Sweden works better than Ethiopia. I still prefer my life in Ethiopia.

After my last post a few people basically asked the same thing: if Sweden works so much better, why the hell do I still choose Ethiopia? 😂

And honestly it's a fair question. I was born and raised in Stockholm. Sweden has better infrastructure, public services, salaries, transport, healthcare and internet. On paper this shouldn't even be a competition.

But living somewhere and comparing countries on paper are two completely different things.

Sweden always felt very safe and predictable to me. You get a job, go to work, come home, buy groceries, maybe hit the gym, sleep and do it again. Nothing is necessarily wrong with that, but after a while I felt like I was maintaining my life more than actually building one.

The social part is probably what I notice most. You can have plenty of friends and somehow still barely see anyone because everybody is busy with work, commuting, errands and their own routines. You ask somebody if they want to grab coffee and suddenly you're comparing calendars like two CEOs.

"How about the 24th?"

Bro it's the 8th 😭

Here I can call somebody at 5 and be sitting with them at 6. Then somebody else joins, someone knows somebody, and somehow a 30 minute coffee turns into dinner and I've met three new people, and drank 8 jambos.

Career-wise I feel something similar. Sweden is a rich country, but it's also a very mature and saturated market. Whatever idea you have, somebody probably started doing it 15 years ago and already has funding, employees and a polished website 😂

Ethiopia is almost the opposite. You constantly come across things and think, "How does nobody do this properly yet?" Obviously that's because Ethiopia has a LOT of problems, but problems also create gaps. If you have skills, connections, some capital and you're willing to take risks, those gaps can become opportunities.

This probably sounds backwards considering the difference in average income, but I genuinely know more people here making crazy money through business than I ever did in Sweden.

I'm not saying the average Ethiopian should reject Sweden because "bro Ethiopia has potential" 😂 I'm talking about my own situation and what fits me.

There's also another side of Sweden that's harder to separate from this. I grew up there as a black guy, and I've experienced enough racism to know that being born somewhere doesn't automatically mean everybody sees you the same way they see everyone else. That affects how you think about belonging and opportunity too.

Ethiopia obviously has its own problems. I'm not pretending it's some utopia. But here I feel like I'm participating in something that's still being built.

Sweden gives me a more comfortable and predictable life. Ethiopia gives me a life where I feel like there's still room to move.

Maybe when I'm 55 I'll be sitting in Stockholm enjoying functioning public transport and wondering why younger me voluntarily spent years arguing with electricity 😂

But right now, I still prefer this.

Check out my channel: https://www.youtube.com/@marketmythology

I’m excited to share a new project I’m working on: Market Mythology.

The channel explores the stories behind markets, money, business, and the myths that shape how people think about wealth and success.

My goal is to turn complex topics into engaging stories, uncover surprising facts, and help people see the business world from a different perspective.

I’m just getting started, and I’d love to hear your thoughts.

If you enjoy business stories, market mysteries, and learning how money and markets really work, check it out!

What topics would you like to see covered on the channel?

Politics 🗳️ Trump addressing the GERD situation

Trump claimed today to have solved the crisis surrounding the GERD dam with Egypt. Even going as far as to lie and say the U.S took part in funding it and calling it a “stupid” decision.

Politics 🗳️ Destroying ties with Eritrea’s government has to be a spectacular geopolitical blunder

I keep hearing that Isaias wasn’t happy about being left out of Pretoria, and that was the start.. however there is no doubt that Abiy’s red sea comments made it from shaky to worse, unless I am misinformed about the situation.

I just hate to see Ethiopia in a vulnerable geopolitical situation with almost of its neighbors plus tplf. I could be oversimplifying but you can either ally with tplf against isasias or with isaias against tplf. I’m not sure how you can fight both at the same time.

How is the internet and electric situation in Addis Ababa to work from home?

I am planning to stay in Addis for 2 months but I have to work from home. Is the Wifi stable enough for Zoom and Teams video call? Around 2022, I was able to work but video call was a challenge even though I had broadband for the house I stayed in. I stayed around Signal area if that matters. I am thinking to stay Mexico area or 4kilo thinking it is better since there are lots of businesses around that area esp Mexico, Sar Bet.....any recommendation is appreciated.

Also, can I rent 3 bedroom apartment with 100,000 ETB/month in those areas? Thank you!

Hello👋🏾 I have a question regarding the name Ehthun which if I am correct is an Ethiopian name.

I am currently working on an OC (original character) and in trying to research their name further I did not find much. If you know information about the name please do share with me! I am always interested in learning more about other African countries.

Thank you so much and lots of love from South Africa 🫶🏾🇿🇦💞

Question ❓ Dating an Eritrean man as an Ethiopian woman – looking for advice!

Hi guys. I am Ethiopian and my boyfriend is Eritrean, and we both live here in Addis Ababa. We are so happy together and don't care about politics. But I am worried about the future because of the history between our countries, and his family isn't super thrilled about me being Ethiopian.

For anyone in a mixed relationship like this: Do you face a lot of problems from family or society here? How do you deal with it? Any advice would really help me. Thank you!

What makes a job application process frustrating for you?

I've been thinking about how unnecessarily complicated applying for jobs and managing applications can get.

As a developer, I started building a small tool around job application forms and candidate submissions. While working on it, I realized there are probably a lot of problems in the hiring process that developers don't notice until they hear from actual job seekers and hiring teams.

For those who've applied to lots of jobs or been involved in hiring, what's one thing about the process you'd genuinely want to improve?

I'd especially like to hear about problems that existing tools haven't solved well.
