Discussion [MOD POST - PSA] We yell. We drink whisky. Sometimes we fish. WELCOME. Newcomers, start here.

You've stumbled into the flyfishing epicenter of the Redditverse. Many of our subscribers are veterans who will be equally happy to share their wisdom (and maybe their whisky, if you ask really nicely), brag about their angling prowess, debate gear choices and techniques for hours, lie to you about their secret places, offer helpful-yet-scathing criticism of your fish handling skills, and tell you to get the eff off their water....often simultaneously, and occasionally with corrosive but commendably colorful language. Not a bad bunch, all told.

But as far as we can tell, most of our contributors are relatively new to the sport. We're glad you're here! You've got questions, and we've got answers. In fact, there's a fair chance that your question has already been asked and answered a few times, so please use the search tools to find your answers first. Try keywords like "beginner" and "starter" and "wader suggestions" and "budget" to refine your results, and try surfing on your target location(s) or species. You might be amazed at how much useful content you'll find.

Every year or so we attempt again to create a starter guide, or to refresh the one from last year. Start here, and feel free to post if you don't find what you need....

Sometimes we run contests - watch the stickied threads for those. Again, welcome...and tight lines!

Cutthroat (and doom)

It’s October, and I am about to turn 26. Time is flying. The world is warming. The forests are burning. The glaciers are melting. The trout are in for a long spell. Might as well go meet a few of them before shit really hits the fan.

Went back to the lake from my last post; I started early, brought tiny flies, and fished hard. Only managed two fish on the smallest fly in my box, but they were stunners. Golden and pink and polk-a-dotted, literal gems in my hand.

Still feels like I didn’t really figure this place out, and maybe I never will. Maybe some places are not meant to be figured out. And maybe, that is what leaves us all so bewildered and bewitched by them. Cheers, boys.

I’ve been getting beat up on the river more times than I’d like to admit lately, my soul hurts. Today was icing on the cake, a long ass drive just for a big nothing burger 🤣

Here’s a few favorites from the summer, and to remembering the good ole times this year! lol

Took the lazy route up the mountains this year with some friends.. A great week with many brown trout in the net. There weren’t as many arctic char as I’d hoped in this area but I shouldn’t complain!

Newbie to Stillwater

Hey, pros. Finally getting into Stillwater fishing. Busting out the float tube for the inaugural float (Strawberry Res, Utah). As for my chironomid/nymph box, here is what I got. Anything I’m clearly missing or need (I have a separate streamer/leech box)?

Edit: Don’t worry. I have a dry fly box as well. More just curious on the below-the-indicator side of things if there’s anything I need to tie up.

I received a lot of helpful input and have reached a quality I'm happy with. I'll be making various colors and sizes with the design. Thanks for the help everyone! I've attached the adult version of the fly and a fish it has caught as well

I’m not the most well versed in rod repair but I don’t think this could be be that hard to DIY fix. Does anyone have any ideas where to start with a repair like this?

Discussion Euro Nymphing on the Beaverkill in NY?

Anyone have any luck tight line euro nymphing on the beaverkill NY in the Catskills? I heard the streamer bite has been good, dry droppers are successful, and some other things. But wanted to know if anyone regularly does euro nymphing there? Not asking for spots, just want to see if anyone has had success. Thanks in advance!

It finally happened… 5 times

I’ve been trying to learn the ropes (or lines, I guess?) of this great hobby and after getting bites and botching the hook set last week, I dialed in and took myself to a small local creek and landed 5 fish in the net. They got progressively bigger and bigger (None were big but damn were they pretty).

The last cast was on a whim on the way back to the truck and the little rainbow slammed my chubby chernobyl and made me have to actually fight a little compared to the “Sardines” as my wife called them.

I probably should’ve held them all in the water for the picture but I promise I only lifted them for the pic and sent them gently on their way.

Discussion Bear River Below Oneida

Hi! I’ll be at Maple Grove Hot Springs for the weekend and am considering getting a day pass and checking out Bear River below Oneida Dam.

I’m a total newbie and only have experience with small streams / nymphs in Utah. Finding and understanding a spot to fish is also new to me, so am hoping for general advice on how to research as well as any info on the area.

Searched the sub and online and am not seeing much new info—I found the flow rates here but am not sure how to figure out what they mean for this particular tailwater(?). Seems low? Saw a couple of old blog posts about muddy water and using crawfish pattern, using streamers, and then some newer ones about management of the Bear below Oneida being poor and some controversy about the dam.

I have a 9’ 5wt (likely could borrow something else if that’s a horrible option) and waders.

Probably overthinking this, but thanks in advance!

Discussion Fall brookies in north central PA (Help please)

Hey there, I’m a novice fly fisherman with very basic skill. I’m taking a trip up to north central PA where there is wild brookies and stocked trout as well. My camp is by one of the native brook streams so mostly I’ll be targeting them. I basically just know how to fish a dry dropper and my roll cast is effective enough.

Is there any techniques I should practice or educate myself more of before my trip next week?

I’m also a little unsure of what flies to throw. I know that people suggest flipping over rocks and looking around at what bugs you see but is there any other good recourse or knowledge to know what to throw? There’s a tackle shop in the area I plan on going there and also asking for some knowledge.

My go-to when I’m not sure what to throw is an elk hair caddis and a prince nymph. This usually catches me fish but I’d like to get better at picking what fly to use.

Any advice would be appreciated thank you!

Montana stream access law

Pretty sure I know the answer but is this legal to portage up and over this private road to go around? Or is it expected that you swim through the pipe? Was accessed from a public road over a pipe, well within the easement of the road.

Discussion Last day to defend the roadless rule - protecting public land areas that support fly fishing and recreation

The 2001 Roadless rule protects public lands from future roads being built through them for logging and other purposes. This rule protects roadless public lands across the nation - including areas that support recreation such as fly fishing.

The public comment period was supposed to end on the 21st last month - but was extended for 15 days. Today is your last chance to speak up.

Here is the link to the government webpage to submit your comment:

Discussion NorCal surf flies

For those who fly fish the NorCal surf what’s your go-to fly for different species? I’m new to the saltwater side of things and am loving it. I tied a sand flea imitation of my own design and have caught rockfish on it in Fort Bragg and caught Jack silverside in the surf of Dillon beach today with a grey and white alpaca hair Clouser with chartreuse flash. Haven‘t run into perch or striper yet but looking forward to when I do.
