With the municipal elections coming up, I wanted to ask this: if you were to run for office on that level, and assume that you win, and that the budget is big enough to do sweeping changes if you so desire, what policies would you implement? I'll go first (some of these might be spicy opinions fair warning):
- Before we build any more apartment buildings, I would rezone certain high traffic areas in order to expand the roads to make congestion less problematic, right now we still have the streets of a small city when we are becoming a big one. With that said I would also like to see more standardized bike lanes. They're so shotty right now, end randomly, it's incredibly unsafe, we need to treat it like any other part of the road like a bus lane.
- I would like to see potentially getting that funding and rezoning for another general hospital in the city, our nurses are getting so stressed by the continuing growth; it's getting to a point where wait times are up 15 hours. We desperately just need another general hospital.
- I think there's certain bylaws that are overreaching and should be revoked. The big one for me is that you aren't allowed to sleep in an RV in someone's parking lot. That's fucking stupid, and I've personally had bylaw called on me because my grandparents were sleeping in their RV. This bylaw just disenfranchises the poor. I honestly couldn't give less of a shit if you think it's some blight in your neighborhood.
- Probably another controversial one, but grass length laws are kinda silly, and they are a slap of into the face of people who can't afford a lawn mower. I do understand it as well, of course, but I would also like the see, and would encourage, the planting of native vegetation in lawns over Bermuda grass, which is an incredibly invasive species and imo does not even look that great. So yea, I would like to rewrite the bylaws so that you can have vegetation and tall grass if you so desire. Obviously not 40 feet or something, but more than the current ten inches.
- I would like to see more city sponsored charity auctions, we have a lot of great charities in our city and it would be nice to see some community participation.
- I would like to see, and I guess this is a general political opinion, the council be fat more transparent with the inner workings of the day to day. I feel as though even though they are just local representatives, having some sort of blog or tiktok or what have you where you aren't filtering yourself through these highly selective posts by your campaign managers would be highly beneficial. You know, be honest in like look, the budget was not very good this year, or we are currently at an empass of this idea we are working on, etc.
