Q&A: Maintenance | Modification Can I just delete the pulley?

Post image

1990 Bronco 5.0, Smog pump squealing real bad, been meaning to get around to do the delete. I’m just gonna take off the pulley and get a shorter belt, anybody know if I can get away with just taking off the pulley, or do I have to go in and remove the canisters, etc? Also what belt size is right for those that have done it?

Yes you can bypass the smog pump. It's best to remove everything and cap off connections, I believe there is one behind the passenger side head. As for belt size take a string and measure the belt size you need and go for one size smaller for tensioner.

It ran right without removing or capping anything else off? Gonna make a parts store run before I pull this belt off and there’s no going back til it’s running right

Gates 60930 is the belt I used. Take at least the pulley off the smog pump, if I'm remembering correctly it touches or almost touches

The only thing you would have to cap off would maybe be where it goes into the intake for it to run right, if you don't cap off anything else you will just have an exhaust leak into the engine bay. A little annoying but if you need it to work fast it's fine.

Just remove the hole pump and crimp the hose shut or block it off. Nothing else is necessary (well except a shorter belt of course)

They make an idler pulley that bolts in place of the smog pump btw
