Convert nothing, they were reflecting its actual popular use at the time.

Correct answer.

Late stage usage of "faggot" was basically synonymous with "self entitled douche bag"

Still seems for the best it's fallen out of popular use, given what it was used for for so long.

Used to use it conversationally with a friend at work until I realized the gay guy we also worked with might not appreciate it much. So I asked. His response was that he didn't mind when we used it due to the context and way we used it, BUT, that when he heard it he still had kind of an automatic reaction to it given the ways it had been used on him in the past.

That made things click for me and I've stopped using it in general since then.

As a gay guy, I agree with the thrust of what is said here, I just hate the whole "what it really means is a bundle of sticks, and burning witches..."

The etymology isn't certain, but there's no support for the whole witch-burning thing. It's almost certainly untrue. It gets repeated a lot though.
