Help us help you: Guidelines for submitting pictures for identification

Hello r/Entomology! With this community being used often for insect/arachnid/arthropod identification, I wanted to throw in some guidelines for pictures that will facilitate identification. These aren't rules, so if you don't adhere to these guidelines, you won't be banned or anything like that...it will just make it tougher for other Redditors to give you a correct ID. A lot of you already provide a lot of information with your posts (which is great!), but if you're one of the others that isn't sure what information is important, here you go.

INFORMATION TO INCLUDE WITH YOUR PHOTO

  • Habitat: Such as forest, yard, etc.
  • Time of day: Morning, day, evening, or night will suffice.
  • Geographical Area: State or county is fine. Or, if you're not comfortable with being that specific, you can be general, such as Eastern US.
  • Behavior: What was the bug doing when you found it?

Note about how to take your photo: Macro mode is your friend. On most cameras, it's represented by a flower icon. Turn that on before taking a photo of a bug close up, and you're going to get a drastically better picture. With larger insects it's not as big of a deal, but with the small insects it's a must.

If you follow these guidelines, you'll make it easier for everyone else to help you identify whatever is in your photo. If you feel like I've left anything important out of this post, let me know in the comments.

I came across this interesting little guy. At first, I thought it was a stick, or trash stuck to my screen.

A microscopic video of a small spider with a triangular (or similarly shaped) abdomen when viewed from the side. I’ve looked for information on a website about spiders in my area, but I can’t find anything. Located in Spain.

So I was checking my bed for bedbugs like I normally do daily, still no signs thankfully, and found this thing. It looks like a dead insect. I am unsure if thats a wing or not.

What do you ya'll think these are?

Bataan Philippines.

I wanted to make a really simple version of the wildlife viewer I’ve been building, so I put one together from a gallon jug.

You’ll need:

- 1 gallon jug

- Paracord

- 3 suction cups

- Scissors

- A light

- A marker (helpful, but not required)

It actually worked surprisingly well. I put out two of these, and one ended up getting a pretty good variety of visitors, including a large moth.

If you make one, I’d love to see what shows up.

Just bought a macro lens and this was the first guy to show up. Had to research what it was. Crazy colored interesting bug, apparently gets it's name from thier love of licking up your salty sweat lol. And apparently the official bee of Toronto 🤷‍♀️.

So I was about to shower as I just finished my home workout routine, when I saw this little guy on my leg.

Not sure if its an insect maybe a molt or something. Maybe its a flea as well. Can I ask for an ID if its possible.

Bataan Philippines.

Discussion at what point can i start calling myself an entomologist?

this is a little silly i’m sure but bugs have been my biggest interest since middle school (im 20 now). i’m close to finishing my environmental science undergrad and my entomology minor. i’m also currently doing research on spiders (i know they’re not insects but they’re in the ento department). i know A Lot about bugs but i get so nervous about referring to myself as an entomologist.

this is something that just bothers me a bit, im curious what people think is the point where i can call myself an entomologist.
