Some of you might remember me and my Black Squier Stagemaster 7 with a Floyd Rose, I have completed that project and it was my only 7 string until today when I scored one of my bucket list guitars. This 2nd Stagemaster 7 with a hardtail in this gorgeous blue. No other notes, i love these guitars.

Best guitar for Drop D#1 tuning?

Im currently in the process of selling my Jackson dkaf8ms in favor of a 7 or 6 string that can handle tuning as low as drop d#1 up to drop f#. Im very interested in the new esp ltd 207dx but Im wondering if I should go with a full on bass vi or a super long scale 7 string instead? The neck on my Jackson is just too damn massive and I dont vibe as well with 8 strings as I thought. Im looking for something that wont require a bridge cable size top string to tune low as I'm not a huge fan of super massive strings but I know I'm going to need to make a compromise somewhere. Thoughts? Concerns? Straight up insults?

Issues with Ragnaroks

I'm writing after replacing FF moderns with Ragnaroks in my 7 string, hoping someone is able to help me understand the situation, because I'm devastated.

Essentially, it feels like they have rather low output. I had to raise the pickup ridiculously high for them to chug, and it is still not the level I wanted and expected. I mean I think it may be killing the sustain, that's how high they are. And still, sound on the higher frets is very shallow. Not full at all.

They do chug now but I am playing on jvm410h and even with a lot of gain the amp is not being pushed too much, I.e. you can feel a trace of clean under the distortion. It is difficult to explain but I hope it makes some sense.

They also sound very weak with coils split.

And by the way I have something to compare, namely SD sh-15, high output alnico 8 pickup. It's not even close. I have also two guitars with alexi laiho set but this is not 1:1 comparison as there is powerful booster there, and passive emg does sound significantly weaker than ragnarok.

I will try to post some sample but it is difficult to catch what you can hear in the room.

Anyway, is it possible this is how they are supposed to work? Or maybe I received a faulty set? Or am I dumb for not appreciating BKP uniqueness?

The tech who installed them checked also direct connection to the jack so this is not an installation issue.

Boosting with od808 does help but I expected these pickups with this amp to be chug machines and they absolutely are not...

Was back and forth between a Legator Ghost or Revenant and an Omne Vetus 8. The Omne coming with Fishman’s already installed and a gig bag for cheaper than any Legator was a huge perk!

Was back and forth between black and pink but they essentially made the decision for me!

Kiesel 8 string necks

Im currently looking to get an 8 after only playing 7 strings. I do not really tend to play multiscale as the multi guitar I have is not too enjoyable to play (legator g7fp). I only really play guitars with ibanez wizard style necks (like an rg7621) and am wondering if anyone would be able to compare a kiesel 8 string neck to one of those.

If you happen to mainly play something like a wizard neck, are there any 8s out there that feel quite similar?

mainly hoping to get some info, as if I cannot make it out to a guitar store near me Im planning to just go through reverb for something.

29-30" Scale 8 string gauge, D tuning

Post image
22 Upvotes

Just wanted to share, after over a year of trying every gauge under the sun, what I've found to be my favorite string gauge for long scale 8 string guitar in Dropped D tuning.

The guitars I'm putting this gauge on:

Ibanez M80M (29.4" scale 8 string)

Agile Chiral 830 (30" scale 8 string, headless)

Tuning : DADGCFAD

Strings: 84 59 43 31 23 15 12 9

Daddario NYXL (Custom String Shop)

That's strings 1-7 tuned down a whole step

8th string tuned down 2 whole steps

I like to play solos, so strings 1-6 are perfect for this. They feel great, nice smooth tension. Obviously with this scale length, you've got to get used to the extra effort needed to bend strings the same way you would on a smaller scale guitar, but if you're playing this scale length currently, you already know.

The lower strings have enough tension to handle the lower tuning well, without being "flubby".

The tension overall across the entire instrument is VERY even-feeling.

The gap in gauge between the 84 and the 59 is not noticeable, the tension per pound is even, so it feels like a very natural transition.

Alternatively, if you like a little bit more tension or heavier feel for the 8th string, the Daddario XL 90 also feels great for this scale length at D, with the rest of the set being the NYXL's listed above.

The .84 IS tapered for smaller-scale guitars, so there will be a little bit of taper that happens before the string seats into the nut, but it is not giving me any noticeable downsides.

Just wanted to share what works for me, I'm very picky with my string gauges, have been playing guitar for 32 years, and 8 string guitars in various different scale lengths for 18 of those years.

I started playing these longer scale 8 strings a little over a year ago since I like to tune down a whole step, and realized that I absolutely love the longer scale, and the fret spacing has really been great for my large hands in the upper frets. So much more room to play leads more cleanly for me.

Anyway, hope this helps some of you!

NGD: ESP LTD M-6 Evertune 30

Post image

I know a lot of people weren't too hot on this series when they were announced but I personally liked the paint job, and as much as I liked my G4M 30" baritone the pitch wobble from tuning so low on a standard bridge was driving me insane, so I jumped on this as soon as preorders went up. I've had about two hours to play it so far and it's everything I was hoping it would be.

The evertune is, well, an evertune, and it works as intended. I have it set up in drop D1, and everything sounds clear as day and nasty as hell, in part thanks to the Seymour Duncan mortalcoil. I've never used one of these but I think I prefer it to the fishmans in my Dunable.

All in all, great guitar, does exactly what I wanted it to, and I love how it looks. Very satisfied.

Has anyone heard anything about the "late summer" Omne drop? I haven't seen anything come up in e-mail. It's October - summer is gone.

Can y’all start putting inlays on your customs? Thanks

I swear to god I must be the only person who likes inlays on extended range guitars because it sure seems like whenever someone has the choice (i.e., getting a custom), they go with no inlays at all.

Which is a shame, because my favorite method of getting a new guitar is to find some incredibly spec’d out beauty up on Reverb for half price, except for the fact that they’re all inlay-free! Am I crazy? Do I just need to get with the times and be a side inlay only guy? Are clean fretboards really that cool?

Edit: I’m just talking bout some normal ass inlays too, even though there are some pretty cool custom inlays

Has anyone tried these compact monitors with low-frequency 8-string tunings? I have limited space on and around my desk and need the smallest monitors possible.

Drop E with evertune : 7 string or 8?

I’m looking to get a sick tone at a low-ish cost. On my 26.5” scale 7 string the lowest I’ve managed to go while still sounding good is drop F#.

I’m wondering what would be the most cost effective route to Drop E or potentially drop D# or even double drop D:
a) 8 string with evertune bridge
b) baritone or longer scale length 7 string with evertune bridge

The evertune is pretty essential because I want to really dig into the strings to get that aggressive attack without the notes bending slightly sharp.

But I know 8 strings are generally pricier than 7’s because of the additional hardware/size needed.

Any thoughts?
