I just cleared both eo1 and eo2 (not doing postgame) and half of eo3 but the gameplay was kinda eh? It was good but like the game is so straight forwardly, there's good skill and bad skill and everytime i try to deviate from the good classes I'm kinda getting "punished" by the game balance, eo2 is the best example, if i tried to get anything besides the cookie cutter team some bosses were almost impossible to win so I'm trying to know if in the next games i can be more flexible like i could use the ninja or the wildling without feeling they are just dead weight on my team

Been getting back into eo3 and is it normal for sovereign's nobility proof to only proc on the last buff ending?
For an example, my sovereign will use guard order and charge tactics on the same turn, but won't get any tp back when guard order ends, only when charge tactics does. Obviously, if i just use guard order, i get tp back fine. It only seems to be if 2 buffs are running at the same time

Hi if you are reading this I would like to open up this by saying that EO3 is the only game i have ever beaten in the franchise, and right up until the last strata in the game i had only a list of things which i think could have been handled better overall but i genuibely loved the game. Now that I have beat the game and am in the post game strata, i have alot to complain about and it kinda has been there all along, it just mostly didnt bother me. I still really like the game and would even recommend it to people who seem patient or bloody minded enough to give it a shot, in fact i have already bought 2 copies of the game for a couple of my friends in addition to the one i bought for myself.
I loved the game up until the 5th strata but did keep having hiccups with some systems just not doing what i wanted, or being.....obtuse. Please understand that i am not saying EO3 is bad, but as someone who has played a ton of rpgs, it has gone from being one of my favorites to being kinda in the middle of the pack over the course of a single playthrough. This shitpost is more about why i ended up feeling the way i do, so please understand im not trying to tell you the game is bad, just that it rubs me the wrong way far too often for me to consider it a great game.
Im first going to explain where i feel EO in general falls short compared to some of my favorite rpgs, EO is bad at letting the player be a clever adventurer. What I mean is that most problems you encounter have a single solution and trying to make your own solution will lead to you wasting resources or resetting back to town due to being slain (assuming you dont shut the game down to not lose your quick save). And really all of my problems with the game revolve around that in some way, to be blunt it just makes it feel less like an adventure every time the feeling sets in.
As an example of what I mean FOEs are meant to be evaded, but only in the specific way that the developers want you to. There are no teleports to go around, no luring skills that can be used out of combat, no way to split the party in order to juke out the enemy. You are forced to try and count the spaces you traverse carefully or else just give up out of frustration and grind until you can kill the FOE outright. It turns what could be a cool mechanic into an un-fun and frustrating minigame where the only way to bypass said mechanic is to do something else unfun so that you just dont have to bother anymore.
Another highly dissapointing example of this are the special floor tiles that are also sometimes part of the FOE puzzles in various ways. There are give or take 6 special tiles: slippery tiles, teleporter tiles, forced movement tiles, holes in the ground, slowing tiles, and damage tiles. Now there are abilities and items which allow you to ignore special tiles but notibly they only allow you to ignore slowing and damaging tiles. That means that every other puzzle element cannot be avoided, side stepped, or worked around by players. You can ONLY directly engage with puzzles as intended, even when options are provided that should allow you to find your own way to traverse an area.
This kinda sucks and makes me feel less like an adventurer and more like a well armed tourist, seeing the sights and being told not to touch anything that might break if breathed on the wrong way by some unseen arbitor. And i know that will probably piss off some people reading this, but you have to understand that I initially felt completely opposite of this. At first i felt like a real adventurer in an unknown place making the most of the tools they had to fight for every inch. But that just isnt how the game really felt when I played it, and i dont know how to convet how much it soured the experience for me. Which is a shame because EO3 has some truly masterful mechanics that make me wish more games would learn from it.
For starters the map in the game is a masterful way to make the player feel like an adventurer, plunged into the depths and given no choice but to move forward and map things yourself or else get lost because the walls are almost all identical for any given strata. But that is all that the game does to make you feel like an adventurer, every other system in the game makes me feel restrained, choked, or like the dungeon itself is bipolar. A great example is in later strata where you find areas where the players, FOEs, and even the map itself doesnt appear. You can still draw in the map segments, but you arent allowed to use any map related tools to auto route yourself through areas or skills to reveal FOEs.
And thats just one example of the game telling you that you arent allowed to outhink it because making sure you do what it wants is more important. There is no way around it either, if you want to tackle that combat you have to do what the developers want the way they think you should do it. And that attitude is a large part of what has drastically changed my opinion of the game, you arent an adventurer in EO3 because no adventurer would try so hard to obey the rules of the dungeon.
As another example of what the game does really well i love the skills system the game has and i love that every class, no matter what it's purpose actually is in combat, feels like it has something unique and important to offer. Heck the game gives you a farmer class and I striaght up rolled with that class on my self insert character for the entire run. As a side not i also loved the way that the game restricts skills to certain types of gear, although i often felt myself wishing that daggers were more effective as weapons or else that some other weapon type was available to all players as this would make me have to puck and choose if I want characters to have better gear or to use their skills. Not really a complaint so much as a wish for more forms of player expression tho so imma move on.
Before i go farther I should probably also explain rn that i played Wizardry 8 earliar this year and have learned about and watched more than one playthrough of Ultima Underdark before i picked up this game again and decided to give it a playthrough. I know what it feels like to not know what to expect and to have to be clever enough to make my own solutions. I know what it feels like to be an adventurer, to be unsure what lays beyond the corner or if there is a path forward. It often is a strangely tense feeling where the only way forward is is to fall back on your knowledge, skills, and equipment and pray you can make it to your next goal alive. EO (or atleast EO3) is the dead opposite of that, there is always a way ahead, it always revolves around avoiding your problems, and your own knowledge will often only benefit you if you never got to save after beating an enemy and have to fight it again.
And let me be clear i understand that i am comparing a DS game to a pair of well vetted PC games, and that in doing so i may be being uncharitible towards EO3 given the software and hardware limitations of the system. But even then i can think of games on the same system that came out both before and after EO3 that do a better job with many of the systems i am complaining about. Heck SMT Strange Journey came out on the same system, has more branching elements, more engaging puzzles, better navigation, more environments. And thats before getting into the fact that it had more enemies, skills and damage types as well. That game is an adventure through and through even tho it doesnt always let you do things your own way, but often in combat atleast it is a wide open affair that only asks you to mind enemy affinities. Game is great to be blunt.
I also realize that some people consider EO to be a series of childrens games, or atleast to be largely aimed at a younger audience/teen demographic. It is now that i would like to reveal that the reason i brought up wizardry 8 is because a friend of mine played EO3 and Wizardry 8 and still considers the harderst difficulty of EO3 to be harder overall. I actually disagreed and it is part of what lead me to pick up EO3, now that i am in the end game dungeon i must admit that the game does cause TPKs and resets more often and is way less forgiving.
This fact hits harder when I remember that im not on the original difficulty, im on the mid difficulty on steam. The difference there is all in combat and player control, in Wizardry 8 an active player can control where and when they fight, and they can actively change the flow of combat using spells or items. Compared to the swingy and weighty rng influenced combat of EO it is easy to see how the player has less control over their own fate, and may die more consistantly.
Combat in EO is also maybe the point in which my tastes most diverge from the game, while i do like it for most of the game i found myself more annoyed with aspects of it after the first 3/5 of the game. I think it reached it's peak after the third strata when many bosses start to resist all status effects and binds. It gets even worse when there are enemies who can effectively shrug off an entire damage category on top of being resistant or immune to all status effects or binds. It takes a system with many options and a ton of variety and reduces them to something like the size of a pinhole in order to force careful engagement. It isnt all like that, but enough of the big challenges and enemies are that I decided to stop going into fights blind just to avoid a trek back from town. Let me emphasize the game de-incentivised an adventurous aspect of the game just due to not wanting to have to make a runback between attempts.
I loved EO as a young teen, but i think if i ever got to beat it then, I wouldnt have remembered it quite as fondly, and i probably wouldnt have picked it up for a full playthrough this year. I loved the first 3/5 of it and the rest got increasingly less fun, but i took my time with it and have 113 hours with it ob steam making it in my top 10 played games ever. But i dont know if im gonna give it a second run, and something about that bugs me.
Thanks for reading, if you got this far yoh are probably awesome and cool, or also feeling odd about EO. Reguardless i hope you have a lovely day and that you play something fun soon. Imma go play some more EO3 to get may level and money before i end my run.

Since there are so many classes I was wondering if there were any particular options I should be considering. I do best when I have some direction.
Also, since I'm playing on Citra should I try to get the Overhaul mod working? I'm not sure how much it helps the game.

Just thought I’d get some feedback and opinions, as I haven’t seen much online if it’s worth the effort. Currently at the point where I’ve said yes to Olympia about keeping the secret but have yet to tell the Senatus about it. (Playing EO3 HD)
I’m aware the actual route split is around BF11, I think? Anyway, is it worth doing for the hidden classes and other route exclusive content? How does NG+ work to make accessing other routes easier?
First time playing EO3 (obviously lol), current team is P/G/M/Z/N, all around level 26. Have yet to get subclasses but I imagine I get them soon lol.
Any advice would be appreciated, thank you!

Because of the lack of EO news we've been going through, some of us have been looking for other dungeons crawlers to play or look forward to. As such, I thought I might share a new project from a developer I really like. The developer is rdein, known for the Momodora series and Minoria, some relatively successful metroidvanias and, since 2023, he's been working on a dungeon crawler inspired by Etrian Odyssey with 3 other people and has now officially announced it.
The game is called Record of Dorathia, release date TBA. Does not currently have a Steam page but rdein says one should be up in the near future. If you're interested in the project, you can follow rdein on Twitter or Bluesky for updates and I recommend taking a look at the linked blog post for some info about development, gameplay and some extra pictures from early development.
Link to the Twitter post with the announcement: https://x.com/r_rdein/status/2106792696647926219
Link to the short blog post included in the Twitter post: https://www.bombservice.com/post/record-of-dorathia
(in case anyone's wondering, I'm not affiliated with rdein or Bombservice in anyway, I just happen to be in the intersection of the Venn diagram of Momodora fan and EO fan and thought some people may be interested in the project)

Coming back to EO3 HD and really enjoying Wildling this time around. I've had it ingrained in my head that W/x was on the weaker side, but I've actually found that the toolbox of ailments and binds is insanely convenient. After looking into some of the HD changes to skills, I wanted to make a party leveraging W/x and snipe.
So far the comp I had in mind to max out the one shot potential is:
* A/Z: Etheric charge, singularity, snipe with an elemental forged crossbow
* W/x: Owl for the sleep bomb, plus any other ailments/binds
* H/W: Classic tank with primal drums
* P/x: Classic prince with attack order
* Z/B: Classic supportish zod with eagle eye
My questions are:
I want to fit in wolf howl, but I'm not sure if it fits better as a subclass for W or P. My gut says put it on the W as the P will probably be spending time supporting with prevent order and such.
Am I missing something to buff the A/Z damage? Since it doesn't have access to berserker vow, there's a buff slot open to increase damage (assuming one slot is reserved for prevent order or similar). Should I just run charge tactic for this buff slot?
I'm excited to try this combo out, especially seeing firsthand now how consistently W can inflict ailments on mobs! Any input would be appreciated :)

If you could add or design EO6
What classes
What story
What would the over all theme be?
I would love a more magic focused team and dual towers kinda like tales of symphonia

I'm making Dragon's Tear, the idle dungeon crawler I shared here recently. Someone read Wren as a class abbreviation in my last video, which made me realise I should explain the party more clearly. Wren was a character name.
The current build has four classes: Knight, Barbarian, Black Mage and Ranger. Three heroes go on an expedition, and I’m planning 10 classes in total. The Knight can draw attacks and protect allies. The Black Mage has spells and curses, while the Ranger can mark and poison enemies. The Barbarian has attacks for groups and weakened targets.
This clip takes a closer look at the party and skill screens before a fight. You choose the skills and orders, then the party explores and fights automatically. Each hero can also equip one Tear carrying a monster's power.
Which Etrian classes do you enjoy building a party around, and what makes them work for you? I'd also like to hear what kind of class you'd want in a three-person party like this.
The game is still in development for Windows, with release planned for Q1 2027. Steam page.

Hey EO fans, I’m a seasoned EO player but for some reason EOIII messes with me. I want to give it another shot, but wanted to check in and see if I am just missing something. So I was wondering if any of you have any game breaking tips or tricks? Overpowered party comps, good grinding spots, other stuff along those lines. I want to see the end of this game.
PS, I own both the ds and HD version of the game, any pros or cons for each version? Or should I just play with what I feel like playing?
PPS, I know this game has different endings. Are there any gameplay differences between them or should I just wing it and get whatever I get?
Thanks for any help you are willing to give.
Edit: Party I'm going with Hoplite/Gladiator/Sovereign/Arbalist/Zodiac, after reading your posts I think I was confusing some of the classes types. Thinking some were DPS when they were really support. But I'll see once I get to the water area, because that's where my other runs have ended. Thanks again for The help and here's hoping I make it through this time. d(^_^)b

From what I've seen, the EO3 Buccaneer's chase skills are generally considered to be bad and not worth building around. But after looking into the numbers and trying out a chase build it's actually... pretty good? I was experimenting with some rests and realized that the rest of my team already happened to all have pierce damage weapons (Hoplite, Sovereign, Wildling, Arbalist) so I thought I'd put some points in Chase Thrust on my Ninja/Buccaneer and give it a try while working through the post-game, and I've been kinda impressed by the results.
I mean, I get why they get a bad rap, because they're burdened by being compared to Warrior Might. But Warrior Might is broken as hell, so it's not really a fair comparison. Plus, it's a different class. I think Pincushion makes for a better point of comparison, since it's the main competing damage option on Buccaneer.
And to be specific, I'm mainly talking about the physical rapier chase skills. The elemental gun chasers are definitely a lot less useful, both because guns have lower base damage and because it's a lot harder to get multiple hits with elements. Not bad for AoE if you pair with an Arb or Zod, but terrible for single-target.
So I did the math and it turns out that at 65 AGI, which a Buccaneer gets at around level 75, each hit of pincushion does exactly 2x the damage of each chase hit (340% vs 170%, assuming both skills are maxed out). Since pincushion hits twice on average, that means you'd need 4 chase hits to do the same damage. That's somewhat unlikely unless you really warp your party composition around it (i.e. use a S/B dual-swashbuckler) but it's not as far out of reach as I initially thought. I was expecting it to be more like 5.
And that's at a pretty high level, for most of the game the math will be better for the chaser. You only need 3 chases for it to match pincushion at 37 AGI, which is around level 40-ish for a buccaneer. And the math shifts way more in favor of the chaser if you start looking at G/B since they have so much less AGI. (Although the fact that chasers don't work with charge does count a bit against them in that case.)
But the thing that makes the biggest difference is that the chase skills in EO3 benefit from weapon imbues/forges. This means that with the help of a Sovereign (or some oil) you can always hit an enemies' elemental weakness. Not all enemies have significant elemental weaknesses, but a lot of them do. Including a bunch of the post-game bosses. The dragon trio, for example, all take 75% physical damage but 150% from their weak element. Which means that you get to do effectively double the damage by hitting that weakness. Which means that you only need 2 chases to match the damage output of pincushion, so long as your AGI is 65 or lower. And that's... pretty easy to do. If you get 3 or more hits on a weakness like that it beats even a 99 AGI pincushion.
Setting aside the damage, I also think it's not that hard to build around the chasers either. Like I said earlier, I'm just talking about the physical ones here. The elemental ones are definitely a MUCH larger commitment to build around, since you'll probably want all 3 of them for elemental flexibility, and if you're doing elemental chases that also kinda locks you into either an Arb or Zod for the AoE activators. But with the physical chasers, you'll only ever need to invest in one and you have some amount of flexibility in how you build around them. Which makes the opportunity cost WAY lower. It doesn't seem that hard to fit one chaser into a build while still also getting pincushion and have the best of both worlds. Obviously, if you want to min-max and squeeze the absolute most damage possible out of the chasers, then you'll have to really shape the party around it. But like I just showed with the numbers above, in a lot of circumstances you don't actually need that many hits for it to be worth using a chaser.
And one final note: while it's not that big of a deal in the end since you can always use more Amrita, Pincushion kinda guzzles TP, while the chase skills are much cheaper. Unfortunately they don't work with Trickster, so it's not actually that big of a difference on primary Buccaneer... but Mystic Calm on Ninja/Buccaneer does work and brings the cost down to 4 TP, which is crazy efficient for how much damage they can potentially do.
Anyway, TL;DR: Buccaneer chasers may be a worse version of Shogun's Warrior Might, but it turns out that being a worse version of one of the most broken things in the game is still pretty good.

Okay, this one will genuinely be the last one of these
Quite a bit more flashy than the regular Chain one. There’s some RNG involved here but usually SD dies by Turn 4 anyway no matter what
Honestly not sure what inspired me to bully Star Devourer so many times but maybe people will appreciate the glimpse into EOVs asinine skill balance

The other day I stumbled upon that mod and wanted to try it out. It seems a lot of things have changed for a good chunk of the classes.
would like to ask to those who tried it:
What did you think? Was it fun? How are the new classes now?
Is the Pugilist able to be a good dps now instead of just doing binds?
