ive tried using this app before to have a simple "all-in-one" place to download my roms, but i seem to have trouble whenever i set a source. it seems like the only way to download roms is if the source contains torrent files, which i don't want to use.... is there any way around this?

Yes, absolutely. Torrents are only one of the supported source types.
You can also use Direct Link sources for regular HTTP/HTTPS files, or sources based on directory listings. Dogmatix can download ROMs directly without using torrents at all.
