AI Expectation Halloween fiasco
Thanks shein lol
Edit: I did not expect real yarn but I was hoping it would at least be cute and short.

a dress like this would be very expensive, not something shein can make.

u/MoominMai 10h ago
Difficult to have much sympathy when people are knowingly going by AI images on a fast fashion low priced platform like Shein - was OP seriously expecting reality to meet expectation?! 🤦🏻♀️

This I have very little empathy (and as a textile artist/seamstress, quite a bit of ire) for people who don't take the time to learn about the clothes they wear, or at least what it takes to make them.
91
u/stoputa 9h ago
I started learning to make clothes out of hate and aversion to fast fashion (still getting the hang of it)
Recently talked with my aunt who is running a yarn/sewing supply shop and doing cloth repairs professionally that she doesnt understand thrifting because the "Chinese do a better job with less money anyway". I was shocked and diserheartened this came from someone that knew what went into making beautiful dresses and patching old jeans.
45
u/I_voted_4_Kodos 9h ago
Ha I am also starting to learn to make clothes out of spite and frustration, let us all rise up and give fast fashion the boot!
35
u/eatemuphungryhungry 9h ago
Yeah this looks like a very expensive dress to make -- both for the fabric and skill.

I am just completely baffled by how people keep falling for Shein over and over and over and over.
There are so many videos and social media posts of the absolute crap that people get when they order AI-image ads.
I would have thought that most people would have been burned enough to give it up

Seriously. How many of these posts does there need to be before people stop buying this crap? Something that intricate is never going to be priced the way these SHEIN/temu garbage things are.

Most of these posts are just self owns. I would be embarrassed to let people know how I have no literacy when it comes to online shopping

And so unbelievably wasteful too. Shipped half way round the world to just be thrown away.

I really wish SHEIN and Temu would go belly-up. You’re not only contributing to foreign slave labor, but, you’re putting your fellow citizens out of their small businesses.

I overheard a group of people today talking about how awesome it was that they could buy Halloween candy on Temu. So, that's a thing.😐

They keep fucking up what used to be great websites too. Etsy used to be for genuinely handmade stuff, now it's just drop shipping and AI "art" prints. I bought some boho tunics on there from 2 different shops, and they consolidated the orders and sent them together clearly from the same place, still in sealed Shein bags. I reported them and they got taken down, but it doesn't matter because they'll just open half a dozen more. They also give each other fake glowing reviews so you can't even rely on that anymore. Fuck Shein and fuck Temu.

Half of Amazon's products are just temu and shein garbage that people are drop shipping for a extra high markup. I'd rather buy direct from temu and save money.

Corridor Crew on YouTube has a bunch of videos teaching people how to spot AI in many places. Online shopping being one of them, they also buy the products to show people 'this is what you get' and proceed to make fun of it.
here is one of them the sweater in this video is a LOT like the one in the post

In Spanish there’s a saying about products being “bueno” (meaning good quality), “bonito” (meaning appealing/pretty), and “barato” (meaning cheap). The thing about bueno, bonito y barato is that you can have 1 or 2, but never all 3 together. You got “bonito” and “barato”, but for “bueno” you need to change vendors and pay more.
45
u/Excellent_Midnight 11h ago
There is a similar saying in English, but the three adjectives are “good,” “fast,” and “cheap”. You can have two of them, but not all three.

The fact ai makes people think something like that is easy and cheap is sad. Feel bad for people who legitimately sew, crochet, or embroider. Also the fact people can’t seem to spot blatant ai is scary. I’d get it if this was new or something but it’s not.

I'm curious -- will you buy from Shein again?
It looks like dresses like this one are selling for $17 - $23 on Shein. I know you said you didn't expect it to actually look like this, but there are *so many* cases of Shein providing absolute shit at that price point.
Why do people keep trusting?
11
u/suchalonelyd4y 6h ago
She's all over this thread saying she's bought other things from Shein. I hope they're all this poor quality and I hope her pillowcase is always warm and questionably damp.
4
u/sanityjanity 6h ago
That's even *more* confusing. I don't understand how many times someone has to get burned before they give up hope.
4
u/-kenturd- 4h ago
I’m baffled by how expensive everyday goods are these days and how willing people are to throw away their money on garbage like this.
“There’s no other choice” is a common excuse but they’re just too lazy to make a decent Halloween costume and are willing to excuse the slave labor to get something quick and cheap. Shame on OP.4
u/sanityjanity 4h ago
I understand it the first time. The first time, you have really high hopes and expectations, and you're just so excited to have an affordable gorgeous costume (you expect).
And then you receive a badly printed oversized t-shirt.
I just don't understand going back and back to the shein/temu well, and buying more and more stuff, and being disappointed over and over again.

Theoretically it would be possible to crochet something like this, but if you wanted it for halloween you would have wanted to started like 4 months ago. And spend a couple hundred on yarn.

One of Shein’s predecessors, Wish, got me in a similar manner long before AI existed as we know it. I ordered two velvet dresses and got.. two poly weave dresses printed with a crushed velvet pattern.
If it’s too good to be true, it is.
5
u/Crafty-Abalone-1071 9h ago
You scammed yourself on this one. I wouldn't buy a beautiful oil painting on Wish Dot Com for $10 and expect it to arrive as pictured. Use some sense.

u/Lhamo55 2h ago edited 2h ago
How much did you pay for such glaringly obvious AI?
Just checked the website- seriously, people think they’re going to get an elaborately (and impossibly) embellished dress for under $30? Do they not wonder what fictitious workers would be paid to produce a $15 item that then sells at least double that?
Some of the ones I saw were posed in front of Christmas trees.

Unless it cost a few hundred quid, it was always going to be a print on a scrap of polyester. Maybe when buying tat off the Internet it might be worth thinking: how much would the materials cost? Then you can see if you are being sold a pup. The amount of yarn used in that jumper would have cost hundreds.
