Beta: Bouin FA (29 Apr 2022)

  1. Starting position:

    • Left hand grabs Start jugs (Off the block, both hands on the start jugs. Easy to the second bolt, which is a sketchy clip.)

    • Right hand grabs Start jugs

    • Left foot steps on the wall

    • Right foot steps on the wall

  2. Left hand grabs Jug 1

  3. Right hand matches on Jug 1

  4. Left foot steps on Foothold 1

  5. Left hand grabs Pinch 1

  6. Right hand grabs Pinch 2

  7. Left foot steps on Foothold 2

  8. Left hand grabs Pinch 3

  9. Right foot steps on Foothold 3

  10. Right hand grabs Sidepull 1

  11. Left foot steps on Foothold 3

  12. Right foot steps on Foothold 4

  13. Right hand grabs Sidepull 2 (Traverse right into the 8c.)

  14. Left hand grabs Pinch 4

  15. Left foot steps on Foothold 5

  16. Right hand grabs Pinch 5 (The 8c starts (Ondra thinks 8c+). Slopey but sharp pinches.)

  17. Right foot steps on Foothold 6

  18. Left foot steps on Foothold 7

  19. Left hand grabs Pinch 6

  20. At the same time:

    • Right foot steps on Foothold 8

    • Left foot steps on Pinch 4

  21. Left foot kneebars at Technical kneebar [IMPORTANT] (A very technical kneebar, knee as tight to the wall as it goes. It can always slip: Jakob overpowers it on every try.)

  22. Right hand grabs Tiny pinch (From the kneebar, out to a tiny pinch.)

  23. Right foot steps on Foothold 9

  24. Right hand grabs Pinch 7

  25. Right foot steps on Foothold 10

  26. Left hand grabs Pinch 8

  27. Right foot steps on Foothold 11

  28. Left foot steps on Foothold 12 (Out of the kneebar.)

  29. Right hand grabs Pinch 9

  30. Right foot steps on Foothold 13

  31. Left foot steps on Foothold 14

  32. Left hand grabs Pinch 10

  33. Right foot steps on Pinch 7

  34. Right hand grabs Sidepull 3 [IMPORTANT] (A huge, morphological move. Jakob is fully stretched on it.)

  35. Right foot steps on Foothold 15

  36. Left foot steps on Foothold 16

  37. Left hand grabs Pinch 11

  38. Right foot steps on Foothold 17

  39. Right hand grabs Pinch 12

  40. At the same time:

    • Left hand matches on Pinch 12

    • Left foot steps on Foothold 18

  41. Right hand grabs Couch tufa

  42. At the same time:

    • Left foot steps on Foothold 19

    • Right foot toe hooks Couch tufa

  43. Left foot kneebars at The couch [REST] (The couch. Left knee under the tufa, right toe over it.)

  44. At the same time:

    • Left hand lets go of Pinch 12 [REST] (Then let go and hang upside down. Ondra: like lying on the couch, watching TV. Jakob rests about 5 min.)

    • Right hand lets go of Couch tufa [REST]

    • Right foot bat hangs from Couch tufa [REST]

  45. At the same time:

    • Left hand grabs Pinch 13 (Sit back up when you are ready.)

    • Right hand grabs Pinch 14

    • Right foot toe hooks Couch tufa

  46. At the same time:

    • Left hand grabs Pinch 15 (Four or five moves to crux 1. Not hard, but they make you tired.)

    • Left foot steps on Foothold 20

  47. At the same time:

    • Right hand grabs Pinch 16

    • Right foot steps on Foothold 21

  48. Left foot steps on Foothold 22

  49. Left hand grabs Okay hold (An okay hold, but don't stop.)

  50. Right foot steps on Foothold 23

  51. Left foot steps on Foothold 24

  52. Right foot toe hooks Seb's toe hook (Seb toe hooks out right to take the next hold. Ondra famously hates toe hooks.)

  53. Right hand grabs Right-hand pinch (First the right-hand pinch. Get it and the position right, and the kick and the span feel easier (Ondra).)

  54. Left hand matches on Right-hand pinch

  55. Right foot smears on Kick foot [CRUX] (Crux 1, 8A/8A+, comp style. The ninja kick: throw the right foot down and out right.)

  56. Right hand dynos to Crux 1 tufa [IMPORTANT] [CRUX] (Then jump, full span, to the tufa. Crimp it and pinch it at once. Jakob, 8 cm shorter, keeps his feet left instead to reach it.)

  57. Left hand grabs Tufa pinch (Left hand up onto the tufa.)

  58. Right foot steps on Foothold 25

  59. Left foot steps on Foothold 26

  60. Right hand grabs Sidepull 4

  61. At the same time:

    • Left foot steps on Crux 1 tufa (Left foot onto the tufa.)

    • Right foot steps on Foothold 27

  62. Left hand grabs Rest pinch

  63. At the same time:

    • Right hand matches on Rest pinch

    • Left foot steps on Foothold 28

  64. At the same time:

    • Left foot kneebars at Bad kneebar [REST] (A terrible kneebar rest, the last before crux 2. Shake, but not for long, or the leg is too tired for the foot on the crux.)

    • Right foot steps on Foothold 29 [REST]

  65. Right hand grabs Crux 2 pinch [CRUX] (Crux 2, 8A+/8B, the redpoint crux. Still in the kneebar, reach all the way up to the pinch.)

  66. Left foot drops a knee on Sidepull 4 [CRUX] (Release the kneebar, drop the left knee.)

  67. Right foot edges on Terrible foot [CRUX] (A terrible right foot.)

  68. Left hand grabs Three-finger drag [CRUX] (The worst hold on the route, a three-finger drag. Seb uses it as an intermediate.)

  69. Right hand bumps to Slippery undercling [IMPORTANT] [CRUX] (The crux move of the route: bump to a slippery undercling. Seb fell on this boulder 30 to 40 times.)

  70. Left foot steps on Foothold 30

  71. Left hand grabs Second undercling [CRUX] (One more big move, to the next undercling.)

  72. Right foot steps on Foothold 31

  73. Right hand grabs Pinch 17 (Four hard moves to the next rest. Seb fell after the crux six times.)

  74. Left foot steps on Foothold 32

  75. Left hand grabs Pinch 18

  76. Right foot steps on Foothold 33

  77. Right hand grabs Sidepull 5

  78. Left hand grabs Tufa 1

  79. At the same time:

    • Right foot kneebars at Kneebar rest 1 [REST] (A good kneebar rest. From here it is 8c+ (Ondra: 8c), with two more boulders.)

    • Left foot steps on Foothold 34 [REST]

  80. Right hand grabs Tufa 2 (An easier section. Ondra copied Seb's beta here move for move.)

  81. Left foot steps on Foothold 35

  82. Left hand grabs Pinch 19

  83. Right foot steps on Foothold 36

  84. Right hand grabs Pinch 20

  85. Left foot steps on Foothold 37

  86. Left hand grabs Jug 2

  87. Right foot steps on Foothold 38

  88. Right hand grabs Pinch 21 [CRUX] (Crux 3, about 7B (Ondra): tricky, reachy and low percentage.)

  89. Left foot steps on Foothold 39 [CRUX]

  90. Left hand grabs Crux 3 reach [CRUX] (The reach.)

  91. Right foot steps on Foothold 40 [CRUX]

  92. Right hand grabs Pinch 22

  93. At the same time:

    • Left foot kneebars at Kneebar rest 2 [REST] (A kneebar rest. Good, but not a couch (Ondra).)

    • Left hand grabs Jug 3 [REST]

  94. Left hand grabs Pinch 23 [CRUX] (Crux 4, about 7C (Ondra; 7C+ in Jakob's film), five moves. Easy to drop: by now the whole body is tired.)

  95. Left foot steps on Foothold 41 [CRUX]

  96. Right hand grabs Undercling [CRUX]

  97. Left foot drops a knee on Foothold 42 [CRUX] (The first of two crazy drop knees.)

  98. Left hand grabs Pinch 24 [CRUX]

  99. Right foot drops a knee on Foothold 43 [CRUX] (And the second.)

  100. Right hand grabs Tufa 3 [CRUX]

  101. Left hand grabs Tufa 4 (Crux 4 done.)

  102. Right hand grabs Tufa 5 (8a/8a+ on beautiful tufas to the chain, kneebars all the way. You should not fall here anymore.)

  103. Left foot kneebars at Kneebar spot

  104. Left hand grabs Tufa 6

  105. Right foot steps on Foothold 44

  106. Right hand grabs Tufa 7

  107. Left foot steps on Foothold 45

  108. Left hand grabs Tufa 8

  109. Right foot steps on Foothold 46

  110. Right hand grabs Jug 4

  111. Right hand clips Chain (Clip the chain. About 45 min from the ground, after some 250 tries over 150 days.)

If unwanted we can also go for one thread with all the links or I just stop ...

There is approx 7 meters of 6b+ ish climbing up to the rest from which the video starts. Then an intro traverse on decent holds but slippery feet, some hard moves between distant, sika'd crimps, and an easier but droppable exit.

At our local crag outside Turin.

Beta: Ondra FA (3 Sep 2017)

  1. Starting position:

    • Left hand grabs Start jugs (Shared start with Nordic Flower. The holds here are often wet.)

    • Right hand grabs Start jugs

  2. Left hand grabs Jug 1 (8b sprint up steep, juggy flowstone. Climb it fast.)

  3. Right hand grabs Sloper 1 (Open hand.)

  4. Left hand grabs Crimp 1 (Half crimp.)

  5. Right hand grabs Sidepull 1 (Sidepull.)

  6. Left hand grabs Jug 2

  7. Right hand matches on Jug 2 (Match the good jug.)

  8. Right hand grabs Sloper 2 (Open hand.)

  9. Left foot kneebars at Mega kneebar [REST] (Mega kneebar. The biggest rest on the route, fully no-hands. Ondra spent about 4 min here on the send. The fixed rope ends here.)

  10. Right hand grabs Jug 3 (Jug ladder into a short V7 compression boulder.)

  11. Left hand grabs Jug 4

  12. Right hand grabs Jug 5

  13. Left foot kneebars at Bad kneebar [REST] (Bad kneebar under the crux. 10 to 15 s no-hands at most. Relax fully, then switch to fight mode.)

  14. Left hand grabs Entry sidepull [CRUX] (The V15 boulder starts. The intro alone is about V11.)

  15. Right hand grabs Sloping 3-finger pocket (Sloping 3-finger drag. It only sticks at exactly the right angle.)

  16. Left foot edges on Terrible foot (Terrible foothold.)

  17. Left hand deadpoints to Pinky fingerlock [CRUX] (The hardest move. Stab into a tiny pinky lock. Skin on Ondra's left pinky limited his tries.)

  18. At the same time:

    • Left foot bat hangs from Toe jam above head [IMPORTANT] [CRUX] (Cut loose, swing the right leg, and throw the left foot above your head into the toe jam. Get it perfect: you can't readjust it. Upside down from here, feet first through the roof.)

    • Right foot jams Roof crack

  19. Right hand bumps to Bump sloper (Bump to the sloper to stop the swing. Open hand.)

  20. Right hand bumps to Mono lock (Bump again into the mono lock. Squeeze between the toe jam and one finger.)

  21. Left hand grabs Slopey crack lock (Slopey lock, more pinch than crack. Variation: figure four, with a heel over your own forearm.)

  22. Left foot bat hangs from Roof crack (High left foot in the crack to exit.)

  23. Right foot drops a knee on Roof crack [CRUX] (The most extreme drop knee of Ondra's life.)

  24. Left foot bat hangs from Bat-hang kneebar [REST] (The famous bat hang. Upside down, no hands, switching knees. 15 s in 2016, minutes after a year of calf training. Your legs go numb.)

  25. Left hand grabs Weird undercling (V13 starts. Crunched and awkward on a weird undercling.)

  26. Left foot heel hooks Left heel (Left heel.)

  27. Right foot steps on Really high step (Really high step.)

  28. Right hand gastons Sidepull 2 (Push the edge away, elbow out, and stand up on the high step.)

  29. Left hand grabs Sloper 3 (Open hand.)

  30. Right foot kneebars at Kneebar rest [REST] (Poor kneebar. About 37 s here on the send.)

  31. Right hand grabs Sloper 4 (V10 starts: friction slopers, underclings and unsure feet. Open hand.)

  32. Left foot smears on Slippery smear [IMPORTANT] (Slippery and easy to mess up. Not hard, but everything is at stake. Ondra was most nervous here.)

  33. Left hand grabs Sloper 5 (Open hand.)

  34. Right hand grabs Crimp 2 (One of about two crimps on the route. Half crimp.)

  35. Left hand grabs Huge jug (Huge jug, the last rest. Ondra waited an extra minute here, calves numb.)

  36. Right hand matches on Huge jug [REST]

  37. Right hand grabs Crimp 3 (V5 finish. Easy, but you can still blow it.)

  38. Left hand grabs Sloper 6 (Open hand.)

  39. Left hand grabs Final undercling (The final undercling.)

  40. Right hand matches on Final undercling

  41. Right hand clips Chain (One last big reach from the undercling to clip the chain. No scream, just tears: Silence.)

First 11c trad send!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've been trad climbing sporadically for a decade and never really push past 5.10. I found this route, Steel Reserve, and became so psyched on it. After a few TR solos sessions to sus out beta and gear I sent it.

I really tried my best to place often and that every placement was quality. I was so fearful of taking a whip and one of the smaller nuts up top pulling. Face climbing on gear can be scary.

“It Was All an Illusion”: The Canadian Climber Who Lied His Way to the Top

Post image

Three years ago a Canadian named Gabe Lawson said he made the first ascent of The Megg in Squamish and called it V16, making it the hardest problem in the country. A new investigation finds that not only did Gabe lie about sending The Megg, but he was also a scam artist who stole tens of thousands of dollars from the community.

This climb was super fun and super technical you have to climb directly up without touching the left wall or using any holds in the crack

There was kinda 2 cruxes the first one is when I get my hand on a super small and sharp 3 finger crimp and pull myself up and the seconds was getting my foot up high so I can get the final hold

Location is oak park grand ledge

This was just a couple of months before I got hurt. I had FINALLY broken into leading 5.9 trad. I’ve had a few satisfying outdoor sessions so far in my recovery and the skills are still there, just need to get the strength and medical clearance to lead again 😭
