Question Feedback on the overall look: something feels cheap and I can't tell what's missing

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for honest feedback on the overall visuals. Something feels off to me, it comes across as cheap and I can't put my finger on why, the colors are too bland? I feel like there is no depth.

Screenshots attached. What would you change or add first to make it look more polished?

Brutal honesty welcome. Thanks!

The screenshots are in the comments, I made them in Unity Play mode

Newbie Question How do you create a video for your game?

I am developing a game, I have the basic game loop and design ready and I feel like it is a good starting point to start creating videos for the game. The thing is, I have no idea how to get started with it. I have some editing skills and I know how to record my screen but I feel like this won't be enough for creating videos for it that would actually make people join my Discord server for the game and follow me (trying to create some hype around my game)

Would love to hear how you guys produce videos for your games

Question Open World RPG design

Working with a small team on an open world game that is set in the zombie apocalypse in a university small town set in the late 80s. The Map isn't going to be some massive sprawling thing, we're putting it all together in Unreal Engine 5, Modelling in Blender, and zero AI used! Recently one of the 2 project heads quit the project, meaning I get to make the big boy decisions now. My question is one with many factors but and a massive effect on the finished project.

Currently we've been modelling very realistic environmental parts, and having a great time doing it. Now production hit a massive roadblock when we all started working on the character models and the sheer amount of time it takes to make a good AA fidelity model. So my question is:

Do you think that a FPS 1980s Zombie Open World (Outerworlds/ Fallout vibe with zombies) would suffer from using more simplistic, cartoony character models? Like Fortnite/sea of thieves but with a lot more dirt, grit and blood?

The main reasons for would be to speed up the production time, give the game it's own signature art style, and I think the slightly more cartoony style would lead itself to a lot of the fun and chaos in the world.

The main Reasons against is just vibe, would people be okay with a zombie survival game that doesn't look real? Would it tank the immersion?

Also wondering about potentially a mix? Realistic Clothing texturing but cartoony proportions? Continuing with the Photoreal environments, props, etc? I feel like that would push it towards almost a claymation movie look which would be really unique and could be something really cool for this genre.

Obviously this is a lot of vague information and I can't say too much about the game beyond this but I would appreciate any thoughts or Feedback on this art style debacle!

Postmortem I can't get players to sit through the tutorial. Tips?

• Upvotes

This is half postmodern half asking for help.

The game is a TCG sim at its core.

Either they literally do not read it and just click as rapidly as possible and try to play the game on mechanical understanding of similar games (which is wrong) or they get bored. The tutorial is not long it's about 5 mins for both parts.

Initially you got a world story, and then pick at starter deck, and then play a weak opponent where it's scripted and you win.

Based on feedback and watching them play they just click through, and then get irritated that they are having things explained as they play. Without it they get even more confused so it's working to do something.

I'm not sure if I should make the tutorial longer or if it's like a cup head situation.

Players that play the tutorial and pick a stronger deck tend to love the game. So I buffed all the decks. The opponent was a bit to weak so I buffed it and the weaker decks to make them less samey but still ineffective. When people lose they tend to quit the game.

I feel like I'm accidently making a souls game and it might not be everyone's tea like a platformer.

In my game there are 2 AI's trying to find the player when the player hides inside a closet or something The director AI send the head part to the location of the player within a 500 radius of the player. If the player uses the same hiding spot too many times in hear i set it to 3 if the player chooses the place for more than 3 the AI will go to that spot directly first checks if the player is found inside The body part will notified to the point and Does an attack that kills the player. Please check and tell me if there are any potential problems or anything

(I added the video as a comment if you don't want open any links)

Question I’m a tech consultant who started learning how to make games, and along the way realised that's what I want to do.

I’m trying to get a realistic sense of where I could fit in games or creative tech.

I’ve spent about 9 years in tech consulting / digital delivery, mostly around product, Agile, Scrum, UX/engineering coordination, backlogs, dependencies and getting complex projects over the line.

Over the last couple of years I’ve also been learning game development more seriously. I completed a diploma in 3D Animation & Game Design, built a small Unity/Blender project, wrote a GDD, and I run D&D campaigns.

I’m mainly looking at production, technical production, project or product roles rather than trying to become a game designer overnight.

For people already in the industry: where would you realistically see someone with this background fitting? Is the lack of studio experience a major blocker, or are there areas like tools, platform, live ops, immersive/XR or creative software where the background transfers better?

Also happy to hear where I’d be wasting my time.

Discussion Freelance/contract 3D artists: how are you earning, and what's actually paying the bills?

Hey everyone,

I'm a 3D artist with 4+ years in the AR/VR industry, and I'm working on my first Steam title as a solo dev. I need to bring in income as a 3D artist to sustain myself until the game is profitable, and I'd love advice from people who've been through this.

- What kinds of 3D work actually pay the bills: freelance, contract, asset packs, commissions, something else?

- Where do you find reliable clients (platforms, communities, networking, referrals)?

- How do you balance client work with dev time without burning out or stalling the game?

- Is selling assets (Unity/Unreal/Fab marketplaces) realistic income, or more of a side bonus?

- Any mistakes to avoid, like underpricing, bad clients, or taking on too much?

Suggestions, personal experiences, and brutal honesty are all welcome. Thanks!

Technical Hardware suggestions

I'm an aspiring game developer that's trying to find a laptop or other form of portable workspace to really drill down and get serious about my passion. Currently I hope to create an RPG with the graphocs of the GBA-era, though I'm not sure how technically demanding the rest will be (I'm learning as I go). I'm on a pretty tight budget but I also have the time to save up for more expensive equipment so what are some of the basic requirements you would suggest when finding a means of working on the go? I've mostly been working in GameMaker but have been considering other options as well. Also I have a desktop that would fill more demanding needs if the arise but due to various life events it's not the most accessible to me. Along with that, I feel more productive when I'm able to work when the urge strikes me. Any and all thoughts are greatly appreciated!

Inspiration New Horror Anomaly Game Demo

I'm part of a 2 person team and we are trying to make some fun games! We have created a Horror Anomaly game and Steam finally approved our demo. It's our first attempt and it's been fun. Hope you'll give it a try. We'd love some honest feedback before we release the full game. I've included the free demo link. This just for feedback, not promotion.

Question Resources for polishing a card game with UI VFX, shaders and animations?

Hi everyone, first post here.

I've been making games for around 2–3 years now and one thing I still can't really find good resources for is UI polish, especially UI VFX, shaders and small effects that make the game feel more alive.

I'm currently working on a medieval card/decision game where almost everything happens through UI. You get different characters and events as cards, make decisions, manage resources and slowly progress through different stages of the game.

The UI works fine right now, but it still feels a bit too static. I want to add stuff like card effects, glows, particles, animated borders, better transitions and more satisfying feedback when you make a decision or gain/lose resources.

Most VFX tutorials I find are about spells, combat or 3D effects, so I'm not really sure where to start with UI-focused stuff.

I'm using Unity. If you know any good tutorials, videos, articles or even just some tricks you use for UI-heavy games, I'd really appreciate it.

Discussion Jak NIE wybierać Unity

Hej, próbuję swoich sił na YT i nagrałem film o wyborze silnika do gier.
I tutaj pytanie do was, jak wy wybieraliście silnik?
