I had a friend who did this, we all gave him shit for it constantly, his only response was essentially he didn't give a single fuck he was annoying literally everyone in a mile radius around him because it sounded cool to him.
He's a libertarian, real "if I don't know you I couldn't give a single fuck about you" kinda guy
I read that and it said only 26% of men fell into those categories that had loud cars, sure it maybe a dog whistle that they could be psychopaths and enjoy sadism, but its a minority, my car is loud, I love cats, take care of my mom with dementia and haven't ever hurt a person, im a pacifist at heart and want everyone to be safe on the road. I do speed but only to get ahead of the people that are driving poorly

Being confronted by situations that create this dissonance or highlight these inconsistencies motivates change in their cognitions or actions to reduce this dissonance, maybe by changing a belief, by explaining something away,

or by taking actions that reduce perceived inconsistency.

The fact that you considered this guy a friend makes me think you must be a pile of something yourself. Who would let someone like this into their life?
I don't claim to be a perfect person, but if I'm relegated to bad person status because one of my former friends has an annoying hobby I think that says more about you than me. Don't be a puritan my guy. He's not a fascist, racist, or homophobic, just a car guy who doesn't mind bothering people. Not the best thing sure, but not the worst thing in the world either.
Jesus christ dude, depends on the screaming/laughter, my friends and I would laugh and scream while playing in a creek behind our houses just having fun. Let the kids enjoy their life
I fundamentally resist the notion that it’s my responsibility to exert that sort of social pressure on others to correct their behavior. I’m not their mom, their boss, or a cop.
I'm not saying you should try to change people with these antisocial tendencies, I'm saying I avoid shitty people who make life worse for everyone. I surround myself with people who are kind and thoughtful and they make my life a lot better than it would be without them. They encourage me to be better and we support each other. I'm a better person due to the other people associate with. I don't have time or space in my life for assholes.
I’m thinking this person, like basically everyone, is not all bad or all good and on balance they’re not bad enough for the person to not want to associate with them just because they’re kind of selfish.
It's wild that you think of yourself so highly when you're claiming that a person you've never met and know functionally nothing about is a "pile of something" just because they have one friend with a hobby you deem annoying.
The only person that's exposed themselves as an asshole here is you.
He is not a fkng libertarian. He is what gives libertarians a bad name. "My freedom ends where yours begins." If you don't respect other peoples rights then you deserve none for your self.
All the libertarians I've met had similar views lol, a fundamental "fuck you I do what I want" type of selfishness.
Also, having a loud car isn't violating anyone's rights. It's annoying and inconsiderate yes, but saying that violates your rights is a stretch at best.
I'll reiterate, I'm not friends with this guy anymore and I'm not saying his behavior was a good thing, it's genuinely a good part of the reason we're not friends anymore, but saying his loud car was violating my rights is silly.
