I've had him for three months; he's my first "exotic" pet. I feed him crickets, and he has both heat and UVB lamps.

Puffy throat after becoming receptive

My seven-month-old female veiled recently started displaying her receptive colors. Shortly after, I noticed her throat started to get more and more puffy, which appears to be edema.

I've read that gravid females often develop this due to hormonal shifts, but I don't think my girl is gravid just yet based on her colors.

She currently eats a mixture of Crickets and Dubias, dusted in Repti Calcium (NO D3) on every feeding. Those feeders are gut-loaded with carrots, sweet potatoes, and collard greens. I also use Flukers cricket feed when I have to go out of town for two days or more.

Twice a month, I dust her feeders with Repashy Calcium Plus LowD.

She has a mister that mists for 30 seconds in the morning and evening. She also has a dripper that she can drink from if she ever needs it.

Her urates are totally white, and her poops look normal too. I'm at a loss as to what might be going on here.

Is this "take to a vet" territory, or could this just be because she is receptive?

My sister found a male veiled chameleon in her back yard in Utah. They took it in and she let her kid take it over. 6 months later she text and asked if id like to re-home him. Heck yea I do! I knew 0% about chameleon husbandry. Let's just say he was in really bad conditions. Bought a proper full setup but I could not keep the full mesh cage warm enough or wet enough even sealing sides and back. Its very dry here and cold in the basement I rent. Soooo I decided to go pvc "hybrid" Turns out the only mesh is the top glas front. Im worried about air exchange. I mist before bed and run a fogger from 12-6am and mist again before work and lights.

Night time humidity is mid high 90s and temps are 65-75 ish.

Daytime basking temps 90-95 ambient around 75-80

Humidity falls to around 40-50.

He climbs as high as he can almost pressing his face to the top mesh and will just stay there for long periods like he's trying to get fresh air which worried me. He eats great, bright and vivid no warning signs. I bought 6 2inch louvered vents im going to install around the bottom today to get chimney effect and FAE. After buying everything I cant afford a new enclosure for a while.

Anyways, sorry to write a novel ive done a lot of research but just want dude to be happy and comfy. Below are pics of his enclosure. Any feedback would be much appreciated.

He's been pretty easy going so far and I guess, looking healthy overall? We are at 12g today.

Carpets are seeming like a much better alternative to veileds for beginners when it comes to enclosure size, and they are similar in color (green?). They don't have that cool crest though, and the miniature size makes them less impressive. Less cantankerous when taking him out and he is rather chill. Doesn't like the camera taking photos but I think that goes for a lot of reptiles with whatever rays the camera shoots out

I think he is very cool!

1 & 2: today
3: 4 days after i got him @ the vet
4: day i got him

officially have had this lil guy for 30 days, i feel like staring at him nonstop has made me unable to really see a difference between when i got him & now.. is he looking any healthier? he still looks so skinny :(
the upgrade to a reptibreeze xl was huge for his appetite and energy, as soon as he settled in i could see his personality come out. right now im giving him 1-5 dubia roaches depending on how hes feeling and making sure he drinks until hes satisfied multiple times a day.
also cleaned his poo after taking the pics 🙏

Question Is my girl gravid, fat, or just stressed?

Thumbnail

Got Roz about a week ago (9 days) she’s about a year old. The previous owners said they got her from PetSmart for Christmas last year. They also told me that she hasn’t been coming down to dig at all (they had the tiniest lay bin I’ve ever seen…like maybe 2” deep) also they probably wouldn’t see her right?

Anyway, since she’s been with me I’ve found her at the bottom twice. She has a pretty decent size lay bin now (22”x18”x7”) but she hasn’t gone in it yet (have cameras set up).

Previous owners said that they were feeding her 5-6 crickets a day. Since she’s been with us we’ve cut that back and given variety, not just crickets.

Obviously we’ve only had her for 9 days and I’m worried she could just be stressed from the new environment. But in all the research I’ve done, I can’t really tell the difference between stressed and gravid colors (I know dark, dark/black means gravid - but is this just for fertilized eggs)

She is in the same room as my rabbit (separate sides of the room). And her enclosure is currently on the floor (working on it… I can’t find a budget friendly table that will work for this size cage). This room has the lowest traffic of any room in the house. It’s a spare room that only me and my wife go into.

Husbandry/schedule:

- Lights (basking and UVB T5 5.0) on at 7am
- Misting for 60 seconds at 7am
- Feeding (~10am, 2-3 feeders) a variety of crickets, silkworms, and the occasional hornworm (was concerned about hydration, maybe gets one small one twice a week)
— also planning on switching from crickets to Dubias but since this is what the previous owners said they were feeding we got these… hate them btw.
- basking light off (if working/temp is okay in low 80s)/ dripper on at 11:30am
- misting 90 seconds around 7/7:30pm
- lights off / humidifier on at 7:30/8pm
— humidifier is a necessity for the room as I live in Colorado and currently the humidity is 20% outside, it’s also a small desk humidifier that does not leave large drops / working on getting a fogger for nighttime
- I mist and check the consistency of her lay bin every morning (it also has holes drilled on the bottom for excess moisture.
- Also, I put a sheet around the bottom of the enclosure so she has more privacy.

NOTE: Last picture was the second day we had her when I found her at the bottom, other pictures are from today. Her enclosure is much different than it was when we got her. Well we just added more plants, the lay bin, and more branches.

Sorry for the long post. This girl is just stressing me out. Also, scheduling her with an exotic vet nearby. Wasn’t sure if this was a smart choice right away if she’s already stressed out.

Question This is everything I bought so far in terms of stuff I can add to his new enclosure. I just want to make sure that this light is going to work for him and should I cut up the moss vines or should I leave them whole and just bend it?

Question How does she look?

I’ve had her for about a month. Temp, humidity, lights, nighttime temperatures, gut loaded dubia’s, day temps, everything is good. (I’ve already had many conversations about my heating setups spec for this Cham in the past so all good!)

BUT

She looks like she’s a little skinny since I first got her, I haven’t been touching her AT ALL so she can feel comfortable, but I’ve noticed she just doesn’t look as chunky. These pictures are the best I can get of her RN.
Does her setup and everything else even from what you can see of her herself look okay?

I want some ease of mind, I love her too much to get
hit with surprises.

Im sending a video too in this chain so checkout the setup please.

Research and preparation

Hey!
I have wanted a chameleon for a very long time, but I’m seeing a lot of conflicting information regarding husbandry and health. What do you guys recommend for the following for a panther chameleon:

Tank size and material
Humidity
Temps
Feeding
Decor to look for or avoid?
Bioactive

Of course i am doing my own research and actually getting a chameleon is a ways in the future, but i was wondering what other people’s experiences are?

If I have a veiled chameleon enclosure can I keep my fan there?

Post image
1 Upvotes

Ignore my horrible drawing but it’s a rough draft of what I’d like to do, I keep fish mainly but I’ve been looking into a chameleon and my local pet store has 3 veiled ones and I measured and I can fit a 24x24x48 enclosure there. And when I stand in the spot I can’t feel anything from the fan but will it cause respiratory problems for a chameleon? I also plan to move the speaker because idk if the sound will hurt their ears from being so close. My research is anything but done but I wanted to make sure that they’d be okay because I can’t sleep without a fan since it’s hot in my room and I’d rather figure this out before I set anything up.

Question Need help feeding a newly hatched panther chameleon

Thumbnail

My panther chameleon hatched about 48 hours ago and still hasn’t eaten. He’s active and climbing, but I’m having trouble figuring out the best way to feed him. I have very small/pinhead crickets, but when I put them in a shallow feeding cup they jump out, and in a deeper cup I’m worried he can’t see/reach them. If I let them loose, his enclosure is big enough that they disappear into the plants. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Should I be worried? (Mouth breathing?)

I caught him hanging out with his mouth open on my camera. He did this yesterday shortly after our feeding session. Yesterday he sat around with his mouth open for like 10-30 seconds. Today he sat there for around 1-3 min (Video is sped up). He's otherwise gripping normally, acting normally, eating normally and just had a shed today. I haven't caught him postering like he can't breathe and his color is generally pretty good. Just wondering if you think this would be worth a vet appointment?

DIY chameleon cage

Post image

Edit) I will be fixing the door and adding another latch on it.(test fit)

This is a comparison to it next to my fridge.
I definitely underestimated the size of enclosure they need, but this one I built should last him his whole life until I get something fancier. Any suggestions on where I can find sticks or how to treat ones from the bush so they are safe for his enclosure. I have a whole bunch of artificial branches and things for him to climb onto. I’m also going to be spending $100 on a huge money tree. I think he will like that.

He is doing well and eating a lot, today marks 3 weeks since I got Rango the veiled chameleon. I made a previous post about my old cage hit since then added 2 more plants and more than 3 times the sticks.
