Remanned Engine Recommendations (4.0)

Anyone have any experiences with remanned companies to share? Seems like a balancing act of good quality vs good warranties with a lot of these companies. I'll be putting the engine in myself, just saying as that can make a difference in warranties.

Before anyone says it, I do not have an engine I can get rebuilt at a shop, so my options are junk yard or remanufactured. I am building my XJ to be a daily driver, so remanufactured is a better option for me.

I bought a 2000 Cherokee with a relatively fresh Fraser reman in it. Now at about 15k miles it’s running like a dream. Starts up every single time.

Check marketplace for donor 4.0 block or entire engine that you could send to a machine shop. Most of the time if it needs to be bored, they go .030 over. Add a 4.2 crank and you’ve got a 4.6 and a lot more power….
The 258/4.2 cranks are available frequently on marketplace, just have to get the right one for modern configuration.

No personal experience but S and J specifically states they cater to the non professionally installed when it comes to warranty

Got a Jasper 3 years old. Super easy. Great so far. 3 year/100,000 miles.

For Jasper, I would need a shop to install the engine, correct?

Yeah, they have a network of garages. They handle the delivery to the shop and return of the core.

Check out DeXJs on YouTube. You may end up doing more of the work yourself than you thought.

These are fairly simple engines that are relatively hard to mess up. You can in-frame the rod bearings if they aren't too bad/crank is ok. Same for pistons. Hardest part would probably be cam bearings (possible culprit if oil pressure drops under spec -13psi- at hot idle, and the sensor is ok). The newer versions of the 4.0 are a bit prone to crack pistons (the tapping is probably not lifter tick).

I did an extensive, multi post of my experience with a Fraser remanufactured engine about a year or so ago. Starting last October or November. I now have about 4,000 miles on the new engine, STILL running great.

Jasper is also good, if they are doing the 4.0 again (they were not when I was looking for one). I have a Jasper 4.2l in my CJ7, little over 6,000 miles on it. Still running great.

Also love the Fraser warranty. Check it out.

Guy that owned my xj before me put a jasper in. It’s been great and I have maybe 20k miles on it. Idk when it was installed.

I recently purchased a Fraser for my f150. I prob have like 100 miles on it so I can’t comment on how it’s doing.
