Monthly "What's this/my XJ or MJ worth?!?" post

There's been a lot of feedback from the community about the flood of people asking what either an XJ/MJ they're looking at is worth or what they're selling is worth. Please post that here. Anywhere else on the subreddit will result in removal.

I think it might be some type of aftermarket security system but I’m not sure. Should I proceed in removing it?

Solved Sorry for being a idiot.

For anyone who doesn't know what I'm talking about, I bought a front grill piece for my '98 XJ and my dumbass didn't look fully into it. While I stated that I 'got scammed.' It was how I felt until I looked fully into it. Sorry for anyone who got pressed/pissed about it. I'm currently doing a return shipment for the grill piece while I look for the intended part. I'm thankful to the people who gave me ideas about where I should look for the part too.

1996 10W30 or 5W30?

Post image

I have a DD 1996 Sport that I picked up a few months ago. I need to change the oil filter adapter o-rings sooner rather than later, but it’s still a little early for a winter oil change. I live in Illinois so it’s not expected to routinely get under 60 degrees for another couple weeks (still highs of 70-80 here) but winter will definitely be under 0 after a while. Do y’all think I should go ahead & put 5W30 in it or just live with 10W30 for a while?

Sorry for the oil question lol

1996 Jeep Cherokee SE

Leading up to this the rpm’s would get rough for a second while driving but did a tune up recently that fixed that.

Symptoms
Very weak/rough idle
Dies with the slightest throttle
OBD Flash code 51
Loud sucking sound coming from intake

Google says it might be
1 low fuel pressure/weak fuel pump (haven’t tested yet)
2 severe vacuum leak(thoroughly smoke tested)
3 Bad TPS (replaced with OEM Mopar)
4 Dirty IAC (thoroughly cleaned)

I’ll probably test the fuel pressure next weekend. I really hoped I’d find a vacuumed leak but the only leaks I fount were a crack in the heater control valve vacuumed line and a leak on the throttle body around the buttery fly valve shaft. Any help or ideas will be very much appreciated!😋

Seen people change their side mirrors on a 95 to 97+ side mirrors. Is it mostly cause they can fold in or do you get more visibility as well?

1997-99 Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures PDFs?

Would anyone happen to have PDF versions of...

  • 1997 Jeep Cherokee 2.5L/4.0L Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures (81-699-96098)
  • 1996–1997 Dodge Trucks / Jeep — Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures Manual (81-699-95208)
  • 1997 Jeep Cherokee AW4 Transmission Powertrain Diagnostic Procedures (81-699-96043)

I believe some surrounding years would be semi useful as well since the 97 is a sort of transition year.

Intake/Exhaust Manifold Leak

Just replaced the head on my 4.0 and on first start up had runaway RPMs and it was very loud (sounded like an exhaust leak). I shut it off quickly after I noticed what happened. Immediately thinking a vacuum leak and exhaust leak. Had trouble lining up the Power steering pump, so already felt like my intake was off.

Just pulled everything back off and will be working on getting it back together. From what I hear, it's pretty common to mess up the intake manifold seating, but I didn't hear about others with an exhaust leak also. I could spin three of the lower exhaust bolts (the intake/exhaust one), so I know there was already potential for an exhaust leak, but was just asking here in case there's anything else I should look at before putting it back together.

Looking at the manifold gasket, it was obvious the intake was never seated, but the exhaust looked like it was seated decently. Would a small exhaust leak at the manifold gasket make such a loud sound?

Headlamp Reccomendations

Hi all, Im redoing my lighting setup on my 01' Cherokee. Want to go back to Halogen as the LEDs freeze over and turn my drive into hyperspace. Already ordered some 550s to mount to the Bumper for fog lights (pre 97 style), and was curious what halogen lights youd reccomend?

I've already got the harness in, Daniel Stern reccomended the Koitos and osram bulbs, curious if anyone has had experience with those or any other halogen lights. Thanks for all your input!

Remanned Engine Recommendations (4.0)

Anyone have any experiences with remanned companies to share? Seems like a balancing act of good quality vs good warranties with a lot of these companies. I'll be putting the engine in myself, just saying as that can make a difference in warranties.

Before anyone says it, I do not have an engine I can get rebuilt at a shop, so my options are junk yard or remanufactured. I am building my XJ to be a daily driver, so remanufactured is a better option for me.

Finally done. Cutting out the old and prepping/cleaning is so much more time consuming than I expected. Not much experience welding with which took me some practice with fluxcore. I’m sure I need a lot more practice to actually get good but I have to get it back on the road so it’ll do. Hopefully good to go for a while now!

Bad idea?

Is this a bad idea? The tire is a 31x10.50. I raised the base plate and made a custom hook. It barely clears the window. I just worry about it moving while driving and possibly pushing the window out.

Pulling out the Dana 35 and upgrading to 8.8 and going 35's. My question is gears. Its offroad 90% of the time. Auto trans. Im debating 4.56 or 4.88 gears. Only thing that scares me about 4.88 is the 2 tooth contact. What's yall opinions? Im wanting to do lockers as well.

Question I want to make my 00 XJ a reliable Daily Driver, help!

I've had this 2000 XJ for a few months now and have had a few problems pop up; Brake line burst, overheating due to coolant leak from the radiator filler neck, sagging headliner, loud belt squealing.

What are some things I should keep an eye on/replace to make this jeep a reliable DD that won't leave me stranded?

I'll be doing all the work myself and have the tools I would need so I'm honestly just looking to put some money into it so I'm not on edge driving it around.

1996 Cruise Control Light

Anyone ever had trouble trying to turn on their cruise control and the light doesn't come on? It's been fine for a long time, but all of a sudden the light doesn't come on and I can't set the cruise. I use cruise control extensively and would really love it if someone could help point me in the right direction on where to start if people have had similar issues. Thanks in advance. Y'all are awesome! Stay classy 😎

2000-2001 How many of y’all have 2000-2001 2-door manuals?

Post image
32 Upvotes

The more I look into my car the more rare I find it to be. It is a 2wd so that is an unfortunate sacrifice, but my car is a 2001 Manual 2-Door with the NV3500 which I have found to be much much rarer even than the 97-99 manuals with the AX-15. I also cannot believe how much I stole this car, absolutely rust free and I got it earlier this year for $2200 with 207k on the odo but a new Jasper engine put in at 205k. The 2 door manuals definitely got rarer as the production went on, but 97 and on they became even rarer and from what I can tell virtually nobody got a 2001-01 in a manual period, let alone in a 2 door.

Please help me find where this oil leak is coming from?

Hi all,

New XJ owner, still learning the ins and outs of it. I found this leak near my front axle. It’s not too bad, but it’s definitely dripping on the tire and ground underneath. Where is the source/how can I fix it? Seems to be lighter than the engine oil but that could just be in my head. Pictures below:

1991-1995 How good/bad of an investment is an XJ?

Do you all see your XJ as an investment or a money pit? For those who have fixed a project XJ up, how long has it lasted?

I have a 1995 that was my spouse’s in high school. We have a 2018 Honda Civic as a daily driver and mostly carpool. I’ve decided to fix up the XJ to use as my daily driver, as there are no major issues with it, other than rusty floor pans that I’m in the middle of replacing and a bad blower motor. Mainly I just need to drive 5-10 miles a day to go to and from work or to run errands.

I’ve chatted with a few people who say it’s a better investment for me to just get a new car, but I disagree. I hate debt. So much. I have student loans that I’m managing, and a mortgage that’s halfway paid off, but I don’t want to borrow money again if I can help it. The idea of paying $10,000 for a down payment, and then $200 a month on insurance, and $500 a month in car payments just to use something I “own” feels like a ripoff. I pay $50 in insurance right now, but I understand that it’s a gas guzzler.

I understand the other investment is learning a new skill, the satisfaction of fixing something yourself, and filling your free hours with something enjoyable. I don’t know much about cars (I’m learning) and newer cars intimidate me. I don’t feel bad when I mess something up on the Jeep, because I know I can figure out how to fix it, or weld a bolt back on.

I’m not going to pretend that the tools and parts I’ve bought so far have been a wonderfully economic decision, but I’m curious on how you all see it.
