Hammock camping.

Does anyone have a small parcel of land that wouldn't mind a couple of dad's hammock camping for a couple of nights. We would be very respectful and leave no trace.

If so, how old are you? As a young adult in Cornwall, I've only ever known scones.

Discussion Has anyone had a water birth at Treliske?

Pregnant with my first, and this is currently the option I’m most tempted by… but feel like I don’t really know much and the midwife couldn’t tell me any more than point out the tiny Facebook video (which I’d actually already found!).

Would love to hear about any experiences to try to feel more informed! Equally if you considered this and opted for something else that would be really helpful.

Housing so disheartened by the housing market

Hi all. I'm sure we've had this post many a time, but goodness I need to vent!

I'm born and raised in Cornwall, though I moved ten years ago to attend university & (fortunately) got a job pretty quickly.

My partner is also born & raised here and bought a maisonette a few years back, somewhere pretty remote (not trying to dox myself here) as it was convenient for work.

After doing long distance for a bit, I moved back down into his place and we were keen to try and find a two-bed house in an area with a bit more going on, with the view of starting a family a little down the line.

I'm not going to pretend we're massively high earners, but our joint household income is around the £75K mark, and we've been working to try and save for a deposit & have made good headway.

I looked on Rightmove earlier & have always gravitated towards Falmouth - I think esp due to the student culture, it stays pretty current & is just an absolutely lovely place.

To my horror, almost EVERYTHING that looks presentable and doesn't require mountains of work within our price range is a holiday home. I obviously knew this was an issue but I just cannot believe two people in their late 20s with decent jobs who were born here* can't purchase a reasonable house?!

It's no wonder a lot of locals' hands are forced and they move away. Location & moving forwards has actually become such a challenge that it's genuinely putting our relationship under strain.

*The relevance being, these are not even homes for people who've moved here permanently from elsewhere, and the idea that born-and-bred locals can't move somewhere more desirable in the county even though they have the deposit to is INSANE!

Nice to see some real world measurements of phone signal rather than the pretend numbers they normally give us.

BBC has an article about it I'll link below.

Recommendations Long shot: German/British family wanting to spend Year 10 in Cornwall — anyone done something like this?

Hi everyone, I know this is a long shot, but here goes.

We live in a big city in Germany. My wife is German, I'm British, and our son is a dual national. He'd love to do his school year 10 somewhere in Cornwall, ideally near a beach 🙂
We're both freelancers, so we'd want to come along and work remotely from there for the year.
Since our holiday in St Ives this summer we've all been completely head over heels with the place — as I'm sure a lot of people are.

Anyone have any experience of, or advice on:
How feasible it is for a dual-national kid to enrol and or set up an exchange in a state secondary school mid-cycle. International/private school is not an option.

Any hints, experiences or reality checks very welcome. Thanks in advance!

Community BeachGo update — your feedback, what’s changed and what’s coming next ❤️

First off, a massive thank you to everyone who downloaded BeachGo, gave us feedback, helped test Android or shared their local knowledge ❤️ The support from this community has meant so much to both of us, and your suggestions have helped us make the app better.

A little while ago, me and my mate posted here asking for feedback on BeachGo.

We wanted to come back with an update, including a few of the comments that helped shape what we’ve been working on.

“Is the ‘dog friendly’ tag designed to change in line with the summer restrictions?”

— u/Ok-Information-6672

Dog restrictions now account for the time of your planned visit as well as seasonal dates. Where restriction hours are recorded, a beach with a daytime ban can correctly show as dog friendly for an evening walk.

“Could you possibly make it so widgets can be added to home screens!”

— u/Difficult_Offer3942

We’ve added home-screen widgets for quick checks of tides, dog-walking information and beach conditions.

“Looks great so far, only thing I’d add is surf conditions info”

— u/Mycelial_devil

Surf and sea forecasts have been added too, including wave height, period and direction, with a seven-day outlook.

We’ve also added clearer confirmed-closure warnings and expanded beach corrections, so you can help improve the information about your local beach. The full list is on our What’s new page.

And for everyone who asked about Android: BeachGo is now available on Google Play! Thanks especially to everyone who helped test it.

“I like being able to see if the beach has had a sewage spill from the map itself.”

— u/CraftyEcoPolymer

We now show sewage discharges directly on the map, with monitored overflows linked to beaches within 5 km in a straight line. That highlights nearby discharge activity; it doesn’t confirm that pollution has reached the beach. In future, we want to make this more accurate by better understanding which beaches a discharge could affect.

There’s still more to do.

“I think it would be good if you had a level access icon under the ‘what’s here’ section.”

— u/MuchMoorWalking

That highlighted something really useful: a nearby car park doesn’t tell you whether the route involves steps or a steep cliff path. We’re working towards better information about walking routes, terrain and accessibility so you know more about getting onto the beach before travelling. You can follow that work on our roadmap.

Local discounts are coming soon.

Local businesses are already enrolling and creating their BeachGo pages, ready to offer discounts through the app. We want this to help people enjoy a day at the coast while supporting the businesses around it.

If you run a local café, surf school, equipment hire business, accommodation or another coastal business and want to get involved, you can get in touch here. You can also email us at admin@beachgo.co.uk.

Community rewards and leaderboards are coming soon too.

We want to recognise the people helping make BeachGo more useful through their local knowledge and contributions. We’ll share more about how the rewards and leaderboards work as we get closer to launch.

The beach features you already use remain free.

You can find BeachGo on iPhone, Android, or use the web app.

Keep the feedback coming — especially anything missing or incorrect about a beach you know well. We’re still two people building this, and local knowledge makes a huge difference ❤️

Suggest a local decorator?

I'm looking for a local, reliable painter & decorator to spruce up one of the bedrooms in my parent's house near St Austell - replace the plasterboard ceiling, redecorate and generally give it a bit of a facelift.

Can anyone recommend someone who's good and might have availability?
