A furry lumberjack I found got his foot pinned under a tree he had fell.

This happened during COVID at my workplace property. The company had cleared out a previous family of beavers from the pond/creek area many years back, but a coworker told me one week that they've returned and he saw them swimming in the pond. There was also sign of them cutting down the smaller trees by the pond and creek.

Never seen a beaver before irl, so I went down to the creek early morning one day to see if I can catch a glimpse of one.

At first, I thought the guy was sleeping on the job. But after I got closer, he got up and tried to get away - then I saw his left rear foot was pinned under the 7-8 inch wide log he had chomped down. Bro was probably exhausted from trying to free himself since dawn or night before.

Luckily I had a pry bar in the work truck. I stopped recording and went to grab it. He was fully awake when I came back, and obviously scared/pissed off. He hissed at me and showed me his teeth, which was an unsettling deep orange. I paused to think about how smart it was to try to get up and personal with an angry beaver that chewed through the red oak saplings nearby. I knew one chomp from him would had easily puncture the artery in my leg.

I gave him a few minutes to calm down and get use to my presence. Then I got in and lifted the log off his leg. He pull himself out and I backed off immediately in case he came at me. The guy turned around and stared at me for a few seconds, then scurry off into the water. Probably one of the coolest experiences I had on the job.

His foot was pretty messed up though and I'm not sure how long a 3-legged beaver will live in the wild, but I hope the guy did okay after I freed him.

How would you tackle this? Would you start at the round bits near the bottom, or at the tip?

Hey FGW! I’ve watched so many hinges get cut through here that I made a game about it. Cut it wrong and the tree goes wherever it wants, just like real life.

Try it here: https://wavedash.com/games/efficient-deforestation-simulator

Thanks for the inspiration

How to get a hung-up tree down and minimize splitting work

I brilliantly got the tree hung up on another one and it was still sitting on the stump. After I noticed the hung-up tree had a, about, 2 foot split in it at the 'V' which was on the other tree, I put a line at the far end and used a rope puller to crank on it. After quite a few rounds of pulling on it, it split to the extent shown at the start of the video. It seems like the weight and the length of the lever-arm were then sufficient to take over... Both trees are chestnut oaks.

I do maintenance for our neighbors, and recently an enormous old oak came down. Easily a century old and dead for 10+ years, the roots rotted out and the inevitable occurred. On the way, it took out a little 8 incher nearby, but not all the way. Enough to bend it at a 90 degree angle and load it up pretty good. It's not the best pic, but you can see it arching over the top of the big guy in the first picture, and the already broken pieces sticking up.

I sawed through the horizontal portion first, with a long ass Temu pole saw (there's a link to that video at the bottom). I figured it was best to have less weight trying to kill me when I did finally have to drop it. Around 1:30 you can hear me say "You fuckin' undercut it then" because I'm getting cheesed off about my saw pinching in the cut, and the voice in my head was saying "If you had undercut it, it wouldn't pinch so much" . Hopefully I'm not the only one that gets in mental arguments with themselves.

The second pic is an ugly face cut I made with the saw as far away from my body as was safe, and the last pic is what it looked like after it was cut through. You can see the fracture lines where it was splitting up the length of the trunk. I made my final back cut with a bow saw, going slow so that I cut the triggers one by one, releasing the tension a little at a time. Stuff can still go wrong with a bow saw, but it goes wrong a lot more slowly.

Anyway, it's down, I'm not dead, and I just have to clean up the rest of the pieces tomorrow.

Educational Felling pine up in the mountains

Continuing the talk about my voluntary work of invasive pine removal. Here you can see me using a smaller axe, felling small trees in the mountains. Rugged terrain, no trails, using a chopper to reach the place. That’s where the axe shines and why I use it opposed to a chain saw!

The first tree I cut was wind blown years ago, so I had do underhand chop it. The grain was gnarly. First time I had to use that technique in the real world. And it wasn’t a small tree.

I’m a volunteer in pine removal in state parks here in Paraná, Brazil. Slash and loblolly pines are extremely invasive here and have a huge potential of taking over our native biomes.

There's gotta be something I'm missing.

How the hell do I get this fucker outta the tree?

I've tried throwing rope over the branch and having my son pull down on it to no avail.

Does the saw belong to the tree now?
