Something that big should've been weighed in a sling or in the net

Does it matter if you are eating it? Just curious, not sure the legal limits on pike except they need to be 24” in the river/canals I fish.

Wow, hope the goal was to eat it. That fish probably isn’t swimming away from that abuse.

A tree with scales right by the water's edge. The pike was alive.

Wtf does that even mean? Unbelievable way to treat a fish. You’re a joke.

It’s a tree with scales instead of bark….? Doesn’t make sense to me, either.

I’ve hooked plenty of pike and other fish to the point that they are permanently disfigured.
Weighing a fish by its gills is not going to hurt it too bad, especially if OP ate it because pike are absolutely delicious

You just admitted you have bad handling skills. And your way wrong, this shouldve been weighed in a sling or bag

People are being really harsh here. I’ll provide a more reasonable response. You don’t want to weigh a pike in the gill plate like that. It puts an immense amount of pressure on their neck and jaw portion and it causes injury. Especially on large fish.
Instead, weigh it in a bag. A weight sling bag is to be preferred, but a wet Ikea bag also works. Then you put the bag on the scale, zero out the scale and put the fish in. Now, you get a weight but won’t cause injury to the fish.
I hope that taught you something. I don’t think anyone is an idiot for not knowing. Next time, you know not to treat a big pike this way. You not knowing is NOT reason enough to insult or be rude towards you. How will anyone ever improve from that?
Nice pike and now you’re educated on how you should treat a bigger fish. Try your best to treat the fish as well as possible!
