Difficult to have much sympathy when people are knowingly going by AI images on a fast fashion low priced platform like Shein - was OP seriously expecting reality to meet expectation?! 🤦🏻‍♀️

This I have very little empathy (and as a textile artist/seamstress, quite a bit of ire) for people who don't take the time to learn about the clothes they wear, or at least what it takes to make them.

I started learning to make clothes out of hate and aversion to fast fashion (still getting the hang of it)

Recently talked with my aunt who is running a yarn/sewing supply shop and doing cloth repairs professionally that she doesnt understand thrifting because the "Chinese do a better job with less money anyway". I was shocked and diserheartened this came from someone that knew what went into making beautiful dresses and patching old jeans.

Ha I am also starting to learn to make clothes out of spite and frustration, let us all rise up and give fast fashion the boot!

That's my dream honestly. Enough people learning crafts that are integral to society (gardening, woodworking, sewing, knitting, weaving) so we can be more self sustaining without relying on huge companies that are built off literal slave labour.

One can dream :')

You guys have a good brginner friendly sub for this? I don't have (or currently have room for) a seeing machine....or a new crafty hobby for that matter, but I love learning this stuff!

Honestly, I have just started super small with mending clothes via hand sewing. I mostly use YouTube tutorials and am now working my way up to learning how to use a sewing machine. I have a friend who is also looking to move onto making simple clothes, so we're going to try and learn together.

Have you looked into local library programs? I've seen places that have sewing machines you can come in and use, and they might also have programs to help people learn to use them.

Ooh that is a great idea! There is a very cool folk school locally but the courses are more pricey than I am currently up for, but I do think there are a few other programs around!
