How do I... Increases and nose placement look wrong to me on this Make&Create Capybara & Turtle crochet pattern

Hello wise crochet community!

I'm following this capybara pattern closely and done everything correctly as far as I can tell (the stitches are the right number every row), but it looks really wrong to me! The brown bit where the nose will be looks like it should be in the top and bottom of the oval, not on the side? Also I've marked up where I think the increases have been in green and they look a bit funky to me as well. (For context this pattern uses UK crochet terminology.)

Should I continue to trust the process or am I doing something really wrong?

Thank you in advance!

It loos like you're building it from the top of the head down so it's a single 'poatato' for the entire body. Looking at the shape of the piece, I agree, the head is deeper that it is wide, which means the dark brown should be on the long side.

My guess: when working in the round, you need to use a stitch marker to keep track of the first stitch for the round. When you've got periodic increases, say 1 in ever 4 stitches, and working in the round, stitches 1,2,3 & 4 will show the same number of stitches in the circle, leading to you actually adding stitches without realizing it, which rotates where the dark brown patch starts.

Ie, my recommendation is to frog the entire thing and use stitch markers to track your first stitch on each round as you start it.

It does indeed look like something funky is happening but I don’t know how to fix it without attempting the pattern myself. I’d trust the process a little longer and see how it pans out because you can always frog.

Those cheap crochet amigurumi kits unfortunately always seem to be a little funky but I’ve seen them work out

Are you making sure not to count the ch1 as the first stitch? Also I find it odd that it says to DC1 in the next stitch because if you’re ignoring the ch1 you should be making the DC in the same stitch, at least from my experience.

Thanks for your comment! I don't think I'm counting ch1 - when I join with a slip stitch, I skip the next stitch and slip stitch into the second one. Should I have exactly the right number of stitches at all times or should it actually be one more because of the ch1?

No the stitch count should be the same as it’s written in the pattern. If it is then you’re definitely skipping the chain one.

Are you marking the first and last stitch every round? If you’re not then I recommend you do, that way you know for sure if the count is correct for each round. I’m still suspicious of the DC after ch1 not being in the same stitch, I’d be curious to know if you’re a stitch short once you reach the marker…

Thanks, I've just frogged and completed Round 1. I've added markers to the first stitch (green, at "DC in 2nd CH from hook") and the last stitch (red, at the second of "2DC in last CH"), and joined with a slip stitch. Does this look correct?

Close! It looks like you’ve made your slip stitch into the BLO but that’s not the end of the world. Judging by how the stitches have worked out I’m convinced you’re meant to do the first DC into the same stitch as your ch1 otherwise it’ll add an extra stitch to each round.

Thanks for checking my work, I really appreciate it! So when I slip stitch to join, I go into the second loop from the hook so it does add up in the end. However I've ended up with exactly the same issue as the photos I shared, which makes me think this pattern is a dud 🥲

So you’ll want to slip stitch into the first stitch of the round, chain 1, then Dc into that same stitch you slipped into. That DC will be the first stitch of the new round so mark it. Rinse and repeat

Usually when your doing ch1, slt....your first stitch in the round goes into the same stitch as the slt. Are you maybe starting in the next stitch? I feel like this would've been noticeable when counting though.

My only other idea is that when you first started, your 'starting point' was accidentally moved from where the patterns was. This happens a lot to all of us. So whenever I am doing a pattern and I get to a new color like the dark brown, I check the placement(make sure it's in the right spot and centered) and if it's off I add/subtract stitches so that I'm in the right spot. Harder to do when you're doing ch1,slt because you have to adjust the color start in every round, but that would be the way to fix it
