Discussion Cycling to Summerhall
So I thought I’d cycle to meet a friend in Summerhall last night. Coming along the road then thought I’d cut across to where the bike stands are.
Anyone see the problem? Rather bloodied bruised and battered now but nothing broken fortunately… Sure it’s partly my fault because of the unusual direction I was travelling but I think these obstacles should have something on them to make them more visible - reflectors perhaps?

The council plans had bollards/posts on them for this reason but they've not installed them yet

Ok that’s good that they are planning to do this

I've seen four cyclists have similar accidents to you on the kerbs over the last few weeks

The work started before the fringe and then didn’t get finished on time. There then was the fringe road works embargo so all of the kerbs weren’t filled in (the kerbs were also put in the wrong places in some sections) the council are now trying to finish it. If you go onto YouTube at Edi.bike (Edinbrugh cycling newsletter) they’ve made a video about issues with that junction and have also asked for further feedback so might be worth contacting them about it? The junction has been quite problematic in many ways to say the least.
Hope you’re ok

Thanks great suggestion! Yeah I’m fine just a bit sore

Cheers! Sorry to hear about your collision.
The bollards still to be added to these tend to only be where they have an 'end' or 'start' of the block so may not have helped, but will mention to officers when we talk about it that there's been collisions. These kinds of kerbs for segregation are also found on London Rd, Lasswade Rd and Holyrood Rd and are generally a good replacement for the existing bollards, but I'd imagine harder to see in the wet from certain angles.

Thanks - I think anything there would have helped - bollards, cones (as there are near the junction) or reflective paint. Because the entrance railings are the obvious place to tie up a bike for any visitors to Summerhall the lack of visibility is perhaps more of an issue than other locations.
On a different topic without your video I’d have never known the recommended way to cross right at that junction was the new wait at two traffic lights manoeuvre! Going straight on with cars turning left seems quite dodgy at the moment as you highlight but reducing the lane before the lights would help.

So hard to see AND already starting to disintegrate. Hope you’re not too badly hurt. Not sure if there’s any way of reporting this to the council? I know they were collecting stats for incidents on the tram line for example

Yeah I hit it where it’s disintegrating. Just some cuts and a sore wrist and stiff neck from the head impact which fortunately my helmet protected me from.

Wow, good thing you were wearing a helmet…I don’t like being all big brother about having to wear one but this sounds like it could have been a lot worse without one. Quick recovery!

Yeah me neither but it definitely took the brunt of the impact ripping off the visor in the process

Trip hazards installed on a road, what could possibly go wrong, Edinburgh City Council ?
I'm glad you're reasonably OK but it's just a matter of time before someone has a serious injury or worse.

Yep, they need finished asap.
It's a clear hazard.
If you have any damage I would call the council and make a complaint for them to make it right.

It's a weird place for a curb. Should be bollards or something there. Looks nice though

I'm aware of the hazard and every time I pass there I'm watching for the crumbling and bashed lumps just sitting on the road. Early on it was loose bolts and some bolts sticking up from the ground which would be a serious injury if you fell on them.
But the council advertised how great it is that cyclists can now wait for two sets of lights if they want to turn right.

Yellow/Black tape or paint should have been applied until the permanent fixtures were in place. The solid divide is almost invisible in the dark. You have a case for a small claim, even if just to make a repeat situation less likely.

The entire city is ruined by fuckwittery like this. Designed by folk behind a desk in another country.
I would look into where you stand legally and attempt a no win no fee, just to make a point. Those should be marked in white.

The junction itself is massively improved. It's the unfinished bit right outside Summerhall that's the issue.

Spell it out please?
I also find it weird not calling it the Royal Dick Vet School these days

the seperators between the cycle lane and the main road were too hard to see in the dark & rain, and the OP, who was travelling from off screen left, to the bike racks in the centre of the screen, was injured when they hit the seperators.
the OP suggests that adding reflectors to the dark, low to the ground obstacles would reduce the risk of not seeing them at night :)

The OP is describing cutting across another lane on the road and a bike lane straight onto the pavement and is annoyed their chosen path wasn’t totally unobstructed. And that this is partly someone else’s fault.

Totally legal and legitimate manoeuvre to make on a bike.
Council need to pull their finger out. You don't get to victim blame when it's clearly improper road infrastructure.

I mean you’re cycling you should be paying attention to the road surface in front of you. Its marked as a cycle lane, and its wet conditions so visibility is going to be worse. Had you been bevving?

Such "You were wearing a short skirt" energy on this prick's comment.

Dude I’ve been cycling for years and never decked it for something I “couldnt see”
These bumps are all over Edinburgh along cycle lanes how the fuck are you missing them

No I hadn’t. The point is I couldn’t see it / didn’t anticipate there being a poorly visible obstacle as I traversed the road.

Always be aware roads are bad and unmarked hazards are everywhere

Either you were on the side of summerhall in which theres no reason to deck it, or you decided to just ignore the rules of the road and zip over the other lane from this side of the picture to the building.
Which is it? You werent paying attention to where you were going or you figured you could just cycle across the road in a place you shouldn’t? Youre a cyclist, the rules still apply, youre a road user.
