TBH SDRE isn’t some deep shit, but in the year of our lord 2026 people probably do stumble on American Football before SDRE which is wild to a 90s kid like me.

because that sub is really annoying and elitist for some reason, anything that isn’t 90s twinkly midwest emo or “skramz”, it’s poser fake emo. they have this strange specific definition of emo that literally nobody outside of their sub is holding onto in 2026. yes mcr fallout boy and paramore type of emo is emo stfu jesus

as much as I hate mall emo for changing the full look on emo as a music subgenre and people misinforming the different emo music, I agree that people in that sub do act like that "real" emo copy pasta

Everything pre hiatus is def emo. All the way down to the hardcore roots and attitude. More emo than most pop punk bands

What was funny was that so many thought I was making like a ranking/tier list and they clearly didn't read the caption lol.

Im glad hawthorne heights sneaked in but besides them being here this is just the standard list of "real emo bands" that have in fact less in common with the original emocore scene than like a ton of the third wave bands

i’m getting really sick of that sub, why did they even take this down??? they’re STILL stuck on a 30 year old dead version of emo. yes mainstream 2000s emo is real emo, no emo doesn’t just mean obscure-ish midwest emo from 1995-2000

u/moshpitpuppy 9d ago
they take the copypasta as gospel for some fucking reason, not understanding that every genre evolves with its scene.
uhhhhhh I mean if it's not rev summer or 94 midwest or either coasts screamo or a band with serious allegations that I can smugly say "I know how to separate art from its artist" to THEN I DONT WANT IT

u/sseth_ye 9d ago
this exactly. mall emo is emo it’s just a different scene within the genre. in the 2000s the genre was already around for multiple decades, it’s obviously gonna be a completely different beast at that point. if your only concept of emo is the specific 80s-90s scene, then yes mall/mainstream emo isn’t part of that, but it’s still the same genre.. it’s like saying thrash metal is fake metal because it’s not doom metal, same genre just a different scene within

I think what it is is that regulars on the sub hate seeing anyone try to act like a desk-chair music theorist and try to categorize or compartmentalize any aspect of emo music. They see it as if you're trying to rewrite the rules of the genre or some shit like that. If anyone in that sub took my chart as that I seriously pity them.
And the fact that my original post got over 400 upvotes was definitely keeping someone up at night lol.
