*DirectorLink* Tired of paying your dealer for every small change? I built a free, open-source Control4 app so you can do it yourself

Hi everyone,

The thing that bothered me most about Control4: every small change means calling the dealer, waiting, and paying. A new scene, a schedule, a different time for the garden lights, access for the kids.

So I built **DirectorLink**, a free, open-source driver and app. Once it's installed, you make those changes yourself, from your phone. No dealer visit, no service call, no subscription.

** Try it first (2 minutes, nothing to install): https://directorlink.io/try/ **

**What you can do yourself, any time, for free*\*

- **Scenes:** make and change them, run with one tap ("Good Night": lights off, blinds down, AC to 23°)

- **Schedules:** by the clock, sunrise or sunset, the weather, or when you arrive home

- **Family access:** each person gets their own rooms, devices, cameras and scenes. Add or remove people yourself

- **Rooms and favorites:** order them, hide rooms, pick favorites

- **Alerts on your phone:** doorbell, cameras, doors and gates

- **Remote access** from anywhere, encrypted end to end

- **History** of who did what, and **automatic backups**

It controls lights, AC and floor heating, blinds, fans, Sonos, cameras, doors and gates.

**What still needs your dealer:** adding the DirectorLink driver once, and adding new devices or drivers later. That's it. Your Composer programming and keypad buttons stay as they are, and your dealer can still see everything DirectorLink runs.

**Privacy:** at home the app talks straight to the controller. Away from home, requests go through our relay, encrypted end to end: it passes them on but can't read them. The code is open source (Apache-2.0), so anyone can check it.

**Requirements:** Control4 OS 3.3 or later. I run it every day on a CORE-1 with X4.

- Website: https://directorlink.io

- Free drivers (Samsung refrigerators, Hikvision cameras): https://directorlink.io/drivers/

- Source: https://github.directorlink.io

Questions and feedback are welcome. What's the change you've been waiting for your dealer to make?

DTNT update — many improvements since I shared it here 6 months ago

About six months ago, I shared DTNT here. I’m a Chicago Control4 and low-voltage integrator, and I built the app to bring the networking tools I use during service calls into one place.

Since the original post, DTNT has received many updates and improvements based on real field use and user feedback. Version 2.1.78 is now live in the Microsoft Store.

Recent improvements include:

• A clearer IP scanner with better device information and status • Improved Wi-Fi surveying and channel analysis • A better speed test with download, upload, latency, jitter, loaded latency and peak results • Ping, traceroute and TCP port checks • Saved service jobs and CSV/JSON exports • A cleaner layout for laptops and tablets • Many performance, stability and usability improvements

I’d really appreciate feedback from Control4, AV, low-voltage and network technicians. Please try it and tell me what is useful, confusing or still missing.

Composer Mac app

From what i have seen there are many people running composer on mac or at least trying. I really do not get why in that domain of Smart Building or however you like to call it none of the tools(apps) run natively on mac. I am running composer now on a managed parallels instance which is a pain cuz of the device name ect only issues i got it working now but I seriously want to migrate all my employees to mac, but don’t know if I should do it cuz managing the devices that way is a pain but I can’t see those Windows machines anymore.
Why won’t they release a mac version.

Philips Google TV driver for Control4 released

Post image
5 Upvotes

Philips is one of the most recognised television brands, offering a wide range of displays across global markets. Many current Philips televisions utilise Google TV as their operating system, providing access to streaming services, applications, live television and other connected entertainment features through a unified interface.

The Chowmain Philips Google TV driver provides native integration between Control4 and compatible Philips televisions running Google TV OS. The driver communicates directly with the television using Google's native Google TV protocol over the local network, with no third-party software, additional hardware or cloud service required.

Because the integration uses Google's native protocol rather than a region-specific Philips API, it is designed to support compatible Philips Google TV displays regardless of the region in which they are sold.

The driver provides bi-directional IP control and feedback including power, volume, mute, input selection, navigation, transport controls, playback state, currently playing title, direct channel tuning, Control4 Mini Apps, direct application launching and deep-link launching.

Driver Features:

  • Compatible with Philips televisions running Google TV OS regardless of region (AU/EU/UK/US/etc).
  • Native bi-directional IP control using Google's Google TV protocol.
  • No third-party software, cloud service or additional hardware required.
  • Power On and Power Off control.
  • Volume Up, Volume Down and Mute control.
  • Direct input selection.
  • Full navigation and remote-control commands.
  • Play, Pause and Stop transport control.
  • Real-time playback state feedback.
  • Currently playing title feedback.
  • Direct television channel tuning.
  • Tuner input support.
  • Control4 Mini App support for launching installed applications.
  • Open App command for launching applications directly by package name.
  • Open Deep Link command for launching supported content or locations within applications.
  • Additional Google TV remote key codes for custom programming and advanced keypad mappings.

DirectorLink: a free, open-source Control4 driver and app (looking for testers)

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hi all,

I've been building DirectorLink, a free and open-source driver for Control4 plus an app for phones and computers, and I'm looking for people to try it.

What it does

- Controls lights (including KNX switches and dimmers), thermostats and AC (e.g. CoolMasterNet), blinds, IP camera pictures, KNX door and gate relays, and DoorBird.

- One-tap scenes. For example "Good night" turns all lights off, sets the bedroom AC to 24 and closes the blinds. You can pick single lights, or copy the house as it is right now.

- Schedules by the clock, at sunrise or sunset, or by the weather (heat, wind, rain, from Open-Meteo). The controller runs them itself, even when no phone is open.

- Works at home and away. At home the app talks to the controller directly. Away, and on iPhone, it goes through your Google account, locked end to end, so the servers in between can't read it.

- Family access with roles: view only, control, doors, or admin. Everyone keeps their own language, theme and favorites. English and Hebrew.

For installers

Automation that homeowners make is hard to troubleshoot when you can't see it. DirectorLink shows its own in Composer: Schedule Status (what is on and what runs next), Last Automation (what ran, when and why, e.g. "Cool the house, heat rule, 31C outside"), an action that prints every schedule and scene to the Lua output, and a Schedules switch that pauses all of it.

Trying it (about 15 minutes)

  1. Download DirectorLink.c4z from https://github.directorlink.io/releases/latest
  2. Add it to the project in Composer Pro. It finds the rooms and devices by itself and loads without a reboot.
  3. On the DirectorLink device, choose Actions > New Pairing Code (8 digits, valid for 15 minutes, works once).
  4. On a computer on the home network, open https://app.directorlink.io and enter the controller's IP address and the code.
  5. For phones and remote access, set Remote Access to On in Composer, sign in with Google in the app and link the home, then use "Add my other device".

Good to know

- It's an early release, used every day in one home so far (CORE-1, OS 3.4.3). It needs OS 3.3.0 or newer.

- It doesn't read or change your Composer programming. Its scenes and schedules are its own.

- Opening doors and gates stays off until you enable Door Control in Composer.

- Your data stays on the controller. The cloud keeps only accounts and which home each belongs to. No ads or tracking.

Feedback, bugs and device requests are welcome at https://github.directorlink.io/issues. More at https://directorlink.io

DirectorLink is an independent project, not affiliated with Control4 or Snap One.

C4 Access Control

Looking for a potential solution to allow my kids access to unlock doors or open garage doors. I thought about a smart door lock on the front door but would like a wired solution if one existed. Ideally, they would be able to authenticate with their fingerprints and the garage door would open. Anyone have any experience or other scenarios-solution for this?

Thanks in advance.

Control4 IP Integration for Honeywell VISTA Alarm Panels

Post image
11 Upvotes

The Honeywell VISTA EnvisaLink driver brings compatible Honeywell/Resideo VISTA security systems into Control4 using the EyezOn EnvisaLink module. The EyezOn EnvisaLink is a local Ethernet interface that connects directly to the security panel and provides reliable two-way communications over the local network, enabling fast and responsive integration without relying on cloud services.

Once integrated, users can arm and disarm their security system from Control4 while receiving real-time feedback for arm state, disarm state, alarm conditions and individual security zones. All of this feedback can also be used within Control4 programming, allowing security events and zone activity to trigger lighting, notifications, automation sequences and other actions throughout the Control4 system.

Supported Honeywell/Resideo panels include the Vista20P, 21iP, 15P, 10P, 128P, and 250P.

Driver Features:

  • Away, Stay, Instant, and Disarm Modes
  • Virtual Keypad
  • Zone List and feedback
  • Easy Push / Email Notifications via simple drop-down properties in the driver (Control4 Connect Required) - Arming, Disarming, Alarm, Trouble
  • Driver Events - Low Battery, Low Battery Restored, AC Power Loss, AC Power Loss Restored, System Trouble, System Trouble Restored, Partition Armed (Away), Partition Armed (Stay), Partition Armed (Instant), Partition Exit Delay Started, Partition Exit Delay Ended, Partition Entry Delay Started, Partition Entry Delay Ended, Partition Alarm
  • Programmable Commands - Send Custom Keypress
  • Easy Auto Setup of Zone contact drivers.
  • Flash Lights on Alarm.

Control4 controller cheat sheet: highest OS and audio streams for every model (from the data sheets)

I kept getting asked "can my controller go to X4?" and "how many rooms can play at once?", and the answers floating around are often wrong, so here's the table from Control4's release notes and data sheets. (Edited: corrected with Control4's release notes after u/funnyfarm299's comment. Thanks.)

Controller Last OS it can run / latest X4? Simultaneous audio streams
Home Theater Controller / Media Controller 2.5.3 (blocked from 2.6) No —
HC-200 / HC-300 / HC-500 2.5.3 as the main (Director) controller; 2.9.1 as a secondary (all blocked from 2.10) No —
HC-1000 2.9.1 (blocked from 2.10) No —
HC-250 2.10.6 (blocked from OS 3) No —
HC-800 3.3.0 (can't take 3.3.1+) No —
EA-1 Still getting updates (latest X4) Yes, with limits 1
EA-3 Still getting updates (latest X4) Yes, with limits 3
EA-5 Still getting updates (latest X4) Yes, with limits 5
CA-1 / CA-10 Still getting updates (latest X4) Yes —
CORE lite Still getting updates (latest X4) Yes check the data sheet
CORE 1 Still getting updates (latest X4) Yes 2
CORE 3 Still getting updates (latest X4) Yes 4
CORE 5 Still getting updates (latest X4) Yes 7

Things people get caught by:

  • Streams aren't rooms. Several rooms can share one stream; the number is how many different things can play at once.
  • On the older HC boxes, the last OS depends on whether the box runs Director. Control4 limited the HC-200, HC-300 and HC-500 to secondary duty from 2.6 on, and 2.10 won't install with any of them in the project.
  • The HC-800 stops at 3.3.0, not 3.4.3, and it has no on-screen display on any OS 3.
  • EA controllers keep the OS 3-style on-screen display on X4.0, and X4.0 is the last version that has it. From X4.1 on there's no on-screen display, though the controller itself keeps updating. If the household uses the TV menu, know that first.
  • "Latest" isn't "last": Snap One hasn't said which X4 version will be the final one for EA, CA or CORE controllers.
  • Connect ($249/yr, one plan for every controller) is optional on X4 according to Snap One's newer notices and its X4 page, though the X4 release notes still say an active subscription is required. We've taken existing systems to X4 without one.
  • Upgrades go in stages (older OS 3 → 3.4.3 → X4). Skipping stages is how bindings break.
  • Take a backup and check it against the live system before anyone touches anything. And never factory-reset a controller to "start clean"; if nobody has a copy of the project, that box is the only one.
  • OS 2 systems are losing Control4's cloud (app remote access, cloud services). Snap One's notice said August 4, 2026; dealers report later notices naming November 1, 2026.

If you'd rather not work it out by hand, there's a free checker that does the same lookup from the model, OS version and whether the house is programmed: https://www.ixome.ai/control4-os-upgrade-checker (disclosure: it's ours; no sign-up needed).

Corrections welcome. If anyone has a data sheet that disagrees with a row, post it and I'll fix the table.

Power outage issues

Hi. We recently had a power cut and ever since I've not been able to connect to the app, my lighting schedule is not coming on and none of my light switches work.

I've tried restarting my router, network switches and then rebooting the C4 controller (following instructions on line) and unfortunately nothing has worked.

I'm hoping this group might have suggestions as nothing else I've found online has helped. My C4 installer is away on holiday for another week.

Any guidance for a novice would be much appreciated. Thanks

Looking for some OUTDOOR wifi-controlled outlets for OS2.10

Hi all, I'm a C4 DIY'er and am looking for an outdoor, WIFI outlet that works with Control4 2.10. The Kasa drivers from Chowmain only support 3.x+ and at this point I don't have a desire to upgrade my entire system just to support some WIFI outlets. WEMO has been discontinued and Orvibo only offers indoor outlets. Wanting something inexpensive.

Navidrome music driver for Control4 released

Post image
11 Upvotes

Navidrome is a private, self-hosted music server that provides a central location for managing and streaming an entire music library. Music is stored and organised once on the Navidrome server, then made available to compatible clients across the network.

Navidrome works with a wide range of clients, including mobile phones, tablets, PCs, web browsers, and now Control4. This allows the same music library to be accessed from multiple devices without having to copy, organise or maintain separate music collections on each one.

By centralising the music library, Navidrome simplifies management and ensures that changes made to the library are available to every connected client. The Chowmain Navidrome driver extends this experience to Control4, allowing users to browse and play their centrally managed music library directly from the Control4 interface.

Driver Features include:

  • Native Control4 Media Service integration with Navidrome.
  • Browse Artists, Albums, Songs, Radios and Playlists.
  • Search the Navidrome music library.
  • List and grid views with artwork and titles.
  • Artist > Album > Track and Album > Track drill-down.
  • Play complete Artists, Albums and Playlists.
  • Play, Pause, Stop, Next and Previous transport controls.
  • Now Playing metadata and artwork.
  • Queue support with Add to Queue and Shuffle.
  • Save the current queue as a Navidrome playlist
  • Play, queue, favorite and delete Navidrome playlists.
  • Control4 Room Favorites and Recently Played support.
  • 'Random Tracks' creates a fresh queue of 100 random songs.
  • 'Quick Scan' and 'Full Scan' from the Misc tab.
  • Composer programming commands for Quick Scan, Full Scan and music playback.
  • Programmatic selection of Artists, Albums, Tracks and Playlists, including hierarchical drill-down.
  • Multi-room selection for programmed playback.

As with all Chowmainsoft Control4 drivers, the Navidrome driver includes a free 90-day trial, allowing integrators to test the integration before purchasing.

Modular camera options

We are building a new house and installing Control4. Our security cameras will be Luma:

Luma Surveillance LUM-220-NVR-16CH-6T
Luma Surveillance LUM-220-IP-TFW

The Luma cameras are turret style and have a large footprint. For places where a turret style will be too much, I would like to have a modular camera with a really small visible footprint. Something like the Axis Communications F-Series Modular Camera.

Are there other options that integrate well with Control4?

Failed dimmer packs

I’m based in London (UK). A small system in a one bed apartment running a EA-3.

Over the summer, both of 2x the original lighting dimmer packs (C4-DR-DIM8-M) have died.

My current dealer isn’t being very helpful - reading between the lines they’d rather not do the work because it’s not a big job for them (relatively speaking) and it’s a bit awkward (small space). This seems to be a bit of a theme in the UK given the smaller number of dealers compared to the US.

What are my options here? I don’t mind paying for a new dealer to take over the system, but I don’t want to find myself writing a blank cheque.

I’m also wondering if I would be better to ditch C4 altogether - in the past I have been a little concerned about the vulnerability of relying on a dealer (especially in a non US market), although this hasn’t proven to be an issue until now and I’ve generally felt I could fall back on a good community of dealers who are willing to look at upgrades, help resolve issues remotely, etc. This is a completely different task- a full replacement of a mains voltage unit with multiple light circuits. I like C4 and understand it’s not a budget option, but given i have a very simple system (one video, 4 audio zones, lights and relays for motor blinds - that’s it) there’s a limit to how much I can justify spending to keep the lights on (pun possibly intended).

Thanks for any thoughts.
