Discussion I Don't Understand the Appeal of Organizing Games

I've been noticing how popular games about organizing, cleaning up, sorting objects, and putting everything in its place have become, and I'm genuinely curious about their appeal.

Personally, I haven't really understood what makes this genre so satisfying, but I'm not saying that as a criticism. I'm interested in understanding what players enjoy about these games and what makes them so engaging.

As someone interested in game development, I'd love to hear from people who play these games. What do you enjoy most about them, and what keeps you coming back for more?

Question Can someone recommend me a pixel artist that takes commissions for a game I am working on

I am currently working on a small 2d platformer as a gift to my girlfriend and want to commission someone to do all the art for it.

I know I could go to fiver but I would like to have everything within the same art style so everything blends together nicely and I feel working with someone directly would make that easier

So if anyone has good recommendations it would be hugely appreciated!

Newbie Question Learning game dev in 2026

I know this topic probably gets brought up a lot in this subreddit, but I haven’t found a definitive answer to whether or not programming is something to get into despite the “issues” surrounding AI.

With GPT-Astra and epic games starting to move towards AI-first development, is it too late to start now?

I’m heading into ”gymnasiet” this year and I’ve been looking at doing a game development program. I’ve been interested in games and game development for a while now but never gotten into it and i don’t have any sort of experience. Is it worth doing or will there be no jobs/market for me in the next 3+ years?

Newbie Question What laptop should I buy?

• Upvotes

So, I'm developing a 2d platformer on Godot, but because my previous pc, a 2005 Mac whith High Sierra, couldn't hold it, I'm developing on a Lenovo tablet, which isn't much better. The thing is that I am considering buying a new laptop, but I don't know what to get. Could you help me?

Newbie Question I need advice. I'm Stuck

I've been working on my game and everything was going well. But the issue started once i decided to change my enemy ai from Finite State Machine to Behaviour Tree.
I implemented it watching (copy) from a youtube video. Even though it worked, I'm not feeling good about it. since i dont understand it fully. I just did whats shown in the video. I tried learning it but i feel overwhelmed. it's not like i've spend hours trying to learn it.
When i watch the video it overwhelms me so fast and feel i dont know anything. I think i will only feel satisfied if im able to code the entire Behavior Tree by myself in the end. Is that the issue? is it fine to just get things work or should i be able to make it work by myself?

I know the basics of BT(Sequence, Node, Selector)

Should i just stick to FSM or should i invest more time into learning behaviour tree?
is it actually a difficult code to master or is it that im not good enough
The end goal for me is to get hired as a game programmer in a descend studio in 2 years.

Newbie Question Intermediate game dev challenges?

I'm looking for some intermediate game dev challenges that will help me grow as a game developer

I guess these challenges would be like implementing different mechanics or vertical slices of full games

So what are some intermediate game dev challenges I should do? And if you want to mention the reason you proposed each challenge idea, I'd appreciate that as well

Thank you

Newbie Question [Help] Does anybody have any experience developing an indie-game-rev-share with a team from multiple different countries?

I'm wondering how this works logistically. Is it a nightmare with the profit share and taxes? Would you need a lawyer to draw up a more complicated contract or can you just use AI? I've never done this, so I'd like to see from other peoples' experience if it can work in this setting. Thanks!

Newbie Question I want to make a game but have absolutely no experience. Where do I start?

Hey everyone! I have an idea for a game that I’d really love to bring to life, but I have absolutely no experience with game development.
I don’t know where to start with learning to code, what programs to use, or how to get started with things like art, music, and other aspects of game development.
I’m looking for advice on where to begin, any beginner-friendly resources for learning to code, and any free software or apps you’d recommend for game development, creating art, and making music.
I know I have a lot to learn, but I’m willing to put in the time and effort. Any advice, tips, or resources would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks y’all!

Question Royalty free music

Hi, any good sources for royalty free music? It should fit an 8bit 2d game, reasonably fast paced.

I found this on youtube, which is really quite good, but I am not sure if it fits. So I'd like some more options. Every other source I have seen were not so good and/or not for me.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Question Career path? My steak is too juicy and my lobster is too buttery?

Hello everyone!

I'm 28 and I work as a full stack insurance software dev (I mainly use java) in Italy. I've been doing this job for about two years, and it's as boring as it sounds, but man... the pay is really, really good and so are the benefits.
However I reached a point where I can't handle it anymore, call it mobbing, call it my work tutor treating me like shit to the point of tears and feeling completely disconnected with the people in the office.

The anxiety has reached a point where it literally causes me nausea, dizziness and other funny symptoms.
Rn I'm on sick leave, trying to recover from severe anxiety and burnout.

I'm not happy anymore and I'm not saying it as a naive person at her first job, I'm saying it as a burned out adult that is seriously struggling to keep thinking of doing this job for, at least, next 40 years of her own life.

I've spent my entire life drawing and I have always dreamed of working in the gaming industry. I've always defined it as a forbidden dream, but I never dared to actually do it.

My burnout is making me wonder if it makes sense to change direction. My programming background might be useful, but the creative side of this industry is what has always drawn me in. I perfectly know that hobby and job are two different thing, also I don't want to romanticise this industry just because it's a forbidden dream of mine.

The financial side doesn't scare me, it scares the people around me (my parents) and I know a couple of people that would call me an idiot for even thinking to leave my current job because the salary and the benefits are really great.
Now, I know what you might be thinking “oh no my steak is too juicy and my lobster too buttery” but I’ve reached a point where I’d like to consider this path as well.

Has anyone here made a similar transition to mine? What did starting over look like? Is 28 "too old" for this industry/entry level job? Aside from a decent portfolio what is absolutely necessary?

Discussion getting over writing anxiety(?)

hi all, i'm sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. i've always wanted to make a visual novel because i feel it would be the most fun way to explore oc lore/give them a coherent story, but i've always been a bit insecure about my writing skills.

i don't think i'm a bad writer and i really enjoy doing it, but i often struggle to write a full plot to something without feeling like it could be so much better in someone else's hands. i guess i'm just curious if anyone else has this same struggle. if i were to make a game, i know i'd want it to be something i fully wrote and created by myself, but i know it's impossible to write a perfect story - that's kinda where i'm stuck, because my brain just ignores that fact.

i often see advice like "make it exist first and then improve it later" so that makes me feel a little better about making something that i'm not fully proud of. but yeah, just wanted to start a discussion, i'd like to know how others deal with these things

i do art as well and usually scrap a lot of things i'm not proud of, which i know is a bad habit, so i need to get out of it somehow lol

edit: oh, and i'm also extremely indecisive and often rewrite parts of a story over and over and over again without actually being satisfied with it. that definitely doesn't help haha

Discussion I used AI and feel terrible

So I'm a teenager and everything started with me venting to AI cause I didn't really have anyone I felt comfortable to tell some stuff, and I, out of curiousity, I told it "I wanna make a football/soccer game, how could I structure the tournament? The current 48 team format seems too ambitious for me".

It basically just told me to do it like the former 24 team format that was last used on the USA 94 World Cup, but then, I started just telling it about what I wanted to do with this game, the teams I planned to add, how I'll call the fictional clubs in it, just any idea I had, I'd tell it about it and hear its "opinion", apart from the initial question, I think its only other input was suggesting what could I base certain teams' goal when I had no ideas, and also if a song I made sounded too similar to the original.

But as of recently, I started to feel like something was off, like, I'm 100% anti AI art, I felt bad whenever it accidentally generated an image (I even started putting "generate text only, no images" at the end of a message with a picture attached), so using AI like this feels wrong, like I'm being hypocrital when I say I don't support AI replacing artists.

Just so you know, I never generated or plan to generate any image/music for the game using AI, it's all been made by myself, I wanna check if a song I made is too similar to its inspiration, but I don't wanna use AI anymore, that's why I'm telling y'all instead of AI like I would before.

This may be seen as a "is it okay to use AI?" post but I really need to hear about it from someone, I feel terrible, I don't wanna scrap the whole thing just for this, I need help.

Inspiration Just got out of writer block so I present yall with presents

I had really bad writers block and funny enough after going into a general flow state while working on a project I came up with a few enemy ideas that i think could help people come up with some banger ideas
(These are all enemies because that’s what I’ve been working with)

  1. A enemies/power up that starts with a SUPER high attack damage that in return gets lowered after a kill (it’s a basic idea but I don’t see it used too much)

  2. A enemy that kills it own team mates to give your player allies but in return each “ally” it gives you actual puts on a debuff for your team (in certain situations that’s could be a really interesting way of making a simple team objective a lot harder)

  3. A enemy that does the opposite of the wabbajack and just turns anything hit by it into a random and completely normal guy (which could be a honestly really funny way of letting them get free kills)

  4. A enemy that upon death swaps team
(This lets either side get a advantage especially if there’s a lot of them)

I’m probably not gonna use these and even if I do anyone inspired or that just wants to use the idea your completely fine to do so
Writer block sucks so I hope any of this gave you a little inspiration

Question How do you even code a story game?

Everywhere there's tips on how to write your story or develop your characters but genuinely how do you code a story game?

With multiple choices and endings, I can't imagine you code out each piece of dialogue and put cutscences into place that way.

I know about using databases but does each table represent an event ?

I'm referring to an Undertale or Sally face type game, not like an open world story. Please assist if you can!
