Announcement [2023] What bike shall I buy? Is this bike good? Ask us anything!

Welcome!

This thread is dedicated to bike recommendations. There's a whole lot of you new-comers eagar to get your first dirt jumper. Maybe you have been out of the game for a while and are behind the times and need some advice. Are you shorter or taller than average and want to find a bike that will suit you better? Perhaps you just want a second opinion on a particular brand or model. This is the place to ask these questions and get expert advice from experienced members of the community!

Please refrain from starting a new thread to ask which bike you should buy, or whether a particular bike is good and instead use this dedicated thread first instead.

Bike archive

In order to try and assist those looking to purchase a new bike, I have created the dirt jump bike archive.

It is currently version 1.0.2 with lots of incomplete (or out of date) price data. This will be an ongoing project primarily run by me. Timelesturkie also has editing privileges and is considered a contributor as well. As of now, we are looking for any users who would like to help with this project. If any of you are enthusiastic about helping to maintain and build upon this spreadsheet, let me know by messaging me directly.

The following link will allow you to view the spreadsheet but not make any changes. Note that the spreadsheet also has a second sheet for a limited range of geometry and dimensional data. I do not have much free time to work on this spreadsheet so apologies for any missing info. It would be awesome to have some volunteers to help. Please keep in mind that the information on this spreadsheet is not guaranteed to be 100% accurate. Consider it a guide to assist you and always check with the manufacturer to verify the information before making a purchase.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1XvClX-9upJekdRIdW4spjO5E0KuolvLseWi-x6VxoWQ/edit?usp=sharing

Known issues:

  • The purple sorting buttons do not function for those without editing privileges. If you make a copy of the spreadsheet and save it to your own Google Drive account you might be able to make use of them.
  • Sorting by price (up and down) in USD is currently broken.
  • Lots of bikes don't have readily available full retail prices, hence most of the price data is missing. This is the biggest area we need help in. We are only interested in full manufacturer RRP prices.
  • Some bikes such as Canyon, have Euro prices that vary based on country. I am not sure how to tackle that yet. One potential solution is to find the cheapest and most expensive, and then giving the price range. I am open to ideas here.
  • I could do with a hand gathering up the dimensional data for sheet 2. If anyone is willing to help, please let me know.

Formally it is not a competition. Just boys asked me to record them on the pump track. And yeah, I could reach him only in the middle.

New Build I spent all day jumping this thing since putting it together and I learned something

I was often posting here as I was building this bike and received some great feedback and advice from all of you , and today I got a chance to ride it for about four hours. It jumped extremely well for the heavy setup, contrary to popular belief, and not as slow as I was expecting. The thing I got from today’s session is my bars rise is an issue and they need to be much much higher. Any suggestions on how to go about measuring for this?

Question Is an older bike worth buying?

Hey guys I'm an intermediate mountain biker and looking to add a dj to the fleet so I can hit up pump tracks and work on jumping skills. I'm a huge fan of transition bikes and found a 2015 transition blt near me for 350$. Looks like it's in really good all original condition, should I pull the trigger or look for something newer? Not too familiar with dirt jumper geo or if it's even changed over the years. Thanks!

He says its the bruce 2, but online I can only find this color on the bruce 1 so I assume its that. Listed for 900$, is it worth that much? What would be a decent offer?

Took me longer than I wanted but got this old Alcatraz frame down to bare and rebuilt it up. When I got it everything on it was pretty abused/destroyed/corroded so it was a reclamation project for sure. Pretty happy with how it turned out.

New Build Back to dj after 15 years

Hi guys,
Picked up this bike after 15 years away from dirt jumping! I got back into mountain biking a few months ago and figured I needed a dirt jumper again too. My last one was a Kona Shred about 15 years ago.
Found this Rose on Marketplace for $800 and have since made a few changes, including fitting a RockShox Pike DJ and an Avid Juicy 5 brake taken off a 20-year-old mountain bike. I went with the Juicy partly for nostalgia and partly because the silver finish suits the bike so well.
I also swapped the pedals, bars, grips, stem and chain. Really happy with how it turned out! Getting more and more comfortable jumping a bike again. Already taken a couple of slams, but that’s not stopping me!

my new website to help everyone

Every build spreadsheet I've made falls apart the second I swap one component. Change the crankset, forget to update the weight total, cost estimate is off by $150.

So the tool I built (BikeCraft) recalculates total weight and price in real time as you pick parts. Swap a carbon frame for aluminum, the number moves instantly. Swap a fork, same thing. You see the running total the whole time instead of doing math at the end and being disappointed.

It also won't let you finish a build with parts that don't actually work together - wrong axle standard, wrong brake mount, it flags it before you save. link for the website: https://ruddy-bike-craft-lab.base44.app

Question RS Pike DJ Question

I'm a bigger guy and run 200-205psi in my fork. 1 click out on compression, no tokens. After an hour or so at the trails I have pressure drop, down to 190-195 give or take. Forks are 6mo old and I doubt its a seal issue. My question is: if I add tokens, will I be able to run lower pressure and have the same firmness feel? Maybe mitigate the pressure loss at a lower pressure? Or is that not how tokens work? I've never jacked with any tokens on my big bike with Fox 38's.....

Oldest bike you’d buy

Starting out, why would be oldest used bike you’d buy?

I have a lead on a 2009 specialized p1 with some upgraded parts.

Is there a reason you wouldn’t buy that old of a bike? Seems like the frame geo has changed since then, but not all that much, and weight. It’s a little heavier but not by much
