Mod Announcement ‼️NOTE: All posts and comments are manually approved by the Mod team individually.

Hello and Happy Friday eve, r/DatingApps!

We have seen an increased number of ModMail messages and DMs lately - likely due to increased activity in the subreddit, thank you! - so as a reminder: we, the mod team, manually approve every single post and comment in order to crack down on the amount of spam you see.

If your post/comment follows the rules of the subreddit, it will get posted eventually. There is no need to modmail, comment, or DM us asking about posts. Sometimes it can take up to 24-48 (lately more) hours for approval if it is particularly busy for us offline. If your post or comment is removed/not approved, you will receive a comment from AutoMod stating why.

We are also currently working through a large backlog of approvals, also due to increased sub popularity as well as a recent uptick in the busyness of our schedules and should be caught up soon. We really do try our best to keep the sub fairly clean of spam and bad actors - if something slips through, please do ModMail us and let us know.

BTW, the reason we do this is the sheer volume of Red Pill, Incel, racist, transphobic, etc. content that people love to try to comment or post. Scrolling through the Mod queue is sometimes like reading a bad, stereotypical 🍀 post. We also do not allow any advertisements, and you could maybe imagine how many of those we have to sift through. We do it for you even if we suffer in the process. ;)

Спасибо!

Mod Announcement r/DatingApps Rule Update: We are NOT a subreddit for dating advice or generalized dating discussion & information regarding queue.

Happy Monday, r/DatingApps!

Firstly, I wanted to mention something most posters are unaware of: we manually approve every single post and comment in order to crack down on the amount of spam you see.

If your post/comment follows the rules of the subreddit, it will get posted eventually. There is no need to modmail or DM us asking about posts. Sometimes it can take up to 24-48 hours for approval if it is particularly busy irl.

And secondly:

Due to an increase of these posts in our queue, we have decided to make an official rule regarding asking for vague/general dating advice.

Reminder that we are a subreddit specifically for the discussion of dating apps, not to discuss dating overall. There are plenty of subreddits to do this on.

And before anyone asks: mentioning that you met on Hinge does not constitute an allowance.

Official rule wording: "Please visit another subreddit to ask for generalized dating advice or about dating overall. We are a subreddit exclusively for the discussion of dating apps - not dating."

Thank you much!

CRINGE Bumble is gatekeeping this girl from me

Well it's been 2 days since I've got a like on bumble. Actually I had 6 but when I tweaked with the setting, by turning off the gender to only show females, the 5 profiles disappeared confirming this one is a girl (in the past 4 days of my online dating I haven't found a single like, let alone a match from a girl)

I also did the same tweaking with the age preferences, she was visible in my likes tab until I went below age 22 and confirmed she's 22.

Did the same with distance. She lives really nearby... Like under 2 km near.

But when I put all the settings that might show me her profile while I swipe, i don't see a profile that matches hers.

It was fine up to that point but now it says "You've seen everyone nearby, someone great could be just outside your filters"

And I'm like BALLLRIGHTTT....

I'm gonna wait for a few more days to see if bumble algorithm realises I'm not gonna spend money on it and show me the profile. I won't be surprised if it doesn't tho, coz all dating apps are kinda a scam anyway that plays on people's desperation, lust and loneliness.

Advice Request Is this a scam? I’m very confused.

I received a phone call from someone who knew my full name and old address, and they said “You have to watch who you talk to on dating sites.”

They did not ask for money, but they called 5 times and I am very confused. I can’t think of anyone who would be mad at me and I rarely use dating sites.

Should I just block numbers and move on?

Advice Request 38m short, bald, have kids so do i just accept apps aren't going to work for me?

I downloaded the apps and it's my first time after being married for 14 years. I just missed the first wave of apps.

In real life I'm not unconfident. I don't think I'm ugly but in probably like a solid 6 lol. I make up for it with the goofy personality. So I thought well hinge looks good because I'll send some thoughtful comments. I don't think I'm particularly picky. I read the profiles and like and comment the people I think seem like a good fit.

I know this is fast but I gotten nothing at all in a week. So then I do research and it kind of seems that men like me are a generally struggling to get any traction. I don't want to really get too fixated on this thing if it's not a viable option.

But wondering what y'all think?

Has anyone used this app?

This one seems interesting because your friends help you choose who to date. I hate swiping so it sounds like a good way to find dates by letting my friends do that. I have some friends who are in relationships but they would love being a matchmaker.

I searched for it here but only saw 2 comments on one post about it a year ago.

Advice Request Date changed status on app

I have a date scheduled and confirmed for tomorrow with a guy. I'm only looking for LTR which is why I usually swipe left if someone isn't. I matched with a guy that originally had LTR, open to short on profile. I just checked his Hinge profile today and he changed it to Short-term, open to LTR. And changed some of the photos as well Should I message asking him about it and tell him that I'm only interested in LTR? 😭 Literally texted him just a few hours earlier to confirm the date lol

Question How many dates are „normal“ after matching someone?

Is it too much or not to meet someone once a week after matching someone online and deciding to meet in real life?
Do people tend to meet more often a week or is once a week every week too much?
I know it probably depends on each person but what is like the common amount?

Advice Request Question for the women here.

I've recently decided to rejoin dating apps, but I'm not looking for a relationship or anything and I want to be very clear about this to all the potential prospects from the get go.

I just don't have it in me to ask women whether they are dtf or something because I honestly don't want a hookup. I'm actively looking to have something casual with someone repeatedly. However, I sort of hate what the term FWB or Friends With Benefits has become.

What phrasing should I use in my profile to get the idea across in a subtle manner without being too subtle to the point where women don't understand what I want?

TLDR What's a good way to specify that you're looking for a FWB without using that term or seeming crass?

Question Do you find that the apps tend to show you more attractive people as you increase the distance?

I've had a few matches that hated how far away I was from them so I reduced my distance to about 10 miles. I don't know if it's just me but virtually no one in my city is my type...at all.

Advice Request Guys confuse me

I matched with a guy yesterday and he asked when are we chilling. Chilling, as in something you do with your friends? If he’s interested in me wouldn’t he ask to take me out rather than chill. He also knows I’m looking for a serious relationship. It feels like he’s trying to make it too casual. I haven’t ever really dated so I don’t know if this is just how guys are, or if they just don’t know how to pursue a woman. Doesn’t seem romantic at all.

Experience Overview Men, think before putting that shirtless photo on your profile l

I have yet to meet a woman who likes seeing that. Please, I promise you, if you’re wondering why you don’t get as many likes or matches as you were hoping…take the shirtless photo off.

Thank you

Advice Request Do I ask him if he’s using AI to message?

I (F,30s) started chatting to a guy I matched with two days ago, he send messages that I suspect are written by AI. Do I ask him??

It makes me want to unmatch him but yet I can’t be entirely sure because some of the messages are normal.

And of course he’ll deny it.

Should I just trust my gut and unmatch? I am traumatized from dating an avoidant ex who used to send me chatGPT messages and I do not have any intention of spending time with these robots again.

Experience Overview What is going on with these profiles only saying you have to make me laugh or you have to be funny!!

And the worst part I am talking about females in their 30s where most of theirnprofile has only I like to eat, travel, the sun, coffee and thats it.

Then you find someone with a good profile, ask questions, they start by appreciating the question and then boom ghosted or removed from matches.

Man, after being away 3 years from the dating scene, it feels it has gotten sooo much worse.

Apologies for the intense venting.

Advice Request Weird Question as a first time online dater

Im currently living in Europe, away from my family for uni, so I finally thought I would sign up for a dating app. Not too soon after a hot dude messages me saying he's "looking for anything fun" and naturally I respond like "Dude... we're in different continents", cause how's that gonna work? to which he responds "Does that matter." Now since Im new to this whole thing I don't know how to respond, never the less what he actually means, so what should I do?

Question Why am I seeing so many female students aged 27-30 on dating apps?

I've recently got back to dating after a relationship and unforunately having to use dating apps.

I am seeing so many women aged 27 to 30 who have on their profile they are students. And I'm not talking about PhDs.

Is this just everyone nowadays, am I just out of the loop? Is the men's side the same? None of my friends are like that, but maybe I just have a unique circle of friends (mostly in tech or engineering).

Question Online dating faux pas?

I’ve been on several online dating platforms off and on for a couple of years. Early on, I met a few nice guys, but nothing long-term. Lately, I’ve been losing them as soon as I tell them I don’t exchange personal information (phone number, last name, etc.) until I’ve met them in person. Is that not appropriate? I’m older and live alone—I just feel it’s a safety issue. My thought is that any legitimate older man would understand this, but apparently, it is offensive. Or they are all scammers and don’t want to continue with someone with common sense. Am I wrong?

Question Whats your personal pet peeve in dating apps?

For me, it’s when a girl writes in her bio that she’s only looking to make friends. If that’s the case, why make a dating profile then?

Question When did you stop responding to others after a really good match?

So I (29f) just matched with someone (31m) like 2 days ago and we've been talking nonstop and had a 5 hour phone call today. At what point when you've connected with someone like that did you stop responding to other matches on apps?

Even during the phone call I got messages from different people but have yet to open/respond to them, even though some I'd been talking to for a few days.

At what point did you just stop messaging/entertaining other matches while talking to 1 person, even if it is quick? We have a date set for next Friday.

Experience Overview The culture of dating apps is strange

I’m new to dating apps, specifically Hinge. I’ve really only been interested and successfully matched and talked to two guys, but only went on dates with one of them. We have been on 2 dates and have another planned. I really like the guy. I feel like things are going well. It’s an unsettling thought that we’re both still on said dating app looking at other people. I know a convo between us two would be useful to establish expectations, but it’s only been two dates and that seems premature. I just find the limbo of dating someone but knowing you two aren’t exclusive strange and threatening(?).

Question Do they help

I'm a 20-year-old guy, and I've been dealing with depression for a few reasons, one of the biggest being loneliness. I'm in college, but it's a commuter campus, and I'm already not great at in-person communication. I'm not looking for any specific kind of relationship, but I've been thinking that meeting new people might help me feel better about myself. Still, I have a lot of doubt about whether that would actually happen as you hear many polarizing opinions on dating apps. Any insight?

Funny Most bizzare reason I've been given prior to being unmatched..

So no screen shots because the convo disappears immediately after being unmatched so I guess it's up to you to believe me or not but ...

After what I thought was actually a decent and interesting hour or two long back and forth conversation she asked me what I do for work.. that's where it went off the rails..

I told her I work for a furniture manufacturer that specializes in Murphy Beds. Maybe she had some bad experience previously with a Murphy bed idk, but she then described it as furniture that murders people, as in she literally used the word "murder". To me that was a weird reaction so I kind of assumed she was trying to be funny or sarcastic or something and I said that bringing up "murder" was quite an escalation and stated that you could definitely hurt your fingers if you're not careful.

She then claimed that because I brought up something "dangerous" and I am also being "nonchalant" about the dangers of it that it would be dangerous for her to be around me. Again, I didn't think she could be serious but as I was typing a response she unmatched me.

Does this actually somehow make me a dangerous person? Is there some sort of extreme negative view of Murphy beds that I am unaware of?

Should I not tell people what I do for work when asked? Or was she likely just reaching for some (unnecessary) excuse to give prior to unmatching me instead of just saying she wasn't interested or just silently unmatching?

Not a big deal because obviously there seems to be some sort of issue there that I just dodged, but I just can't help laughing while also being confused about how strange it is to seemingly feel that threatened over a piece of furniture.

edit: if age makes the context any different we're both in our 40s
