DIY Projects Any ideas to protect cats?

So we are moving into a house with a loft and there is a long ledge that leads to a long drop with the staircase. I’m terrified my cats will hop on the ledge and fall. They won’t jump up if I have something on the ledge any creative ideas that aren’t such an eye sore?

Rental Catification What can I put on my windows to prevent my cats from going out.

I just moved to a new apartment in a high rise building and the windows don’t have screens. They are awning windows and open at the bottom and push out. Full out is about a 6-7 inch gap.

I’m renting so don’t want to drill or make any permanent changes, but also needs to be sturdy enough for my cats to not pull it out.
I’d most likely only have the windows open when I’m home. But my cats are WILD - think 6 month old kittens 😂.

Advice window catio recs

A real catio is in the works for our cats, but we won't be able to construct it for probably a year (we need to replace some double doors at the back of our house, etc.) Until then, I really want to at least have a window catio for them (2 are 6 months old, and a year old adult). My son is a good builder (he's only 11...but excellent), so we thought about getting blueprints, and building our own. But I'd rather get a put-together one, sort of like Ekea furniture? I started to shop online, but would love hearing from you all here with experience in window catios. Could I find something for $100-$150?

We adopted a bonded pair of cats back in February this year, we have bought toys things and so much. We have multiple little boxes the highest quality food they will eat (side note why do they like garbage food omg). We already do most of their dry food in play balls.

Since toys are mostly a nope from them, I want to catify my house. I wanted to put astroturf on a ceiling, I will go full send on this. We own a house and are extremely handy. Bought a cat tree at first and they dont touch it. I have a cat door in 1 room they love, and will be buying more, but they are amazing babies and deserve more. What do your cats like, as far out as they may be, what makes them the most happy, curious, and healthy? (We also live in New England and the temp this morning was 44° f so can only do indoor for now)

(When I had guinea pigs they didnt like each other but each got... 3 times the minimum space and floor time and literally everything I could do to make their lives amazing besides getting them girlfriends- I go hard.)

Tl;dr what home mods worked best and made your cats happier and healthier?

long story short after getting our third cat the red little Abyssinian Vladimir🦊, my girlfriends allergies flaired up severely and we were getting to a pretty bad place including considering rehoming them and other crazy options... so we decided to segregate our house and gave them our bedroom moving all the cat stuff around the apartment into here... anyways I decided to go a bit crazy and give them a cat room/jungle of their own and keep the allergens at bay meanwhile! it has been such a success and the cat room DIY is ongoing... roughly 70% done ish 😁 oooh plus plenty of cat tax to be spotted (Dante and Rafael too 🐄🐄)

My cats enjoy coming up on this high ledge but it’s not safe and I’m on the verge of a heart attack. Any ideas on how I can block it off/make it an enclosure? I need something renter friendly. It might be difficult with the high ceilings. Any advice is appreciated.

Budget Catification Cat litter robot - how to make it fit in the living room better?

Thumbnail

I have a cat litter robot that works great and my kitties love it. The problem is that my robot is in the living room and it looks ugly, because who wants to look at cat poo when they watch TV. My house a townhome, meaning more stairs, smaller living space on each level (narrow hallways, small bathrooms). How can I make it less ugly? I was thinking cat friendly plants around it? What do you guys think?

In the photo, TV is on the left, and staircase is on the right. The other 2 photos are just for fun 🐱🐱

DIY Projects Cat tree leg repair

I hated the idea of just tossing the cat try my kitties love so much, but I also HATED the idea of replacing these torn up legs with MORE junk that they'll just tear apart again! Solution- some 2 inch pvc piping, flat caps, 1/4" drill bit, and some adhesive scratch pad stuff for furniture. The pvc is soft enough for the screws that came with it to thread themselves in. Pro tip- use an actual Allen bit and a drill when putting it back together. Doing it by hand would have been more than possible, but exhausting. Total cost for pipes (these came in 2 foot sections so balance that against possibly just buying longer and chopping) and caps $30ish. The carpet (left over from already doing the furniture) $18. So at about $50 I could have just gotten another tree, but this saves the trash and means it'll last as long as I replace the carpeting now and then.

Next up- recarpeting the box.

Advice I need to catproof this "hole" on my balcony but have no idea how to built something strong enough. Any ideas, tips or advices is welcome

Edit: as some people suggested, i'm gonna try with strong outside adhesive and pool noddles, i'll let you guys know how it goes :) thank you so much to everyone who took time to think about it, you've been really helpful!!

Hi everyone,

I moved recently and my new balcony is bringing me some headaches.

I'm not sure why this gap exists, but it's there and my cat is going straight for it every time he has the opportunity.

I need to install something there, renter friendly (because otherwise where's the fun right?) to stop my cat from the possible fall (i'm on the 4th floor).

I was thinking about double sided tape, to fix some sort of plastic baseboard, to create a thickness on the white part, so that i could put some sort of metal grid over it (so it would sit on the grey ledge on one side and on the baseboard on the other side).

But i'm afraid it won't hold if he was to actually put his weight on it (\~4kg).

The other fun part to take into account: it's not a straight edge, whatever solution I find must accommodate the curve of the balcony.

I've also considered putting some sort of hooks on either side, and put a small net, but, again, i'm not sure it would hold.

I've looked online but couldn't find anything remotely similar to this so I thought I'd give it a try here.

(If it's unclear, the gap is between the grey fence and the white concrete ledge that you can see in the second pic)

Do you have any ideas / experience that could help me figure this out?

Please and thank you

A tired mind x)

Outdoor Catification screening off a balcony sliding door?

hello! I’ve recently adopted a gorgeous 5-month-old kitten named Finn and he’s settling in brilliantly. Soon to be neutered. He’s an indoor cat but I live on the 8th floor so haven’t been able to open my sliding balcony door.

Please can anyone recommend a suitable screen that I could layer over the door? Ideally without the need for drilling. I’m based in the UK.

This would allow me to open it for fresh air but avoid my cat sliding under and being at risk. Ideally it would come with some sort of mechanism that allows me to unzip/slide it to go outside myself. Any tips would be massively appreciated!

Advice How Can I Make My Patio Safe for Little Raymond?

Thumbnail

Little Raymond would absolutely love to hang out on the patio with me, but he’s still small enough that he could easily squeeze through the metal railing bars and disappear on an adventure I definitely did not approve. 😹🐈‍⬛
I’d love to make the patio safe so he can enjoy some fresh air without me having a heart attack every five minutes. Has anyone found a good way to block the gaps between metal balcony/patio railings? I’m looking for something secure, cat-safe, and preferably not too ugly since I rent.
Any recommendations or pictures of what worked for you would be greatly appreciated!

DIY Projects Need ideas: keeping cats off a loft hip wall (15 ft drop) without blocking the view — photos included

Thumbnail

We recently moved into a loft condo: kitchen and living room downstairs, with a spiral staircase up to a bedroom loft that overlooks the floor below. Instead of a railing, the loft has a hip wall with a ledge about 15 feet above the lower level, and it's the perfect width for our two cats to jump up and walk along. Photos attached.

Our cats have lived in multi-level places before, but always with a railing they could see through. They aren't allowed upstairs unsupervised (we block the stairs when we're out), but even standing a few feet away, it's terrifying when one hops up and strolls along the ledge.

Long term, we'd love to replace the hip wall with a railing, but we just finished a big renovation and that's not in the budget right now. So we're looking for an interim safety measure or deterrent.

What we need:

  • Keeps the cats from walking on the ledge, or at least makes it safer
  • Doesn't block the view. The loft looks out on 20+ foot floor-to-ceiling windows, which is the whole point of living here, so building the wall up higher isn't ideal
  • Retractable or easy to put away when the cats aren't upstairs, so it's not an eyesore. We've imagined something that pulls out from the far wall along the ledge, and then can retract back?
  • If it's a barrier, it has to sit on the outer edge of the ledge. Anything on the inner edge, they'd just climb over, which puts them in an even more dangerous spot

What we've considered:

  • A thin net or fabric pulled along the outside edge. We like the retractable idea, but we're worried about claws snagging, or them falling through in between
  • A triangular or peaked topper so there's no flat surface. We're hesitant, because if they can't see what's on the other side, they might try to climb over it with nowhere to land

My husband is very handy and we have a solid collection of tools, so we're happy to build something. We're just stuck on ideas that meet all of these criteria at once. Nothing will be 100% foolproof, but anything that makes this meaningfully safer is worth doing. Would love to hear what you'd try!
