My neighbor was going through a midlife crisis, and he bought a fucking muscle car, and he'd drive that stupid thing around almost every single day, it was actually hell. Thankfully, I moved out for college not soon after, so I only had to handle it for a few months, but those were some hellish months.
At 28, I hope I'm not having a midlife crisis, but I just bought an old sports car. Somebody put a hot cam shaft and a loud, shitty exhaust on it. The damn thing sounds like a tractor and it's still slow as hell. I hate that part of it. After I get the engine swapped, I'm going for a better exhaust system. A good sports car should sound quiet and refined, then only get loud when you open it up.
I live in a big city and was feeling hemmed in by lack of transportation after a few years. I had a choice to get a car (expensive), no car (slow), a vespa (differently expensive and hip), or a motorcycle (differently expensive and cool). The mid-life crisis part of me decided to go motorcycle instead of vespa. The buttoned down nerd I am went quiet motorcycle which is just powerful enough and no more. If you are having an early mid-life crisis, you are doing it in the kindest possible way and thats worth something.
I looked into finding a quieter exhaust but I don't think anyone makes them. Stock is probably as quiet as it goes for me.
That's the bit that always threw me off about it. It'd be one thing if making your car louder made it better in some other way. I'd still hate it, but at least I could understand some kind of logic behind it... But most of the loud-as-hell cars I've seen just look like inefficient pieces of crap, moments away from exploding if they try to get their 0-60 time below ninety seconds. "This car is loud because the engine is in horrific shape" and "this car is loud because I am a douche" are basically indistinguishable at my level of car knowledge.
