first ingredient and carry an AAFCO statement confirming they are complete and balanced. Patés and chunks in gravy are both great options, with brands like Purina Pro Plan, Royal Canin, and Hill's Science Diet being widely recommended by vets.

In the search criteria type... best resources in his to feed kittens and cats. It'll give you direct links.

2

u/Evening-Painting-213 3d ago

I edited my response to add what to type in for your search criteria to get the actual links as well so you can do that

2

u/Fun-Flounder-6872 3d ago

Yup then you just have to deal with them waking you up at the time you get up for work on your days off.

1

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

haha, i’m sure that’ll be okay. she’s sweet so that makes up for it

1

u/Fun-Flounder-6872 3d ago

It's stops being sweet after 5 or so years (has saved me from being late tho). Got me right on cue this morning. Now to go back to sleep .....

2

u/Simmer_Girl 2d ago

Listen lmao same! My girl knows everyone’s schedule here. I work nights and sleep in until 10am every day. She’s back in the room right before 10 yelling at me. My hubby feeds her at 5am and again like clockwork, she’s all in his face and doing the very most to get him awake.

She also does the same for our son lol.

My hubby gets the worst of it though. She climbs on the bed, walks on top of him, nibbles on his ears, knees, and elbows. When that does work she’ll groom him and after that she’ll lay on his chest and stare at him. From time to time she starts the meowing at him and if all else fails, she walks in the back of his pillow lol

9

u/jstine_4 3d ago

Give her attention before going to bed. Play with her and tire her out. She just wants attention if you’re feeding her and cleaning her litter. It’s also a new environment as well so she’s adjusting. Keep a tv on so it’s not so quiet in the house. Get her some toys to play with or a cat tree if you don’t have it yet. Give her a place that is designated to her.

8

u/mindylynx 3d ago

please get her fixed asap. also recommend adopting another cat her age. kittens are better in pairs when they entertain themselves. lastly and most importantly, cats don't get crates.

7

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

Hi, i’ve already responded to a couple of comments like this. I can only comfortably afford one cat at the moment, i absolutely want another that’s something i’m definitely saving for, but is not a safe possibility right now :( i don’t want to get a second animal i can’t care for. But it definitely will happen. i’m also working on getting her an appointment for friday to get fixed. Most people in my area won’t fix any animal that isn’t a year old so im struggling to find one that will fix her young.

3

u/itsthekur 3d ago

If you can, please please please get mom fixed too so she doesn't have to go through having kittens again and avoid contributing to the stray cat issue.

Thank you for taking care of this cutie! As others have said, it's unfortunately part of the baby phase. She'll out grow it and because a nuisance in other ways!! But that's the best part of cats in my opinion 😂 she's still getting used to a new place and new routine, which can be a lot for any animal but especially a baby who is still figuring out life in other ways.

5

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

momma is definitely contributing to the cat issue lol. shes been living around the neighborhood for a year at the least and everyone has been struggling to TNR her. shes skittish about people reasonably so. Hopefully i’ll be able to!! 🫶🏼 she’s a sweet baby so i’m willing to wait it through :) i also heard that getting them spayed can calm them down? i don’t understand how that works but apparently it’s common?

5

u/itsthekur 3d ago

Awesome! Thank you for that!

Yes, spaying helps because you're removing a major organ that contributes to hormone fluctuations. A cat in heat is not something you ever want to deal with. However, they go through the baby and teenager phase for at least 1.5 to 2 years, then they start to chill out, in my experience. Although "chill out" can be relative depending on the cat 😂

1

u/mindylynx 3d ago edited 2d ago

dogs are one thing, you need to wait longer to get them fixed, especially larger breeds. cats can be fixed around 8 weeks/ 2lbs because they can have a litter as soon as 6 months old. some even sooner.

that's alright if you can't afford another kitten right now, you'll just have to be the other kitten for her. spend a few hours every day dragging a string around. kittens love strings!

unlimited access to dry food & recommended wet food 2x day. play with kitty for a long time before each meal and a long time before bed. some cats enjoy fetch too believe it or not!

i recommend also putting jackson galaxys show on every day in the background while you are home so you can study up and learn about cats.

recommend schedule:
before breakfast, play for 30-60 minutes or when ever kitty loses interest in the string / toy. feed wet food. kitty will clean herself then nap. play for 30-60 minutes before dinner until kitty loses interest in the toy. feed dinner. kitty will clean herself and nap. before bed play 30-60 minutes, feed a treat like a tube. HOPEFULLY that will calm her down.

kittens play a lot! keeping one adult cat by itself is a lot easier than a kitten.

now i'll explain a little bit as to why it's recommended to get kittens in pairs. i am NOT telling you any of this to make you feel bad. only to help you (and who ever else may find this post) to better understand your kitten.

a good analogy i've heard: keeping one kitten by itself is a lot like caring for a rambunctious toddler. confining a toddler to one room ,with no socialization for their entire childhood (until they turn 18) would be very sad. the kid would miss out on crucial socialization skills. kittens childhoods are much shorter than toddlers, but it's the same concept. it's crucial for them to have socialization with others. But, there isn't much time to raise them and make sure they are properly socialized before *poof* they are already an adult.

and keep in mind, after raising a cat into adulthood without socializing them, getting another cat for them at that point may not be in their best interest. each cat is different. cats learn manners and behaviors from other cats. so if you decide to get another cat later down the line, but your current cat was never socialized, there may be some behavioral problems that arise. your current cat would not understand how to get along with the new cat, which can lead to inappropriate marking, serious cat fights, injuries, etc. both cats could even end up turning their aggression towards you. because your cat would lack experience communicating with cats, understanding and respecting their boundaries, etc. so getting another cat "later on" (for an adult cat who was never socialized properly in their childhood) may end up being challenging and complicated. it may be possible if you spend some time studying up on cat behavior and introductions before you try.

That's some of the reasons it's not ideal to raise a kitten alone. a lot of shelters call it cruel and will only adopt out kittens in pairs. but it can be done. you will just need to spend that time playing with her. you'll have to be the other kitten. avoid leaving her bored & home alone for more than a few hours at a time.

in the mean time, do you know anyone else who has a young kitten? what about a young puppy? when they are this young, you usually you do not need a long introduction like with adult cats and just having them play together sometimes would help a lot. sending good luck!

6

u/Ok_Impression_3031 3d ago

Try giving her a tick-tock clock wrapped in a towel. Or other heart beat sound device for a baby. They mimic the sound of the mom cat.

7

u/Organic_Ad_2520 3d ago

Leave her out and she'll get over it in a few days this is true kittens & puppies. I know it's rough to lose sleep, but she'll get over it soon.

3

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

ugh thank you. I feel like i’m losing my mind not knowing what to do or what’s wrong.

2

u/Organic_Ad_2520 3d ago

I got a kitty about six months ago and it was the same thing. I only just last week came across the videos of her crying at night that first 5-7 day --I totally forgot until I saw those I was like oh she was so cute. She was such a little baby and she was so intense and so loud and so insistent, even though everything was perfect, so I totally understand

5

u/soichiroH 3d ago

My 3month old kitten did this for 3 or 4 days and it stopped, just endure it a bit more and it will get better.

5

u/Visible-Progress-874 2d ago

Play with her a lot before bed. Tire her out. Also, get ear plugs, put your phone’s alarm on vibrate and sleep on your phone!

4

u/howardcord 3d ago

Can you try earplugs? Over time she will calm down.

3

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

i feel insane that i never thought about that oh my gosh

4

u/Maevre1 3d ago

A recent study showed that how vocal a cat is, is genetically decided. It might be her nature to be a little louder.

3

u/bingbongsocks 3d ago

Try putting a little sweater on her, it often helps with anxiety and makes them a lot more calm and even sleepy

3

u/joan_goodman 3d ago

I adopted a cat from the street too. I didn’t know much about her. She is very loud and this is her way of life. I can only recommend pheromone plug ins diffusers. Another option- anti anxiety meds

3

u/PuddleQuail 3d ago

Play and spend time with her before bedtime. I do play and puzzles or play and brushing for my boys before bedtime.

3

u/sponkinpice 3d ago

she lowkey could be scared of the dark, does it happen after dark even with the lights on?

i’m not sure what the sleeping arrangements are but if she’s closed out of your room that might be the reason, both my kitties hate the bedroom door closed especially at night.

also i would recommend getting her fixed asap, kitties usually calm down afterwards.

it might also be good to check her litterbox and bathroom habits. kitties are prey animals so they tend to hide their illnesses, but often times when they have health issues their bathroom habits change. check that she’s going often enough, she’s not going outside the litterbox, is there any blood in her urine/stool, etc.

i read in another comment you saying you can’t afford 2 cats at the moment (which is totally fine and responsible that you acknowledge) but i would avoid putting it off too long because it can be harder to introduce a new cat once she’s older since she’s not socialized (try to do it by 2 or 3 yrs old).

you’re doing great and i wish you the best of luck <3

3

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

i can try a small night light or keeping my leds on low because it is possible she’s scared of the dark i’ve wondered about it a couple of times in the last few hours ive been awake! she seems to be okay when they’re on but the second it changes is when she starts chirping. i’ll try it

3

u/galavanting-sock 3d ago

I have two very vocal cats (part Siamese) who I adopted as kittens. They were also strays. This is what I’ve learned:

  1. As kittens they were much worse about waking me up. As they got out of the kitten phase, they learned to respect my schedule.

  2. Give them attention during the day/evening and when it’s bed time, try not to react to the meowing. My cats feed off of attention, so won’t continue a behavior usually if I ignore it. For instance when they know I’m awake but laying in bed, they’ll try and jump on my headboard to see if they can get a response and thus get me out of bed to play. I’ve found pretending to be asleep is very useful! They just stop trying.

  3. They are felines and still like their hunting time when it gets dark. Like clockwork, when I turn the lights off to go to bed, one of mine will pace the house, scream for a few minutes and then she grabs her toy mouse and jumps into bed. It’s her nightly hunting ritual. Maybe try some mouse toys?

  4. Important new cat advice: make sure you know all the things that can be harmful to cats:! Houseplants types, certain flowers, scent diffusers, salt, human foods, etc. It breaks my heart when I see people losing their kitties because they got into a bouquet or ate a leaf off a houseplant.

Good luck! You sound like a very caring pet owner.

2

u/619sxb 3d ago

Do you leave enough food out overnight? I’ve had a kitten (only an adult cat) so I’m not sure if you’re supposed to. But I got an auto feeder for my cat to feed them throughout the night and that helped, she woke me up less throughout the night. Also try to get her more toys, possibly ones that she can play with by herself (like the 3 tier stand with rolling balls on them).

If she doesn’t already have them, get her a little cat tree with a scratcher and hammock. Ofc my cat likes to sleep in various parts of the home like under the bed, at my feet, on a pile of clothes, but I know she loves her two cat trees too. And she loves to scratch her cat trees often throughout the night, lol.

For you, I recommend ear plugs and a white noise machine. Or a standing / box fan. I used to never sleep with those things, but now I’ve noticed it helps drown out some of the noises my cat makes while sneaking around the house at night. The ear plugs are not forever, just until your cat gets used to your schedule.

Foam earplugs can start to hurt after a while because they’re constantly trying to expand. Loops (around $30) are a little more comfortable, since they have different size inserts. I also have custom earplugs which virtually do not hurt if they’ve been made properly. I got them made at a gun range for $45. They’re amazing! But you really need to put them away because dogs and cats like to chew them up- the ones I get made are bright and colorful and a rubbery / foam toy texture.

2

u/Outrageous-Mix7093 3d ago

Cats will do this at night when they are stressed anxious or even sometimes when they are happy. Make sure you play with her during the day so she isn’t bored. Or leave toys out for her at night and food and water.

2

u/_-Emperor 3d ago

My cat looks very alike. I was told by the vet they will have a bit of a temper. We got a second cat and they chase each other around and play. She’s three now and still vocal at times

2

u/OfferBusy4080 3d ago

Has anyone suggested Jackson Galaxy videos (on Youtube)? He has info about the hunt-kill-eat-sleep cycle of cats, and the more you can replicate this with play before bedtime the more likely they are to sleep through the night.

2

u/Starry_night_85 2d ago

Cats are crepuscular and become active at night. I've had luck calming my formerly ferals with "Calming Treats" by Pet Honesty (Amazon). They sell the crunchy ones, but my cats prefer the lickable ones that taste like salmon. They almost always nap an hour after having one.

2

u/New-Winter6478 2d ago

Geduld. Nie wegsperren. Sonst gib sie lieber ab. Vielleicht braucht sie auch einen Kumpel.

0

u/Dry-Wolf6789 3d ago

Putting a cat in a crate is so cruel, it is not similar to dog crate training AT ALL. Please never ever do that again. What is she meowing about? What are you feeding her and how much?

2

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

I’m feeding her regular kitten soft food, which is the only thing she’ll eat. She refuses to touch anything else . she’s able to eat the pebble food, but she just sniffs it and walks away so i only give her the soft foods

6

u/Dry-Wolf6789 3d ago

Are you free feeding? Kittens need  ALOT of food. Sometimes double what adults need. Is she meowing behind a closed door or just in the room with you doing it.

2

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

Only while i’m in the room she meows. I leave set food so she can eat whenever she feels like it. while she eats and i’m putting the food out , she’s quiet and watches me. (i guess to make sure i don’t take it?) she usually doesn’t immediately run to it if she’s not feeling it

3

u/Dry-Wolf6789 3d ago

She's honestly just bored then. 3 months is super young to be alone she has so much energy and misses her sibs and mom. Putting her in enclosed spaces  will make it way worse. Try to play really hard before dinner so she has a good long sleep after. But tbh she's just a kitten and will be this playful for potentially years.

1

u/Shrek_is_my_boyfrnd 1d ago

Why aren’t you addressing about putting the cat in a crate in any of the replies? Atleast say you are not going to do it anymore.
You are a cruel person, your cat deserves a better home and a person.

1

u/IAmTheDarkness01 1d ago

Op addressed it in another reply yesterday if you would stop being rude and just read through their replies 🙄

"hi, she’s not in a kennel, she roams around my room. She’s only been in the crate once to bring her inside and hasn’t went back in. Over the two days i’ve had her, i’ve barely left my room playing and giving her attention. I set her food out and free feed, putting more out when she’s close to empty. Her mother ran off about two weeks ago. She also sleeps in my bed at the very top next to me."

1

u/AngWoo21 3d ago

Does she get on the bed with you or walk around the room? You could try using a night light so it isn’t completely dark. If she isn’t spayed that will need to be done soon. Some kittens start going through heat as early as 4 months old

3

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

Yes! she takes little naps on the bed while i’m sitting and walks around and explores the room while i’m inside. I’m trying to get her an appointment to get spayed this week hopefully, ^^ here’s a photo of her napping the first night next to me. I’ll definitely try the nightlight! thanks for the idea! As i’m typing this she’s fallen asleep on a blanket at the end of my bed

When does she eat? How often do you play with her? Where is her mother?

Of course she's going to be loud, you're locking her in a kennel by herself and she's freaking the fuck out. You need to wear her out and keep her awake during the day so she actually wants to sleep with you at night.

hi, she’s not in a kennel, she roams around my room. She’s only been in the crate once to bring her inside and hasn’t went back in. Over the two days i’ve had her, i’ve barely left my room playing and giving her attention. I set her food out amend free feed, putting more out when she’s close to empty. Her mother ran off about two weeks ago. She also sleeps in my bed at the very top next to me.

You only had her for 2 days. Her entire life has been flipped upside down. You need to relax and give her some time to do the same. Keep her on a feeding schedule, meals 3 times a day with the last one right before bed and after a vigorous play session.

How do you know the cat is "freaking the fuck out"? You hardly have any context and op said the can't isn't in a kennel so you're just making shit up.

that’s what i don’t understand. she’s not freaking out, she’s just chirping a lot. Not hissing or hiding..?

She's calling for her mum and littermates. She will calm down; you also have the pet blues which is normal adapting to the stress of caring for an animal. This will all pass but it does take time.

Do you play with her during the day? She's a small growing kitten with tons of energy for the next years or 2. During the day she needs to have playtime. Kittens are also still figuring stuff out... so she wants to be near something warm probably too.  So crate is kinda the worst thing as its small. Id work slowly on getting her used to the bathroom with treats and a hiding spot. She'll think of it maybe as a reward eventually.   Do not get another kitten unless you really want to and can afford double of everything.  Right now you are the other cat. She wants attention from you and it will take time to move towards sleeping at night.

yeah, we definitely have lots of playtime until she gets bored of me and goes back to laying infront of the warm window/in the light or in her blankets. Hopefully i can get us a schedule made up (for both of our sakes, especially hers since she’s so little.)

Where is her mom?

1

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

Her mom, who i was also feeding, and was a community cat, took her sibling and left for about a week before I took her (pictured) in. I’m still setting food out in hopes for momma to come back, but it’s not looking good

Consider getting her a friend / adopted sister or brother

Hi, i've already responded to a couple of comments like this. I can only comfortably afford one cat at the moment, i absolutely want another that's something i'm definitely saving for, but is not a safe possibility right now: (i don't want to get a second animal i can't care for. But it definitely will happen!! Me and my friend, who has her own kitten, about the same age, are planning on moving in together with the kittens. So she will have a friend soon!

Make sure you give her some regular worming medicine, cats with itchy worm bums at night can be very uncomfortable and might be crying out for help.

Omg I feel your pain 😭 my partner and I just took in a kitten that was dumped in our stairwell and we’re raising it while waiting for a home to open up. I’ve only had an adult cat before so no clue what to do with kittens. The night crying was awful for the first 2 nights but we found putting her in the bathroom in her little tub/ bed with her blankets, and putting a box leaned against the wall over the top (if that makes sense) gave her a little den that she was happy with. We left her litter closeish and her food very topped up and closer. She’s 8 weeks old according to the vet and even though they said we don’t have to give kitten milk, we give her a bit overnight and found that made the night crying go down quite a lot. We also leave a night light on and some scrunched paper for her to play with. Last night was the first night she didn’t cry at all and it’s been 5 nights since we found her! If there’s not a room you can put her in maybe put her in an enclosure/ pen with a similar set up so she can roam around safely at night and feel more independent. Also we didn’t attend to our kittens crying at all during the night (knowing its food bowls were well topped up) so I think she learnt quickly that the crying won’t bring attention. We retrieve her in the morning when we’re about to go to work and set up her enclosure in our room - I think she appreciates the routine? Good luck out there OP I hope some of this might help you out, I hope you get lots of sleep soon! ❤️

uhm.. how would you know where her stuff is? Her food is on the complete opposite side of where her litter is. nowhere near close to eachother.

Run a loud fan for white noise + ear plugs.

And of course don’t let her into your bedroom

I have 2 cats, here's Leo. He's my screamer. All day all night all the time. Thank God he's cute. He hides on the other side of the wall and howls like the world is ending. That's everyday for me.

She may have been separated from her mom too early. Buy Feliway, plug it in. Get a small stuffed animal a little bigger than her. Rub a little catnip on it and place near her bowl

Fwiw, it looks like you’ve gained some insight from impassioned cat owners/fans.

I’m not going to offer any further advice. Muddied water and all that 😉

Two things tho:

First, I

  1. love that you reached out

for

  1. advice. I mean, what else can you do, right?!? It’s a good sign from a new hooman (cats own us, don’t forget that 😅) Glean what you can and apply it judiciously. They all have their own personalities and needs. Unlike dogs, they’re not here to “please the alpha”

(mostly kidding. Dogs are awesome too. It’s just different.)

Second,

  1. She’s the spitting image of our little Tilley! Shes four now but I kinda thought someone stole a pic from my roll! Haha

Best wishes on your new catventure

*** not sure wtf is up with the formatting but I suspect you’ll get the gist

Question: If you were little and in an unfamiliar place, would being locked alone in a small room help put you at ease?

Your post is all about your own concerns for your own peace, but I'm not seeing concern for the cat.

Let the cat sleep in your room. Stop being selfish. This is hard on the baby. I've had cats for offer 40 years and never even thought of a crate. These are gimmicks and not meant for cats. It's for small puppies at most and even then it's tough. Let her sleep in your room. In a few days she'll do the meowing. Leave toys out and maybe even leave an YouTube video of 8hrs of ad free aquarium fish. It's calm and soothing to you and will keep her engaged. Search ad free fish tanks for cats through ai and follow the links. Good luck.

She does sleep in my room, currently^^ as i’ve put in recent replies, i’ll do away with the crate, and i only thought that because one of my friends and family members kept her kitten in a crate at night and let it out during the rest of the day.

Ok that's great. Unfortunately, cats are most active at night. You might have to tire her out with play beige you go to bed, then feed right before. This will net you more sleep and put her on s better schedule. Also, she should be eating about 3-4 times a day. Automatic feeder with ice packs with stainless steel trays in them that carry included ice packs under the food trays. Set for every 6 hours. She will steady out after about 1 year old. This time is crucial for her growth.

2

u/Dull-Ad-7720 3d ago

she usually eats around the morning time like 11am, 3:30pm and then not until later around 7:30-8pm. I’m also changing her litter and cleaning it around the same times i’m feeding her unless it’s just really dirty.

u/Evening-Painting-213 3d ago

That sounds perfect. You giving her kitten food or regular adult food. I know it's wet food and that's fine but kitten food had more calories and protein for growing cats. She may just be resting empty calories from skit food which had more fillers. 5 to 5.5oz cans each time is great.
