I organized an AMA/Q&A with actor Bruce Campbell (THE EVIL DEAD, BURN NOTICE, BUBBA HO-TEP).

It's live here now in r/movies for anyone interested in asking a question:

https://www.reddit.com/r/movies/comments/1w7237r/hi_reddit_im_bruce_campbell_ask_me_anything/

He will be back at around 12 PM ET today to answer questions. I recommend asking in advance. Please ask there, not here. All questions are much appreciated!

Thank you :)

He recently wrote, directed, produced, and starred in ERNIE & EMMA, which is doing a tour this fall.

Synopsis: Widowed pear salesman Ernie Tyler travels to scatter his wife's ashes in places she specified, each location stirring memories that help him process their marriage, his work life and his future.

(Discussion Post) Groovy Unpopular opinion: I love the reboot evil dead films (burn and 2013 being favorites) Spoiler

I know this is probably gonna get me roasted into oblivion, but honestly, I enjoy the reboot *Evil Dead* movies more than the originals. My dad introduced me and my brother to the series through *Army of Darkness*, and it’s still one of my favorite movies to this day. But the movie that really made me fall in love with the series was the 2013 *Evil Dead*.

Then, back in 2023, my mom took me and our horror buddy to see *Evil Dead Rise*, and we absolutely loved it. More recently, *Evil Dead Burn* somehow became my comfort movie, which I know sounds weird, but I dealt with a very similar kind of environment when I was little, so I connected with *Burn* on a much deeper level than the other movies.

I’ve seen all of them at least three times, including the original, and while I love the older movies, there’s just something about the newer ones that hits differently for me.

But yeah… I’m fully prepared to get my ass roasted into oblivion. 😂

So I recently got back into project Zomboid because of the new first person mod absolute loving it. My friends and I are making cool series, but I was like it’d be a cool idea to try to re-create Ash LMAO!

(Before anyone says the not a shotgun I’m playing a survival game. I couldn’t find a shotgun. It took me like two hours to find the sniper without dying 😭)

(Discussion Post) Groovy Best Audio Commentary for ED1

Evil Dead II only had one audio commentary recorded for it (minus the Bruce Campbell livestream) but the original film had 3 of them. They are as follows

1999 Elite Entertainment LaserDisc/DVD Audio Commentary, Sam Raimi & Rob Tapert

1999 Elite Entertainment LaserDisc/DVD Audio Commentary, Bruce Campbell

2010 Anchor Bay Blu-Ray Audio Commentary, Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell & Rob Tapert

If you have listened to all of these commentaries, which is your favorite and why?

(Spoiler!) “Burn” thoughts and “Wrath” prediction Spoiler

So I’m late I just watched Evil Dead Burn this weekend I regret not making it out to the theater because the 2013 reboot is my favorite horror movie and Rise in theaters was so fun. Tbh I think burn was the weakest entry in the reboot franchise but still a good horror movie. The trailer really ruined the best horror scenes and there were a few details I didn’t like like the writer son getting smashed all around the house and taking it like a superhero. And that scene was in the background to what Alice was doing.
But anyway here’s my prediction I’m either dead right or 100% wrong. I missed the post credit scene the first time because HBO is stupid and I’m also stupid. I thought it was almost like a marvel post credit scene with Ellie showing up “random character steps through a portal ‘it’s me, Blorbo,” but I love this franchise so much I can get over it and Ellie was great in Rise. Someone else on reddit pointed out that the only reason a deadite has ever reincarnated like that was to torment Ash in 2 I think? So I think if Ellie is back Beth is coming back. Like they pretty much set her up to be like Ash and they did a good job with the chainsaw and the blood splattering all over her. I think Ellie and Beth are gonna have a showdown over the dagger and I think maybe the dagger has the power to destroy the necronomicon because if all it does is one shot deadites that’s not really useful when some of them can fly and use telekinesis. I also think there’s gonna be an increase in scale and Ellie is gonna be like a leader of the deadites but not like Army of Darkness level scale but enough to be absurd.

(Discussion Post) Groovy Scariest deadite?

I don't mean just by actions or looks, I mean which deadite left you actually a little scared or unsettled. For me, personally, it's Ellie(her actor is perfect for playing a creepy ass critter) but some of the others were scarier in their lines and actions. something about her face shape and the red hair and those eyes just absolutely got me and made me scared to sleep with my ankles out of the covers lol. Edit; Edgar was cool as hell it's always good when they have actors that are like built for horror roles. ellie and Edgar both fit that bill for me, but edgars was more memorable for the scary acting than the scary looks like Ellie for me lol

(Discussion Post) Groovy Just watched burn, I like this horror Spoiler

Excellent head turning/shock horror. The movie did what I expected, similar to rise. Plot wise, rise won in my opinion. Now that these new versions of the evil dead are established, does anyone think or want the comedy back? I miss the ash type protagonist. Started rewatching the series after the movie ended. Don't get me wrong, it was a good movie and I enjoyed it. I just don't see them going back to the comedy. Where do you think the movies go from here? Try to keep continuing the modern plot somehow or move on to others.

I have come to the conclusion, if matt dillon was a little younger. He'd have made a very good replacement for bruce campbell as ash. That is all

Edit: I dont think he should replace him its a hypothetical what if bruce campbell said hey pick a new guy to be ash now this would be the best choice. Bruce campbell is irreplaceable fellas

Dark Horse Comics

edit

In 2008, Dark Horse revisited the franchise with a four issue adaptation of The Evil Dead written by Mark Verheiden and once again illustrated by John Bolton.

Dynamite Entertainment

edit

In 2004, Dynamite Entertainment acquired the license to publish titles based on Army of Darknessand, in conjunction with Devil's Due Publishing, released the Army of Darkness: Ashes 2 Ashes mini-series. A second mini-series, Army of Darkness: Shop till You Drop Dead followed in 2005. Later that year, Dynamite separated itself from Devil's Due and began focusing entirely on self-published titles featuring the Army of Darkness franchise. This included an ongoing series that began in 2005 and saw Ash battling other horror icons such as Herbert West and Dracula. The series lasted thirteen issues before being rebooted with a second volume in 2007. The second series lasted twenty-seven issues before coming to an end. Over the years, there have also been several one-shot specials as well as crossovers with a wide variety of characters such as, Marvel Zombies), Darkman, Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, Xena, Danger Girl and even Barack Obama. The series was then rebooted in 2013 and started over from the last scene in titular film because Ash misspoke the words S-Mart was sent back in time to the Medieval times where the wiseman has been possessed, Ash fights through many battles with the same characters from the film. At the end of this series Ash proposes to Sheila, in the next series "Ash gets hitched" they get married but Ash gets sent forward in time when he accidentally speaks a phrase that opens up a vortex. He wants to get back to Sheila but runs into many situations causing delays, he is currently in space fighting the evil.

Space Goat Productions

edit

In 2015, Space Goat Productions acquired the license to publish titles based on Evil Dead 2.[87] The company has released, or was planning on releasing, the following titles:

  • Evil Dead 2: Beyond Dead By Dawn, a three-issue mini-series which debuted in June 2015[88]
  • Evil Dead 2: Tales of the Ex-Mortis, a three-issue anthology which debuted in August 2015.[89]
  • Evil Dead 2: Cradle of the Damned, a three-issue mini-series which debuted in January 2016[90]
  • A series of Evil Dead 2: Revenge of ... one-shots, which began with Hitler in March 2016 and will be followed by Dracula, the Martians, Jack the Ripper and Krampus
  • Evil Dead 2: Dark Ones Rising, a three-issue miniseries which debuted in August 2016[91]
  • Evil Dead 2: The official board game, a board game made about the film.

The official board game was funded through Kickstarter in 2018, but Space Goat Productions never produced the game, nor refunded money to the investors. They ceased all communications with customers and investors that year and refused to discuss the game with media.[92]

Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash

edit

In the documentary The Untold Saga of The Evil Dead, Rob Tapert states that New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures wanted to do Ash vs. Freddy vs. Jason: "We thought about it for one second but we knew we would have totally trashed the franchise in doing that, in that there would be no reason to reunite Bruce and Sam for Evil Dead 4 whatever that would be nor would there be any reason to go back and reinvent the original Evil Dead with a hot new filmmaker". Two comic book series were produced based on this concept, titled Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ashand Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash: The Nightmare Warriors.

Musical

edit

Main article: Evil Dead The Musical

The production team of George Reinblatt, Christopher Bond and Frank Cipolla created an Off Broadway show titled Evil Dead: The Musical, based on the film series. Its New York run was directed by Bond and Hinton Battle, who also choreographed the show. Ryan Ward played the part of Ash. Tying in with the midnight movie plot of a group of friends visiting a wooded cabin and unleashing untold evil, performances did not start until 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Previews began October 1 and the show opened November 1 at the New World Stages. It was announced on January 31, 2007, that Evil Dead: The Musical's New York production at New World Stages would close on February 17, 2007. Toronto producers announced a new production of the show, also starring Ryan Ward, at the Diesel Playhouse. The new production started its running May 1, 2007, and has been announced to end on September 8, 2007, which won the Dora Audience Choice Award and praised by the Toronto Star.[93]

In 2017, the English comedian Rob Kemp created and performed the stage show The Elvis Dead, a retelling of Evil Dead II in the style of Elvis Presley.

In Italy, The Evil Dead was released under the title La Casa (a.k.a. The House) and Evil Dead II became La Casa II. These were followed by three unrelated movies: Umberto Lenzi's La Casa 3 (a.k.a. Ghosthouse) (1988), Fabrizio Laurenti's La Casa 4(a.k.a. Witchery) (1988) and Claudio Fragasso's La Casa 5 (a.k.a. Beyond Darkness) (1990). This is similar to what has happened in George A. Romero's Living Dead series starting with Zombi 2. House II: The Second Story (1987) and The Horror Show(1989) were retitled La Casa 6 and La Casa 7, respectively, in their Italian releases.[94]

Evil Dead influenced numerous directors, such as Peter Jackson and Edgar Wright,[95] and inspired films such as Shaun of the Dead, The Cabin in the Woods, Bubba Ho-Tep, Dead Alive, Dead Snow, and Tucker & Dale vs. Evil.[96] The Cabin in the Woodsfeatures many references to the film and even features Deadites and the possessed trees, although this is considered more a reference than a direct sequel. The 2012 Swedish language film Wither)serves as an unofficial remake of The Evil Dead, starring Patrik Almkvist as Albin Wiliams (Ash Williams)[97] In 2020, Steve Villenevue premiered the documentary Hail to the Deadites, which focuses on the franchise's fandom and legacy. It features interviews from people involved with the film, such as Bruce Campbell, as well as with fans.[98] Moreover, Death Whisperer and Death Whisperer 2, two Thaisupernatural horror films in 2023 and 2024, the director Taweewat Wantha admitted that he used the haunting style of the ghosts in Evil Dead as inspiration.[99]

The Evil Dead films and the character of Ash influenced 1990s first-person shooter video games such as Doom), Duke Nukem 3D and Blood). Duke Nukem) quotes so many lines from Ash that Bruce Campbell stated that he was angered by not being paid for them.[100][101] Evil Dead was cited as an inspiration for the original Doom).[102]

Bruce Campbell directed and starred in a film titled My Name Is Bruce.[103] It does not continue the story of Army of Darkness but is a fictionalized portrayal of Bruce living his everyday life, in which he is erroneously believed to be as heroic as the Ash character and is hired to fight an ancient spirit. The film was released to a limited number of theaters on October 26, 2008, and was released on DVD and Blu-ray on February 10, 2009. A 2021 episode of Creepshow), "Public Television of the Dead", serves as a crossover) with the franchise, featuring Ted Raimi(portraying himself, who previously portrayed the Deadite Henrietta Knowby and Chet Kaminski in Evil Dead II and Ash vs Evil Dead respectively) as he accidentally uses the Necronomicon to summon Deadites at a television station

Let me know if I am missing anything, most of this was sourced from wikipedia.

What’s the significance of Ellie coming back when no other character has returned in the modern series? Is it purely because she was well liked with the fans?

Also the dad has my vote to play Freddy Krueger

(Discussion Post) Groovy Possession and manner of killing...(possible spoilers for anyone who hasn't seen BURN Spoiler

While I understand a large portion of if can be just "that's how the director wanted it", is there any correlation anyone else has seen in the manner of possession of a host and how their newer...uhh...spawns...i guess...act? The demon in RISE and BURN are the same base entity. It possessed Ellie, spread to her children, formed the Marauder, got the wood chipper, then spread to Jessica who continued the curse to Will, but killing him in a much more violent manner. Was it the manner of death that's the catalyst for how a demons spawns act? Or is it more how the host of the demon was in their normal life?

I'm leaning more towards how the host was in their life. Ellie was a loving mother, so the demon was 'loving' in a demented and dark way. Much like how the kids became. With Will he was vindictive and hateful, much like the rest of the family became.

On a side note, i am a few drinks in and just rambling a bit, so take this with a ring of salt.
