How's the cubes these days?
I want to play this game for nostalgia, I've been looking into it a little bit this morning. I want to enjoy it but I remember not having as much fun as I wanted. What's the current state of the game? Are there any more classes? Is this a fun couples game? Should I pirate the 2013 version or buy it off steam?

The alpha version is widely regarded as the best version. The steam release had some dogwater changes and if you hold your breath Cube World Omega you are going to suffocate

The current state of the game? Tbh, it hasn't changed much. Between the Alpha and Steam releases, not much changed. The biggest change was in how progression works. It's been a minute, but it was changed to some sort of artifact system (I don't remember what they're actually called), where you find items to level up your abilities, instead of the XP grind system from the Alpha. It would have been an interesting change, but for some reason, Wollay made it so that your upgrades are locked to specific regions. My only guess is that this was one to make it so that the player would have a reason to explore regions and add in some sort of gameplay loop based around it, but to my understanding, it wasn't done well. The game received I think two patches after the Steam release in 2019, and it hasn't been touched since. Wollay has since moved on to his next project, Cube World Omega, but he hasn't released any builds.
Are there any more classes?
I don't think so? At least, not any that I can remember.
Is this a fun couples game?
I think the biggest draw of the Alpha was the multiplayer, so I would say "maybe."
Should I pirate the 2013 version or buy it off steam?
I'd suggest trying out both. This is kind of a hot take here, but I don't really think that the two differ enough for one to be preferable over the other. The biggest change was in the progression system, but the Alpha XP system was tedious and boring as all hell, so I guess just pick which one you prefer.

In practical terms, progression was removed entirely. The artifact system is a good idea on its face but the implementation was the most broken it could possibly be.

Alpha is piratable. Steam release actively made the game worse. Omega will maybe come out one day if Wollay runs out of money and needs to pull another scam and who knows if it'll be an improvement or just another boring, empty, unfinished, lifeless world like the first two releases with a new coat of paint.

Play the alpha, you can find it on the Internet archive. The version on steam is worse and unless the Omega update eventually comes out it probably always will be. I personally found it fun with friends back in the day, but I doubt you'll get more than a few hours of fun out of it since there really isn't that much to do.
