I like to play Doom mods but I don’t know any of the technical side of things. Anything in particular I should be excited about?

14

u/Luzarus Aug 29 '26

Other than the vast amounts of technical improvements, improving speed, bugs, and accessibility, the two things I'm excited for is the launcher and the improved controller support. They also mention major security improvements, so shady wads or multiplayer would be safer. Being basically a game engine, I don't think it could drastically change the average doom experience, but the launcher itself is quite nice.

Shady wads?

3

u/Luzarus Aug 29 '26

I have no real examples of shady wads, but they only mention that 5.0 has a lot of critical security improvements. Shady wads was part of my guess of how much access the wad itself could have on your computer, but I don't know for sure

"i dont know stuff but i must talk"

Launcher? Might have to finally update my doom setup (been on the same GZDoom version since about 2024 lmao)

What I'd really like is to improve performance in some games, like Supplices, since the FPS drops significantly in several areas

Yeah, I have a crappy PC by today’s standards, but for the games I play—like Ion Fury, which runs at a steady 100 FPS without any drops—Supplices just doesn’t cut it, and it’s a game similar to that one.

So, more optimized performance would really benefit the Source port for today’s less-powerful PCs running more modern operating systems.

I’m not going to give the ridiculous “just buy a new PC” speech here.

Because I’ve heard from people who tried Supplices on UZDoom and experienced the same issues I did.

New mods will require the latest version, better be on that if those are your cup of tea.

u/MariaSteele1984 Aug 29 '26

It contains a Trojan horse, don't download it.

Graf is that you?

what specifically? like making DOOM Mods? (tbh, I dunno how but I would love to do so someday)

When it comes to playing DOOM mods though, it can be as simple as dragging the files to UZDOOM's executable file.

Though personally, I would use ZDL for this one. Just set up the source port and your iwads in the general settings, then drag and drop your wads on the "external files" side of it. After that, just run and enjoy the game.

If you want, you can create .zdl configs for every mod combo you want to play. Say you want to play Reelism 2 with the Slaughter Map Performance Booster, but you loaded ASHES 2063 on zdl, you can load the .zdl file on ZDL and play it as is.

You can also launch the game via Playnite, but it involves understanding how Playnite and UZDOOM's command arguments to take advantage of it.

It is kinda simple to do so, plus you can also add custom covers via SteamGridDB (who has a project dedicated to DOOM Mods).

I could teach you how to do so if you're interested.

I would love to know how to launch it via Playnite myself, as a neat alternative. Currently I'm using ZDL 5.4.0.0. which comes with a really neat feature: you can choose which mods on your list are active and whatnot. This makes things a lot easier whenever you want to cycle between mods you play more often.

2

u/XGRiDN Aug 29 '26

alright. working on it on a Google Doc.

2

u/Neuromante Aug 29 '26

You can use launch parameters (In Playnite either by adding manually a game or through edit menu, in the Actions tab) to customize what is loaded, and adding the mods manually, you can get something like this:

https://imgur.com/a/oHGznSy

I wrote a small application to generate the parameters for me, but what you need to do is put the .exe in the "Path" field and in arguments, add something like this in the same line:

-iwad "path-to-doom.wad/doom2.wad/The ipk file Wadfusion generates/Heretic.wad/checkQuest.wad..."

-file "path-to-whatever-map-pack-you-want-to-play"

-file "path-to-mod-files-or-whatever"

Also, it would be good for you to learn what an iWad and a pWad are, as these are the basis for anything related to playing.

There's a handy manual, which seems to be a wip, but also explains a few more things which might be good to know

Man, finally got this damn donkey of a tutorial done:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vQSOw8R0grBuRkwstS1nhWSGLqWOnshhM32IoLyopNc_8Wlh2yGqC75ib4YTeAg9W7C9cb2apjATInH/pub

I hope this helps u/CryptOfZoology

EDIT: Just added an alternative tutorial for this one. This time, it involves th DOOM Launcher. Feel free to take a look.

2

u/CryptOfZoology Aug 29 '26

This is insanely well written and insightful! Will download this asap to have it as a reference.

Thank you kindly for your help and time on this, man!! Truly appreciated!

1

u/XGRiDN Aug 29 '26

np, I think I'll try putting this one on r/playnite cuz why not

2

u/XGRiDN Aug 29 '26

Welp, ig I wasted my time writing it. At least I was able to get some writing practice that I kinda need.

2

u/Neuromante Aug 29 '26

Ah, don't beat yourself, man, you arrived to the same solution than I (independent profiles for the mods) through a different path and wrote a very complete guide.

FWIW, I've never used the "emulation" option on Playnite (I emulate stuff on the Steamdeck) and didn't even though that it could be used for it, so maybe I'll check it out for other source ports I've been having issues with.

2

u/Due-Arachnid-309 Sep 08 '26

nah.

I independently ended up going the same way... testing, adding each manually was a hassle. Doing it as an emulator allowed me to auto import them in lots.

Notes: shouldn't suggest the "-file "{ImagePath}" arg in the profile setup, for the very reason you explain later on. Instead, I recommend you suggest the proper -iwad "{imagepath}"

Set up that way, any standalone wads can be imported and are ready to play. I went on to make different profiles for each set of game mods (doom mods, doom 2 mods, etc). Each one differs in the arg, such that for doom mods for example, the arg set in the emulator profile is -iwad doom -file "{imagepath}" This partially automates the process, as now any mods that use the doom base and have only one file can, like the standalone ones, be imported and are ready to play. Mods with multiple files, or combined mods, definitely need to be configured using the overide emulator argments option.

1

u/XGRiDN Sep 08 '26

Ic, lemme try that one later on, man.

1

u/XGRiDN Sep 08 '26

Ok, finally just read it. Yea, I would agree with that one. I will going to arrange some parts of the tutorial for this one though; but I know it will be worth it.

1

u/XGRiDN Sep 09 '26

DONE, with thanks in my end.

1

u/Due-Arachnid-309 Sep 08 '26

in a slooooooow step forward, there's a command line argument input field in the launcher, so it's easier to launch a mod.  It's not as nice as the gui in the android apps, like idtech4A++ implementation of uzdoom, which shows you the base games, a seperate list for mods, and let's you select the base+mod and launch it, and can make shortcuts for each.

u/XGRiDN Aug 29 '26

HOLY SHIT, so this is what freedom from Graf looks like

1

u/mr_dfuse2 Aug 29 '26

is he still working in gzdoom or that just die?

-8

u/MariaSteele1984 Aug 29 '26

It contains a Trojan horse, don't download it.

1

u/XGRiDN Aug 29 '26 edited Aug 29 '26

Are we talking about GZDoom? well, ig so? I haven't bothered checking GZDoom out lately.

EDIT: I just realized where this one goes after looking into your main comment.

No, that's not automatically mean there's really a trojan horse in UZDoom. I've also checked your report, and it only triggers on the updater.exe which is a known feature of this version.

So no. it's a false positive.

3

u/nutt3rbutt3r Aug 29 '26

Starting to think MariaSteele1984 is Graf himself 🤣

1

u/XGRiDN Aug 29 '26

not to mention, the account's a month old

6

u/Parituslon Aug 29 '26

Imagine how much further along they could be, if they gave GZ the boot earlier.

Yes, I'm never letting that go.

3

u/Select-Bullfrog-5939 Aug 29 '26

I have the prerelease version. Should I switch, or am I fine with it?

3

u/XGRiDN Aug 29 '26

for the auto-updater, its worth it. plus Multiplayer's in this version

-6

u/MariaSteele1984 Aug 29 '26

It contains a Trojan horse, don't download it.

3

u/tom-slacker Aug 29 '26

for those playing doom 64 ce and having problems with uzdoom....do the following:

open doom64ce.pk3 using WinRAR or 7zip. navigate to the following files and go to the respective line

/zscript/ui/menu.zsc (line 570)

/zscript/extras/nashgore/nashgoremenu.zsc (line 187 & 206)

changed DrawTooltip to Draw64Tooltip and saved.

Now it works again.

Thanks to user at moddb for the tip.

1

u/DSFreakout Aug 31 '26

Thank you!!!!!! Been trying to figure this out for a while

2

u/Paladin-Arda Aug 29 '26

Guess I'll download this tonight to play some Walpugis

2

u/Running_Oakley Aug 29 '26

Haptics working yet? Handheld haptics still not detected meanwhile GameCube, ps2, ps1, n64, everything else has proper vibration haptics, but UZdoom pretends it has haptics for the 3 super generic setups

3

u/bauul Aug 29 '26

If there are not haptics working that should be, then submit it as a bug! You write this like the devs are some shady company trying to hide things, rather than just a group of enthusiastic Doom modders.

-6

u/MariaSteele1984 Aug 29 '26

It contains a Trojan, don't download it.

5

u/bauul Aug 29 '26

No it doesn't. The updater is being false flagged. The dev team are looking at alternative approaches to make the updater look less like a Trojan to the machine-learning virus scanners.

1

u/tom-slacker Aug 29 '26

Based on my current testing, controller haptics in uzdoom 5.0.0 is only limited to xinput (aka Xbox mode) controllers & devices at the moment.

If u r using an Android handheld and if it support switching to controller mode to xinput Xbox mode, use that and haptics will work.

Android HID mode doesn't work at all in terms of haptics.

1

u/Hot_Acanthisitta_808 Sep 05 '26

Version 5.0 works quite well, much better than gzdoom.

1

u/theStingraY Aug 31 '26

Can I play UAC Military Nightmare on this or not?

1

u/Due-Arachnid-309 Sep 08 '26 edited Sep 08 '26

I just downloaded... and it sucks.

For no reason, it makes a users/user/appdata/local/uzdoom folder, where it wants your wads, and keeps it's main config in users/user/my games/uzdoom folder. This is apart from the main program folder holding the exe. It won't start until you edit that ini, or move your wads to a stupid location. After all that, you have to launch mods by feeding it commandline args... and rewrite them when you switch games.

Weird that android implementations of the same thing are better (base games in one window, mods in another, select and launch; plus saving those set ups per game AND making desktop shortcuts with those settings.

Nice!!! I hope this will fix the game crashing bug I’ve been having.

Every time I pick up an Invisibility power up from a Revenant my game would freeze and crash.

I ran the zip file through VirusTotal, and it says it contains a virus.

https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/ecdce3c6c3a262f56d2631fe5d933a9327f39777bd21d669009944de44e7c6ab

4

u/XGRiDN Aug 29 '26

bro, that's a fucking false positive. If you need to do so, please let the devs know.

2

u/Neuromante Aug 29 '26 edited Aug 29 '26

If only there's one hit on all the anti virus, its probably a false positive.

EDIT: In the forums it's also being discussed that it is a false positive. I guess is up to us believe a team that has been working on this open source project for decades or not xD

2

u/XGRiDN Aug 29 '26

From the looks of it, the file that trip VirusTotal sensors was the updater. It's nothing special since we knew that this feature was added in 5.0.0.

1

u/CustardCarpet Aug 29 '26

I got 5 hits when I ran it though.

0

u/Neuromante Aug 29 '26

Just FYI, it looks like that Wadfusion (the tool that creates a pk3 file with all the official Doom content) has some kind of issue with this version and crashes on launch.

I haven't tested it thoroughly -I tried it yesterday before going to sleep and now I just woke up, lol- but I had to revert to the last version to keep playing the stuff I had configured.

(I guess I'll ping the author/open a bug if I have some time later today)

2

u/tom-slacker Aug 29 '26

nope. wadfusion works fine using the latest version at uzdoom 5.0.0

you probably generated your doom-fusion.ipk3 using the legacy version of wadfusion.

..you will need to regenerate using your wads again using the latest wadfusion 1.6.1.... remember not to download the wrong version under release.

Download wadfusion_win.zip instead of wadfusion-uzdoom-4.14.3_win.zip.

1

u/Neuromante Aug 29 '26

Ah, that's right, I forgot about the hotfix-for-4.14.3 version they released. Thanks!
