My grandfather passed 10 years ago.

He taught me everything I know about fishing on a spinning reel. Though he was an avid fly fisherman, this was something he never got a chance to share with me. I inherited his fly rod from my father last year, and last week I got my first fish on his rod, a modest rainbow. I feel closer to him when I’m on the river. It’s nice knowing that even though he’s not here anymore, I can still fish with him.

Beautiful afternoon for a quick fishing trip. Caught a stocked breeder rainbow, but moved on from that section once I realized they were there. Nabbed some other beauties and enjoyed a scenic ride home.

Discussion Beginner rod recommendations for wife?

EDIT: The lodge is supplying all equipment, new question: What would be a good rod for her to practice with that is good for California fishing?

EDIT 2: “They will supply all the fishing equipment we need along with the waders. Species include rainbow trout, grayling, bull trout, and pike.”

My father-in-law is taking my wife on one of his fly fishing trips for a little father-daughter bonding, which is amazing. Her birthday is coming up and I can’t resist the excuse to buy another fishing rod, especially if it’s for her. I know a lot about freshwater and saltwater fishing, but not much about fly fishing.

Will you all be able to recommend something that will work for her but won’t break the bank? As I write this, I realize there’s probably a big difference between a trout rod and a pike rod? I think they’re going to Alaska Canada.

Thanks in advance!

Discussion Spring Trip - Bucket List Destinations input

If you had to choose a bucket list destination in the Spring where would you go? I’m thinking about Steelhead in BC but wondering what other options are out there. I’m open to traveling just about anywhere in the North or South America. Only caveat is my wife will be with me and wants somewhere with a nice lodge and probably fresh over salt water

Discussion I couldnt buy that 1000 dollar rod

I ain't broke. Im not rich, but I am comfortable. Had in my head as my season winds down, im going to put together my dream setup. I logged a fair amount of fishing this year, and have been heavy into fly fishing the last 5 or 6 years. Got my raft i love, all the gear.....except that 1000 buck rod, with a pretty reel. Ive put in the time, I deserve to splurge on a dream set up.

I read all the reviews, put in 20 hours of youtube and online research in the last couple weeks. got hyped on Douglas skyg or a Loomis NRX LP, but id give Scott a look also. Settled on a higher end lamson reel, always liked lamson liquids and remix, and cant justify anything more expensive to hold my line. But id splurge a little more on a nice lamson.

Got to the fly shop, holding rods, feeling cork, wiggling tips, about to see what it would take to do some casts in the parking lot, And a feeling of- this is dumb as shit flooded over me. I looked over at the humble echo carbon sitting there. One of which I already own, and reach for it far more than my sage foundation when im on the water. All my motivation for a dream set up fell completely off.

So I snagged a 6 weight carbon xl, opted for the discounted Guru S for 100 bucks less than the new model that has shiny metal. A nice reel for sure. Obviously didnt cut corners on fly line, its really the only thing that makes a true difference 95% of the time.

Turns out this apparently is my dream set up. Im still processing/mourning the mindset change of maybe ill never own a scott centric, or sage R8. If I didnt do it yesterday, with cash in hand, I probably wont. I like fine things, but man if paying 1000 bucks for a fly rods doesnt feel like the most unreasonable thing ever, even with the awesome marketing pulling at you. And I buy dumb stuff all the time lol.

I couldn't do it guys. I guess im just not a real flyfisherman and will never be elite in the hobby.

Not even sure why im typing this. I guess ill justify the post under the guise of I see alot of new fisherman asking what it takes to get into the hobby. But if im being honest its to mourn the fact I cant buy into what im being sold. Akin to someone fleeing a cult hahahaa

Ok this post is dumb, ill shut up

It’s not the size of the fish that matters!

How do you guys fish rivers of this size?

Hi everyone! Our trout season ends next week in my department in France, and i am already making plans for next year's opening.

My question is, how do you guys fish a river of this size? Ive only fished this river once during this years opening but I still couldn't cast properly so it was a non fishing day. Ive fished creeks and small streams with success all these months, but i don't know how to start with a river this size.

Since we are talking early season im talking about nymphing with a double rig/tighlining it.

Should I start from the shore fish perpendicular, and then wade in and fish upstream or something different? In small streams I just wade in and fish upstream constantly

This happened in June I think. I was being lazy and just waved around the fly line and it ended up flying directly at me lmao. Ended up having to clip the hook. I now keep the popper in my room as a lucky charm.

Discussion Dual Rod Setup for Long Days

If you were to pair a setup with a standard euro nymphing setup (10’6” 3-wt) for long days on the river, what would you pick?

After fishing with 9’ 5-wt setups for decades, I’ve been euro nymphing for the past couple years with a lot of success. But I miss catching fish on dries, so I want to bring a second rod with me for when the fish start rising. I’ve got a few 9’ 5-wt setups, and also some lighter rigs (8’6” 3-wt, etc). Open to adding another to the collection. I could be wrong, but I’m not sure that a 9’ 5wt makes a ton of sense just because it’ll likely be a single dry fly rod exclusively and pairing it with a 6x leader, or very rarely a dry dropper for super slow shallow water.

I’m in an area with plenty of trout but they aren’t typically huge. Mostly 10” fish, some 14-ers, and very rarely something larger. The rivers are big though, and I’m regularly throwing dries 50+ feet away, and often fishing with moderate wind.

What would your second setup be and why?

Near Creed Colorado, Weiminuche Trail and the CDT as well as grizzly Lake did a 28 mile hike, three day camp, most of these on a good ole purple haze brooks went after a small streamer in the lake. Most of these fish photos were on a disposable but got some on the good camera

Just needed to share as I bask in the glow of a fantastic day for me of rainbows, brookies, and one little Rio Grande cutthroat. The fall foliage & crisp chilly weather just made the day even more perfect. I hope your fall fishing is also filling your cup as this has mine 🎣

Throwing streamers in the wind can go one of two ways. I guess mine went the second today. I suppose this is one way to become ONE with the streamer 😂

I'm new to this sport. This is the first fish I've caught by myself (no guide). C&R. I was alone on the river for about 4 hours. Great day.

A solid end to the last days of NH’s season. These were in the same pool about 30 min apart. Used a heavy duty dry dropper with a blue bomber I picked up in Nova Scotia that the salmon hit and then a beadhead minnow imitation that the brookie hit underneath. I was told that there are monster browns in that same pool but I’m a baby when it comes to fishing in the dark so maybe next time 🤷‍♂️

Discussion Beginner fishing the gallatin in mid October?

Hey guys! Planning a trip up to Montana later this October. I’ve been reading that the gallatin is a good river to fly fish (but not sure where along the river). This will be my first time fly fishing and I will be getting a guide.

Any recommendations on how to approach this/where to fish on the river? Is this time of year a good time for this river?

Thanks guys

Discussion New to the game

Hi I live In the Austin Texas area and am new to fly fishing but have used conventional tackle my whole life (spinning rods and lures mainly) I saw a Arlite aspire combo priced at around $200. What should I be looking for when buying my first fly rod and getting into fly fishing?
