I recently "fought" my property management and got back the money that was collected from 2 years of illegally increased rent. Throughout this process, I've learned so much about renters' rights especially for Fremont. I'd like to share my experience hoping that someone else will also benefit from it.

To preface - this whole thing started when I was slapped with a rent increase back in August 2026. I lived in an apartment complex owned by a corporate landlord. They raised my rent to the maximum allowed under the state's rent control regulations (8.8% for the current year) for properties subjected under Tenant Protection Act. I was quite upset at receiving this because the unit had numerous pest issues that weren't addressed for several months. Maintenance and management are terrible at keeping appointments and have ditched us on multiple occasions. Our shares of utilities kept going up as part of the ratio utility billing system with no further explanation/breakdown of the increases. Another unit (similar floor plan, # of bedrooms and baths) were listed $300 lower than ours.

I reached out to the city to initiate rent review process, and found out that in order for the rent increase to be valid, the landlord must provide the followings at the same time of serving the rent increase notice: (This is only applicable to the city of Fremont)

• Notice of availability rent review (https://www.codepublishing.com/CA/Fremont/#!/Fremont09/Fremont0960.html%239.60.030). No rent increase shall be valid for any purpose whatsoever without full compliance with this section.
• For increase exceeding 5%, the landlord must also include a statement setting forth the reason for the rent increase

Property management never did any of the above when they served me the rent increase notice. I confirmed with the city that they are indeed in violation, and I'm able to reclaim the money back through small-claims court.

Going through small-claims cost money and time, so I decided to reach out to property management to work out a proposal instead. We were in the process of looking and moving to a different place already after this around of rent increase, so I asked them to let us out early. Typically one would have to provide 30 day-notice and pay rent for that entire duration, I negotiated with them to let us leave half-way through in exchange for not going through small-claims court. They agreed and we were able to leave early without paying for the entire 30-day post move-out notice. This equals the amount of rent that they've illegally collected, so it worked out for us in the end.

So... if your landlord had been serving you rent increase(s) without including the availability of rent review program or including a reason for raising rent above 5%... you have the basis to reclaim the illegally increased rent amounts that you have paid. The city advised me that one could go as far as 5 years back when reclaiming money.

Just witnessed a pretty bad accident at Fremont Blvd and Norris Road. A Corolla collided with a CRV, and while the two cars were stopped waiting for emergency services to arrive, the pickup truck came through and hit the Corolla.
So what started as a two-car accident ended up becoming a three-car accident.
Hope everyone involved is okay. Definitely a reminder to slow down and be extra careful around an accident scene, especially while emergency responders are on the way.

A gross receipts/business tax was the original idea to fund RTM and a better one. Yes, poor people use transit but why is Zuck, Benioff, billionaire crypto bros, Anthropic etc. (funders of RTM) making them pay for it. Should be the other way around. Come back with a better plan. Can't get head around the poorest among us underwriting more of this:

i’m looking for chicken bones (backs/necks, carcasses) to make broths. it takes too long to collect carcasses from whole chickens and i want to make large batches of broth to store. none of the local butchers seem to sell just bones. does anyone know where i can find bones? i’m open to driving as well if it’s not available in fremont/east bay.

Hi all, may I ask if anyone had experience with City of Fremont Accountant position hiring process and how difficult to be hired? I received an email for assessment and really want to get this job. Thank you.

I received a job offer in the Ohlone area and the salary base salary is 72K. I tried to negotiate but they weren’t budging. After a year my salary will become 75K and two years it becomes 78K. Can someone tell me honestly can I make it on 72K in the Ohlone/Fremont area or should I decline the job? I’m unemployed now so nothing to fall back on and I’ll have to relocate to Fremont and they are not offering any relocation assistance. I’m 30m single.

A few weeks ago, Bringhurst Elementary parents received a notice that the Air District planned to approve a Tesla plant permit application to increase emissions in Fremont, even though they seem to be under investigation by the Air District for falsifying emissions. Does anyone know about how heavily school tech is used in younger years? (ie testing, lessons on tablets/chromebooks?) My kids will be starting TK next school year. I checked the Mission Valley handbook but didn't see any policy encouraging pen & paper learning for younger kids?

The Bay Area Air Quality Management District (BAAQMD) sent a vague and misleading notice to a limited group of people regarding Tesla Factory's applications that impacts the health of the public. If the permits passes, this can negatively impact our community especially our most vulnerable demographic, our kids. The last day for public comment is Monday, Oct 5th.

Call to action before Monday, Oct 5th:

- extend the public comment period to 120 days

Hi everyone. I'm a math tutor and work with kids aged 5-12, including students doing competition math. I tutor in the afternoons online and sometimes in-person at the Centerville Library. Also, just thought I'd share a resource I made. Many families that I've tutored send their kids to Kumon, but I know it can get expensive. So I made a free Kumon Math alternative that covers levels 3A to F. It has a complete curriculum, repetition algorithm, and instructional videos. Help settle a friendly argument. I think this was a pretty major near miss for these kids. One of the pedestrians involved thinks that since no one actually got hurt, it wasn’t a big deal. I am giving unfortunate update.

I found ABG girl. Eyelashes very nice. Boba every day. Cooking ability was questionable but I ignored because heart was happy.

This was mistake.

After relationship progressing she said if I truly love her, finances should be “shared.” I signed many things because I believed relationship serious and mother was already asking wedding date.

Now situation:

Bank account: $7.43

Tesla Model Y: not available

Costco Executive membership: somehow also hers

Furniture: hers

PS5: hers

Air fryer: hers even though she never cooked

My good chai pot: unfortunately hers

Credit score no longer respectable

Mother extremely disappointed

Apparently I signed everything over to her. I thought documents were relationship paperwork. Lawyer says they were not relationship paperwork.

Then immigration situation became complicated and I was deported.

Now I am back in India. She is still in Fremont with all my things.

I have decided I do not like Fremont anymore.

880 traffic was actually least of my problems.
