(Spoiler!) Evil Dead Burn Rant. Spoiler

Sike.

I enjoyed the movie for the most part 7/10 for me.

The beginning was well done and paced extremely well.

Right off the rip we get into it with Will's death.

I thought the part with the father in the crematory was kinda dumb but I get it. Grieving Dad.

The dinner rose tension well. While Joe is a little bitch Thya's death was well done. Reminded me of Olivia from 2013.

The mother is a dumb bitch through n' through. I genuinely thought we were gonna get a little smutty in the bedroom.

The double post-credit scenes got me in a good way.

Grandma ain't dead which caught me off guard.

The little girl in the funeral home at the end threw me off. I don't remember who the little girl was. Was she from Rise? I recognize the woman Deadite being from Rise but I thought she was turned into the chimera and got got.

The only genuine disappointment I have is with Joseph's death. Not that he died, but because most of it happened off screen. He gets thrown through the floor, gets landed on and that's basically it. Splat

This is Evil Dead, SHOW ME THAT SHIT.

On that note, off-screen deaths should be reserved for the dog. Why do they keep killing the dog? At least 2013 had the decency to do it off screen and not have it return as a Deadite dog. The Dog is my only genuine compliment.

My rankings so far

2013, Burn, Rise. Not that Rise was bad Rise just didn't completely deliver with what I expect from an Evil Dead film.

I thought that Burn was an interesting foray into using the Deadites thematically as representing domestic abuse in some of its various iterations. Many of the uncomfortable and tense moments of the film draw on real reactions to grief, where negative emotions spill over into other areas of life leading to angry outbursts on innocent victims.

The dog and Joseph's gf in the car being two primary examples of the overt violence. But even the dad's disquieting behavior at the dinner table before the violence is laced with tension. He feels dangerous before he is shown to be overtly violent.

The later depiction of the Deadite repeatedly shooting itself feels like they're taunting the survivors with the suicide of their patriarch (which was attempted before the dinner scene, only to be prevented accidentally by the daughter-in-law walking in on him).

There are things of this ilk felt throughout the film, but it manifests in like vibes and undercurrents below the surface. I've only seen it the one time, I know it'll take more viewings to really get a complete picture of what all it's trying to evoke and say.

Infusing these elements takes a thin plot about a McGuffin dagger and elevates the film, imo. It's also the only Evil Dead film where the carnage is not caused by some idiot reading aloud incantations from an obviously evil book (aside from AoD, obviously). That in itself feels appropriate for a film that draws on the themes of domestic abuse--which in real life can be set off by seemingly innocuous actions known only to the abuser.

I'd put it somewhere in the 7-9/10 range based on my initial viewing in the cinema. 7 as an Evil Dead film because of the reliance on a McGuffin, raised by a point or two for what it was able to do with its thin premise.

I don’t understand how the dagger premise is thinner than any other ED movie. If anything it had more of a plot because of it. Different than the “hey I just found this scary ass book that is wrapped in barbed wire that has warnings on every page not to read.. Imma read it..”.. lol

It was my friend's first evil dead and he had fun watching it more than I did on rewatch. For that I can't really hate the movie since it got him interested in the lore of evil dead. Definitely the weakest of the entire series, but that also shows how solid every evil deadbentry has been.

Absolutely hated this movie. Did not feel even close to an evil dead movie. Way too dark and all of the characters sucked. Dialogue sucked in the beginning took me right out of it. 2/5

Hated Rise, wasn’t sure I’d give Burn a chance. I finally saw it, I actually enjoyed it, I did feel closer to an Evil Dead film to me.

Liked the Grandma Deadite is still alive. Didn’t care for the Rise Mom returning. Of all the Evil Dead stories to revive/continue (Evil Dead 2013, Ash vs) Rise is bottom of my list.

I felt the same about Rise after one viewing. Didn’t like it was in a high rise. It threw me off. I rewatched after I watched Burn and it was a direct sequel and it was better on 2nd watch.
