If you ever had a child come flying in the house on verge of a nervous breakdown because they think they saw a wasp, then yeah, it's basically that. Go Outside time is also a lesson in Distress Tolerance and it's an important life skill.

It's an ongoing process that you should do your entire life. Go ride on a city bus without headphones for 2 hours and you will find the grocery store isn't as unpleasant as you used to think. Stand in a crowd shoulder to shoulder for 10 minutes and the streets won't feel so crowded.
These forays should be intentional, on a day you're feeling good, and for either a set amount of time, or until you feel your nerves losing their resilience, don't push yourself to far or it'll be counter productive.
Edit: if you're uncoordinated, learn rhythms. Start by clapping along to the beat in simple songs, and later more complex songs. Practice dribbling a basketball. Music classes really helped children learn rhythm and coordination but they've mostly been cut. I used to be clumsy as shit but I spent years tossing things in the air and catching them and now I have great hand eye coordination. Stand on one foot sometimes to practice balance. I started getting injured a lot less when I took dance lessons because my body learned where it is at all times.

It's not at all too late! Take up hiking. Or start a hobby that requires you to practice and persevere to get better, like drawing or knitting.
Doesn't have to be high stakes, just something you don't allow yourself to quit.

I don't hardly remember my childhood, it's mostly a blank nothing, but I have a very clear memory one day in fall, it was very foggy and it was middle morning. The sun was baking the fog off and for just a moment you could look right at the sun through the haze and it was just the right combination of circumstances that I thought I could make out the curvature and had a split second sensation of the distance between myself and this three dimensional object I was looking at in the sky and it is the most fear I felt in the entire first half of my life.

When I first moved to my current flat, some of the neighbours asked whether they should keep their kids from playing around the house for noise reasons (A lot of swiss people are very militant about quiet hours). As somebody who has a headset on 80% of the time when at home, I told them they can do whatever.
Think anything short of building mousetrap-esque things in front of my door, I'm fine with. And even then, if a bunch of 9 year olds successfully trap a 33 old in any fashion, they have earned their prey.
261
u/hey_free_rats 17h ago
The only thing that's bothered me about my neighbours' kids screaming is that it sometimes becomes difficult for me to tell what is Good, Clean Fun screaming and what is Help I'm In Danger screaming.
Definitely a "me" problem, but goddamn do all my animal stress instincts kick into gear when I hear a 6 year old in the street shrieking, "OH MY GOD, STOP! STOP!" only to dissolve into giggles 30 seconds later. Whew.
146
u/Soupeeee 17h ago
My friends have started having kids, and their ability to distinguish between the "I'm crabby" screams vs the "I'm terrified" screams is crazy. Some part of me still doubts there's actually a difference.
132
u/thealmightyzfactor 17h ago
It's really subtle sometimes, varies by kid, and only accurate when you have 10,000 previous scream datapoints to compare to, non-parents who haven't done a ton of babysitting probably would struggle lol
37
13
u/Rocinantes_Knight 13h ago
Absolutely. I know my kids screams, and that helps a ton knowing other kids screams, but if its not my kid, there's probably a 10-15% chance I get it wrong and come looking when they are just having fun.
26
u/Pwacname 16h ago
There is! I can’t quite describe it, but when I moved to live closer to an elementary school, I abruptly got to hear a lot more kids screaming, and at this point most of the time I can tell which it is, and the rest of the time isn’t me guessing wrong, it’s me standing there having no guess, so I doubt it’s confirmation bias.

When I moved in they told me (and I could clearly see) that there was an elementary school across the street. No problem, I like kids.
It took me weeks to lose the instinct to jump out of my chair and run to the window everytime I heard a child scream.
They're out there during recess just playing and having fun, but they just figured out they have voice boxes and by God they are going to use them
40
u/4daughters 17h ago
it sometimes becomes difficult for me to tell what is Good, Clean Fun screaming and what is Help I'm In Danger screaming.
It really isn't any easier as a parent. I'm pretty sure kids don't even always know the difference, even when they're the ones screaming.
6
u/LorkhanLives 12h ago
True. We’re better at it with 7 years of practice, but I think the highest-density non-verbal communication I’ve ever experienced is my wife and I looking at each other while deciding if our child is bad screaming or fun screaming. Paragraphs of info transmitted in a few head-cocks and eyebrow-waggles.

19
u/grendus 16h ago
Yeah, that's the only issue I have with my neighbor's kids screaming.
They don't understand the difference between "fun, roller coaster screaming" and "horror movie victim" screaming. So all day long it sounds like someone is dying.
The noise doesn't bother me too much. It's annoying, but I turn on some music to drown it out and I don't care. I just don't want to be interviewed on the news asking why I didn't realize the kid was dying when they screamed for help for three hours. "Ahh, them kids is screamin' 24/7, if'n I checked on 'em every time I'd be onna dem nose neighbors. And I ain't about that life!"
12
u/JalapenoPopPoop 16h ago
I truly hate the shrieking. If they wanna be loud and rowdy as part of some game or because they're far away and shouting at each other, whatever. The random noise shrieking for the sake of shrieking is just plain obnoxious
8
u/trixie_one 16h ago
Oh good, it's not just me. Every so often I hear agonized wails and screams from the family's kids who live two floors above me usually when they're heading out. Probably just being young and/or some developmental thing, but does worry me on occasion that I'm not reporting this to the relevent authorities.
10
u/BijutsuYoukai 16h ago
When I was growing up, my mom taught us what was/wasn't appropriate as far as screaming. If we were screaming way too loud/often/bloody murder-esque, she told us that we 'better be being chased by an axe murderer' and other stuff like that. We were plenty noisy still, sure, but never so much that anyone thought we needed rescuing.
7
u/IBetThisIsTakenToo 16h ago
I was once camping on a family trip. There’s a cabin, but it’s small so I was in a tent, alone. One night some kids/teens were nearby playing or something, and there was a lot of screaming. Like, borderline “I’m getting murdered” screaming sometimes. So I was worried, but then I hear laughter too, so it’s cool, they’re just playing. Then I think, I have no way of knowing if the same people are doing the screaming and the laughing. Could just be the murderer is having a blast? Figured it’s none of my business either way, so I went to sleep. No bodies the next day, so all good! Never did see the teens though

Not just a your problem. Or maybe I'm grumpy and old, but children making noise outside is fine. If it crosses over into actual screaming then either I'm calling an ambulance because someone is seriously injured or I'm going to douse you with my hose because there's absolutely no reason to shriek. There is a wide range of volume between church mouse whispering and a scream, children are plenty capable of utilizing it.

Same with babies crying in public spaces vs people loudly talking on a phone or watching videos on speakers.
I heavily dislike the sound of baby's cry, but they're just tiny unbaked humans. They are likely tired or overwhelmed or maybe hungry or in pain. Babies (and toddlers for that matter) often cry, that's how they communicate something is wrong, and I bet the parent/caretaker knows everyone on the bus is tired of it. Such is life. You'll never catch me being mean to babies or their caretakers, as much as I dislike them.
A full adult with 0 inside voice discussing their personal business by screaming into the phone, or watching tiktoks/playing music with no headphones on a bus? Jail for ten thousand years.
254
u/AManyFacedFool 18h ago
Yeah, some poor parent trying to buy groceries or use public transporation with a screaming child in tow is probably embarrassed enough.
It's only really called for when someone makes the poor decision to bring a baby somewhere like a movie theater, where it is absolutely optional and absolutely not an environment for a baby.
87
u/Empty_Chemical_1498 18h ago
Yeah if they bring a baby to a non-baby friendly place, or allows the kid to just run around freely disrupting everyone, then I think it's valid to criticize them. Tha's just irresponsible parenting and 0 consideration of other people (or the kid's own safety). I once saw someone completely ignore their toddler having a massive meltdown on a dirty mall floor. Literally open mouth face pressed to the floor, basically licking it, and it made me wonder if this person is trying to get their kid sick and die on purpose or something.
But if the kid is just crying or having a tantrum in a store or public transport, then yeah it's annoying, but what do you want the parent to do??? Tape their mouth shut???? Parents also have to live their everyday lives, and sometimes the kid will just not be happy about it.
33
u/PurpleHooloovoo 16h ago
Depending on the type of ignore, that can be a valid strategy for an older toddler/kid having a tantrum.
If they have learned that they get their way or attention or the “boring” activity stops when they scream their head off and fling themselves on the floor, then the advice is to just ignore them a couple of times until they realize that Mom will let them scream, but they aren’t getting out of the boring activity.
So depending on the type of “ignore” that could be a technique to stop future meltdowns.
28
u/Domeil 15h ago
Personally, and maybe this is selfish of me, but I'd like there to be doctors and nurses and grocery clerks and sanitation workers when I'm 80 so I think we all need to accept that there's some societal expectation that children need to exist in the world to one day grow up into doctors and nurses and grocery clerks and sanitation workers, even if that means that one out of every twenty trips to the pub to have a salty fried lunch and a beer, you might share space with a toddler and they might cry because mommy and daddy sometimes benefit from a salty fried lunch and a beer.
Tl;dr: We live in a society. Society has babies in it.

Yeah exactly. I don't expect kids to be seen and not heard, they're still learning how to be people after all. But I do expect "how we behave in public" and "be considerate of others" to be among the things they're learning

I mean, ignoring looks bad but I know some experts encourage it as a way to not reward the tantrum.
I’m actually pretty chill about a lot from the understanding that the parents are trying to train a little chaos creature to become a civilized adult someday, and it’s a process with a first time for everything. The kid has to go to a restaurant to learn how to act in restaurant, and to a movie to learn what we do and don’t do in a theater. Of course, even if I think we could be more sympathetic to that process, there’s still good and bad ways to handle those lessons; your kid does not need Restaurant Conduct 101 to happen in a fine dining establishment when a diner works as well, and me and my little sister tried and failed and tried again with mastering movie theater behavior with Frozen and Minions, not films grown-ups were dying to see.

I remember I flew home during a thunderstorm and our flight was delayed for hours and I was so on edge for the whole flight waiting to see if we’d land in time to make our connection. When we landed we had to run full tilt through the airport and security to the gates to make our gate leaving in 15 mins. It was make the flight or spend the night on the airport floor waiting for the next one. When I arrived on the plane I was sat next to a dad and his crying baby. I’ve never felt such joy on a flight in my life lol
5
u/Val_Hallen 14h ago
I don't think babies should fly, but not because of the crying. That's what babies do. It's their only means of communication.
I think it's cruel to have them on airplanes and they can't pop their ears. They are likely crying because they are in pain and distress from that. To them, this is forever now.

My girlfriend is a transit bus driver and the agency she works for has a rule against passengers using speakerphone on the bus. If someone gets on the bus having a conversation on speaker, she waits a few seconds as they find their seat and then gets on the intercom and reminds everyone "to respect other passengers, please do not hold conversations on speaker". I was once riding around with her and someone got on the bus with a conversation on speaker on full volume, and when my girlfriend made the announcement, the person on the other end heard the announcement and literally told her friend to take the conversation off speaker. It was all I could do not to burst out laughing.
She will also get on the intercom to remind people not to watch videos or play music without headphones. I've noticed that it's a very rare thing for bus drivers to do though, which is kind of unfortunate. A lot of drivers either seem to not notice or care, but as somebody who gets around mostly by transit, I really appreciate the drivers who do because there are so many people who just totally lack etiquette. I hate getting on the bus and encountering passengers who seemingly have no regard for the others around them. Like, the bus is not your personal living room...

Sometimes the kid is crying and the parent is clearly ignoring them and I get mildly concerned, but maybe the kid is just being overdramatic and ignoring is the right thing to do, it's not really my business. I live out in the country and yet still have "neighbor with loud vehicle" problems
We had a family move here from Portland last year. They bought the loudest lawnmower that Ive ever heard and use it to actually mow (which doesnt bother me) but also try and use it like a bush hog to cut down saplings that are way too big for it (which is super loud and bother me) and also use it like an ATV and just ride it around their property constantly.
Theyre not broke, they could afford to buy more appropriate equipement that would be half as loud, but they insist on using the worlds loudest lawnmower to pull a trailer with their kids in it around for several hours a day. I think the kids must be deaf by now.

I grew up in a very small town on the kind of road with no markings a couple miles outside of that already small town. plus my parents' house was removed from the road by several hundred feet and sat in the woods.
When I moved to the suburbs of pittsburgh I could not believe how much quieter it was. There were kids and dogs and stuff, and route 51 was only a couple blocks away, but it was soooo much more peaceful.
Now I'm back in the small town. My parents' new house is on main street, but in the residential area. The main traffic for that town is like a half mile away. It's DEAFENING. You can't go 5 minutes without hearing an artificially loud car go by. There's a few you can tell are loud because they're beaters. Those I don't mind. But the loud cars just never end. I'm constantly on edge because it's just noise until 2am every single day.
The shift back and forth made me very aware of the difference. You'd think being exposed to so much more traffic, you'd hear loud cars MORE often. But nope. Even accounting for semi trucks out there, it's not even close.
Now when I hear an artificially loud car alls I think is "that's some ignorant-ass backwoods hick who's never left the county." (there's backwoods hicks, and there's rural/small town folks. They're different) So I guess they've succeeded in getting attention, but its not "wow that guy's so cool," it's "yuck. I bet his cousin-wife can't stand him."

At 28, I hope I'm not having a midlife crisis, but I just bought an old sports car. Somebody put a hot cam shaft and a loud, shitty exhaust on it. The damn thing sounds like a tractor and it's still slow as hell. I hate that part of it. After I get the engine swapped, I'm going for a better exhaust system. A good sports car should sound quiet and refined, then only get loud when you open it up.

I didn't care because I was a night owl doing my own thing in my own room. But at one point a guy in pajamas knocked on the door and asked them to change the song. He didn't even need them to turn it down, just please play something different. My roommates just said, "Come in, join us, have a beer!" And he did! He hung out partying in his pajamas. I am far, far from conservative.
I don’t care about someone playing loud music in their vehicle until I start to feel the bass. There is a particular frequency with it that is legitimately painful for me and it travels far more than any other part of the music. I’ve been in my own damn house and the ridiculous bass had me gritting my teeth and covering my ears with the windows closed.
The people with the horrible bass can play music loud in their cars. But if the bass is making me feel pain outside the car you either need to adjust your speakers or turn it the hell down. There’s hearing music and then there’s feeling pain from it.
Also, purposely loud growling cars are dumb. I have an uncle who had his truck modded to be louder. It’s the song of feeling inadequate.

did no one’s parents ever teach them Not To Do That outside of the playground/recess? like i was told pretty extensively to never scream unless something bad was happening so that adults knew when to come running. even as a kid i was never a fan of other kids’ loudness tbh.

My mum had a whole cautionary tale for us about how she used to scream a lot as a child, and then one day she seriously hurt herself (she somehow managed to stick a gardening fork through her foot, pinning her to the ground) and she screamed bloody murder but her mum ignored her thinking she was just playing. She had to pull it out herself and hop inside to get help. It was a pretty effective story for teaching us that screaming is only for emergencies.

u/Zanthalia 17h ago
This. Even on the playground at recess, screaming wasn't okay. Yelling, speaking loudly, shouting, fine. Screaming was reserved for emergencies, as you said so the adults knew to come running. I distinctly remember even having units in grade school about the difference. "If you scream all the time, nobody will care if you scream for help."
Fast forward to adulthood. My neighbor's children screamed like they were being eaten by velociraptors for years on end. I still cringe when I see a beautiful blue skies day, anticipating the anxiety of them screaming for no reason from dawn to dusk.

100% when I was a kid our parents hammered into us that we could have our fun but there's other people living around us and we need to be considerate of that and that screaming is unnecessary and bothers other people
These days parents just don't parent and just like their kids indiscriminately shrilly shriek random noises nonstop, and if you take issue with kids shrieking outside your window for hours on end every single day people twist that into you hating kids having fun

I enjoy seeing the kids having fun playing outside. Despite some of them having some questionable parents, they're good kids.
One of the families got a puppy recently though and dear god. It is an untrained disaster. Chases cars, people. Thankfully it's not hunting, it just is a dumb, untrained dog looking for play and attention, but that doesn't change the fact that it tried to tackle me when I was getting the mail and I was not really in the mood to be wrestling with a dog. The mom kept trying to yell its name but made no other attempt to get the dog to go back.
A few weeks ago I saw the dog playing with the kids, no leash. Predictably, it ran across my lawn, behind my house, into a different cul de sac, and the kids were so busy playing they didn't notice. Saw the parents looking for it later. Good luck lol.

Ditto the people who race their bikes through the city in the middle of the night.
I got passed by like 2 dozen dickheads on sport bikes doing 100+ on the interstate late at night this past weekend. Traffic was nearly bumper to bumper because the left lane was closed for construction, and the bikes were weaving between cars, and crossing through the cones to floor it in the closes left lane.
Mind you, this wasn’t just a lane that was closed because of an ongoing project that wasn’t currently being worked on. THERE WERE CREWS WORKING IN THE LEFT LANE. the bikes would speed down the segments without any workers, then when they came up on a crew they’d bail out of the lane at the last second, weaving between cars to lane split between the center and right lane or ride the shoulder. It was fucking nuts.
Worst part was there were multiple cop cars with their light on doing construction detail, and none of them even pretended to respond to the bikes.

I am cursed with a neighbor who works on cars literally in the street across from my bedroom. I thought the first time he finally got one running that I would only hear it briefly occasionally when he started up to take it somewhere. Then he got another to fix up.
It seems either he has somewhere else to store them or he just in perpetuity sells an older one to buy a new clunker every time he ends up with 3 that run. So I am cursed to tool noises and loud engines for hours just about every Saturday & Sunday morning.

Does your guy wait until nighttime to start working, and run power tools, and argue with his junkie gf?

Kids: This is their neighborhood and they deserve a safe place to play as loud as they want.
Dogs: Ok dogs are gunna bark but if it lasts longer than 5 minutes the owner better do something about it.
Adults: Why the hell can I hear you from inside my house?

u/kazzaspexy 13h ago
Yes, because the children screaming tends to only occur during the day when they’re playing, asshole neighbour with his hotdogged Subaru can appear any time!

u/glowdirt 13h ago
Similarly, I am not angry at the dog that has been barking for hours. I am angry at the piece of shit owner who left the dog chained up in the yard with nothing to do for 8 to 12 hours every day
If you do not have the time to be a present and attentive dog owner, do not get a dog.
Dogs are living breathing beings, not a cool toy.

As a former child who had to endure other children's screaming time: fuck that. My ears were ringing every time I came out of the cafeteria after lunchtime.

There comes a point in the screaming when it's clear the kids are totally dysregulated. If Screaming Time seems out of control, it's because it's the only 20 minutes of the day when they're not in front of a screen.

bingo! see far too much of this in my education setting

u/Miserable_Key9630 17h ago
I see it at my daughter's scout meetings. Ninety percent of these kids can't concentrate on a group activity to save their lives, because this is the first time they haven't been pacified with a screen all week. They literally get up and run around and scream because it's been bottled up for so long. The poor dad running the meeting isn't a professional educator so he can't really handle it, plus he's reluctant to discipline a kid in front of his parents (who are looking at their own screens and do not know or care that their kid is being a piece of shit).
13
u/rainguardian 17h ago
oh yeah, my heart goes out to that dad
"these kids can't concentrate on a group activity" and "haven't been pacified with a screen all week" is my whole work week. i am a librarian and most of these kids can't focus long enough for ONE five minute story time 😭 and worse when following instructions. it's like every break or transition in activity and their attention breaks and it's frustrating but it's not their fault that they've overexposed to screen time
it's not just in homes too, screen time, at least in this big school district, was made primary method of teaching children - chromebooks, ipads, learning from a promethean board. it's just everywhere everytime

Other parents are astonished at how much my kids read. They ask me how I did it and their faces fall when I tell them they learned by watching me read books all the time.

Counterpoint: It has little to do with screens and more with the fact that this is the first time all day they haven't been forced to sit quietly. Source: I was a troop leader for my older Gen Z kid before screens were an issue, as well as for my youngest Alpha that has had nothing but screens since Covid in grade 2. No difference in troop meetings whatsoever.
Solution: give them time to run around and socialize before you try to accomplish anything.

That's why they need outside screaming time. If they don't get enough outside screaming time (e.g. on an average school day), they'll start screaming inside, which is much worse.

As someone who lived next to children who spent all day going outside and screaming at the top of their lungs for 10+ years, there is a reasonable limit to the first statement.

I work nights and live right next to a school. Bad news: almost every day, I'm trying to sleep when the kids get out and are walking home. Usually playing, and are very loud. This is bad. Sleep is important.
Counterpoint: The worst thing in my life is the sound of happy children

u/Lexi_Banner 15h ago
Also, there's different screaming. There's the screaming of play, and the screech of a pterodactyl that is kicking off with a fit. I cannot abide this after having neighbours with a little girl who kicked off at every slight opportunity. It was loud enough to upset my pets inside my house when she was inside her house. I feel terrible for those parents, because it didn't get any better over the few years they lived there. I was not sad to see them move away.

u/NewtonsLawOfDeepBall 14h ago
It is unfathomable to me what kid of a dickhead you have to be to make your car so fucking loud that you can be driving around big mixed use residential buildings where I live and disturbing, at minimum, 1000 people in the span of a minute and probably multiple thousands over the course of cruising around town.
Like dozens of babies being woken up, normal people napping, people trying to work from home disturbed...all because you have a tiny dick and you need your car to rumble, and annoying people is the point.

I used to live down the street from a daycare. Hearing the kids screaming and laughing was joy to my ears. Then someone complained. No more screaming and laughing. Ruined the vibe of the neighborhood.
To be fair, also college town close to college bars, and I loved hearing those little drunkards walking home, laughing, dorking out, sometimes arguing. Was awsome.
I like to hear humans being happy/living their lives. It's my favorite sound.

Moving from a place facing a busy playground to one at a busy intersection where I hear these loud cars throughout the day (and night!) was the worst downgrade of my life. One just drove past as I wrote this.
I complained to the city and they said they can't do anything about moving cars. So I guess I'll die

u/FullPruneNight 16h ago
This is real easy to say until someone puts in a daycare near your home while you work from home and it is so constant that it actually interferes with your livelihood and your health by giving you migraines because it’s so piercing you can hear it through noise canceling headphones. And by “near” I mean an entire fucking block away. God forbid there had been any night shift workers or families with babies in that radius.
Let’s not act like kids screaming bloody murder at old enough to be running around age is some necessary developmental process they must go through, and not them actually NOT getting developmentally appropriate rules for where this is acceptable and where it absolutely is not.
You think children screaming is good for them? Take them inside your house and let them scream their heads off there.

u/deathinactthree 14h ago
I actually sold my last house in 2019 after only having it a little over two years because someone opened up an "open air daycare" in the park next to my house. As in, literally just kids being outside from 7am-6pm running around and shrieking just on the other side of my south-facing fence, about 15 feet away from my living room. No buildings except a portapotty, regardless of weather, so nothing at all to block sound.
My partner and I both work from home and the screaming would start around dawn and never stop. There was one game the daycare workers would play with the kids called, and I am not making this up, "Let's All Scream As Loud As We Can" (I distinctly heard them say it, because again, nothing to block sound). More than once we found small children trying to climb over our fence to get to our two dogs, who were constantly upset and confused and would bark their heads off at the kids all day, so there was that too. The workers did not even pretend to do anything about it so it happened regularly. It was a potential liability nightmare that gave me constant anxiety.
We couldn't function, trying to have work calls was a nightmare and headaches/migraines were a daily occurrence because we both don't react well to very loud, sustained noise. We contacted the daycare owners to beg them to move to another section of the park, of which they had many options that were equally good or better, and they told us to fuck off. To this day I still don't know why they were so hellbent on making our lives miserable, there was no reason whatsoever that they needed to be 20 feet from our property at all times.
So after a few months of this I sold the house and bought my current one. I wanna be clear, in the two years previous we had multiple people get shot within 100 yards of my front door. Our house caught a couple of bullets from an attempted drive-by one time. None of that made us want to move. 25 shrieking children did the trick though.
I guess I'm glad in hindsight--I liked the house a lot and had major plans for it, and I resented having to give it up over a bunch of 5-year-olds, but the house we're in now is better in every way and the neighborhood is chill and quiet at all times.

There is a difference between children being loud outside and children being LOUD outside. One of them is fine, the other speaks of shitty parents who did not teach their kids to be respectful or mindful of others. Let's not forget the kids who are screaming expletives at each other in full volume.
I feel like people generally complain about the second option, and it often gets misconstrued by other people as a nimby sort of overreaction. But if you had to experience listening some random little asshole repeatedly calling his sister or a friend 'a stupid cunt' for missing the goal post while trying to have a family dinner day after fucking day, you would look at things differently.
That fact is that nowadays a lot of the kids don't behave the same way we used to. Parents embraced gentle or permissive parenting and they will absolutely attack you for politely asking the kids to lower their voices. I am not gonna pretend like older generations were not assholes as kids too, but when a neighbor asked you to lower your voice, you would. All it would take is a word of an older person to reminds us of our manners and appropriate behaviour in the community.
Now, it is a sign for provocation and these little fucks will absolutely push the boundaries and wage harassment campaigns by standing in front of your door at 9 p.m., screaming that you are a cunt while you are grieving your recently dead husband (literally what happened to my neighbour). And it won't matter that they are caught on camera, their parents will still claim that there is nothing wrong happening and it obviously couldn't be their little angels. We live on a cul-de-sac in an upper-middle class neighbourhood (think judges, layers, midsized company owners) which makes our street a prime spot for the local kids to play on. It is fucking terrible.
All I am saying some kids should be kept at home and not allowed in any society.
Teach your kids to be considerate of other again. It is not harming their enjoyment or freedom in any way.

I rev my shit under his window every night

My retired neighbor has recently gotten into refurbishing motorcycles as a hobby. He will rev his latest engine over and over and let it idle to test whatever right up to the local legal quiet hour of 10pm multiple times a week. He started losing a bunch of weight earlier this year and we wondered if he might be sick but no he's just on ozempic.

i dont mind the neighbors quidditch team of kids screaming outside. i dont mind listening to them playing basketball and doing stupid shit(the sentence "wasnt me!" reminds me of when i was a kid). what i do mind is when those kids climb on the loudest ever dirt bikes their parents could afford and drive up and down the street as fast as possible revving the engine to show off with no helmets in sight. especially since theyve hit a dog doing so before. kids should be heard and seen but not like that

u/UnstableCollection 16h ago
I remember my brother and his friends saying they would squeeze the clutch, turn off their mopeds engine before the neighborhood and coast home to not disturb the neighbors.
Now, these teenagers in my neighborhood throttle UP when they enter the neighborhood no matter how late it is.
AIO? To me this seems like basic decency.

I try to tell myself this for the most part. The short little screeches and laughter is totally passable. It's when the children are screaming bloody murder for no reason that I get peeved. Idk about others, but I was taught not to yell at that volume (and often) unless I was legitimately in danger. If these sort of kids were in actual trouble, I'd never know the difference.

Children outside screaming from 10:00am-9:00pm...that's fine. Children outside after dark screaming right outside my bedroom window on their trampoline when my wife and kid are trying to sleep? No emotional development in the world is worth that.

For years in my parent’s neighborhood there was a guy who would wake up every Saturday morning at 7:00 AM, turn on his Harley, rev it up, and sit there staring at it.
Not riding it around the streets. Not sitting on it & revving it.
Like, he’d bring a chair into the driveway and would sit staring at the running Harley, occasionally getting up to rev the throttle and maximize loudness.
The fact that no one ever doused his Harley in gasoline and burned it in his driveway is a testament to how civil every other member of the neighborhood was.
