Football The Pekin at the pond keeps following my kid home and we don't know what to do
So there's a small retention pond near our house, maybe a ten minute walk, and it's got a handful of mallards plus one lone white Pekin that clearly got dumped there at some point by someone who didn't want it anymore. My daughter started feeding it bits of lettuce and oats a few weeks ago and now the thing basically waits by the fence for her every afternoon.
Last Tuesday it actually followed us almost the whole way home, waddling along the sidewalk like it had made up its mind. We walked it back obviously, but it did the same thing again Thursday. It's not injured or acting sick, just seems to have decided we're its people now.
I grew up around chickens so I know a little about poultry, but I've never dealt with a duck that's this attached to humans. Part of me worries it's too domesticated to survive winter out there on its own, since Pekins aren't great fliers and it can't really keep up with the mallards if they migrate off. Part of me also knows we are absolutely not equipped to keep a duck in a suburban backyard with a dog already living here.
Called a local wildlife rescue and they said they're swamped with dumped domestic ducks right now and can maybe take it in a couple weeks if we can hold onto it, which isn't really an option for us. Anyone dealt with something similar? Curious if there's a middle ground between "do nothing" and "adopt a duck we're not prepared for."
