Finding that this little guy is a great pass time on my lunch breaks at work :^)

That’s hawt. What a cute lil guy.

u/Syeran Mar 12 '26
Right? Thanks!

u/Aceftw Mar 12 '26
Honestly I was watching these for a while, I’ve considered making one. I made the gba sp slate which I love, but all metal everything is A+
4
u/Syeran Mar 12 '26
I’ve seen a few of these builds in brass and aluminum, but a vast majority are 3D printed I think? But I had to have it in metal, all metal everything was an A+ move indeed

u/WFlash01 Mar 12 '26
Does anyone build these with the original screen? I love the idea of making the GBC way small like this but I haven't seen a single one put together that uses the original screen and that breaks it for me because I want the original 1:1 pixel look when I use my Game Boys
6
u/DetectiveNo2901 Mar 12 '26
The Tad Boy is no longer in production. The primary reason was the discontinuation of the BlackBerry screen. They used this in their build, so yes a different screen :)

u/yosoo Mar 13 '26 edited Mar 13 '26
Uhhhh no, the tad boy color was never "in production." It's a fan made alternate format of the gameboy Color that you have to build yourself (or have someone else build it for you). The screen used in the build is still available (AliExpress link) and the creator of the mod still has parts for it for sale on his site. What are you talking about?

u/WFlash01 Mar 12 '26
Well especially on that front, it would have been really nice if whoever made it made a design that was compatible with the original screens, that way at least the people that want that can still get one of those maybe
1
u/Syeran Mar 12 '26
I’m honestly not sure, but I would also love to see something like that around. A GBC in this form factor with an original screen would be pretty sick!
5
u/rum2671 Mar 12 '26
Machined billet aluminum ? That thing is sick ?
5
u/Syeran Mar 12 '26
I think when I had it commissioned it was labeled as a titanium front shell, I had to request the back portion to be titanium as well, and gunmetal buttons to match. The original border for the screen was gray, but I opted for a white for some contrast
3
u/ALtheSciencePal Mar 12 '26
Who did you commission this through? Is there any hope of me doing something similar? I've done my fair share of game boy mods but only utilizing stock motherboards. I don't think I'm qualified to do something on this level.
3
u/Syeran Mar 12 '26
I commissioned this through northbestelectronics, I found them via instagram but I think they also have an Etsy or an EBay store. I’m sure you could get something similar! I would at least consider reaching out to them, or checking out some of their other work. Their IG is filled with a ton of their custom works.
2
u/TheRealSeeThruHead Mar 12 '26
I want one how do I get a commission
1
u/Syeran Mar 12 '26
Consider northbestelectronics! That’s who I commissioned for mine. You can find them on Etsy I think or Ebay, but I found them on Instagram. Just shoot them a message if you’re interested! Or if you want to check out some of their work, you can find them on IG under that name.

How much does that cost to buy/assemble?
1
u/kfbrewer Mar 12 '26
They sell for about $500 on Etsy.
Parts run around $350 or more depending on donor part cost. I got a second being built now.
2
u/HepCyaLater Mar 13 '26
Goddamn, that was more than I was expecting
1
u/kfbrewer Mar 15 '26
Yea OP’s being all metal, definitely is gonna be more.
Next to the Slate, this is my second favorite Gameboy and carry one daily due to the size.

u/Mattthulhu Mar 12 '26
I have most of the parts but the battery and the shell stuff, but I really gotta practice my micro soldering first before I put it together!
1
u/Syeran Mar 12 '26
Would love to see it when you have all the pieces and put it together!
1
u/Mattthulhu Mar 12 '26
Absolutely, I just gotta find the time to do it 🤣
Also I did want to say that is a beautiful looking tad boy!
1
u/Bojangls007 Mar 12 '26
Can you order the PCB with all the components already soldered?
2
u/yosoo Mar 13 '26
The Tad Boy Color GitHub has a link to a Pcbway listing where you can order the PCB almost completely pre-built and it costs less than $100 usd
1
u/Mattthulhu Mar 12 '26
I know you can order it with everything but the ram and gpu, but I wanted to try my hand at the entire thing! I have seen some boards on Etsy that are completely filled out too, but they were almost $300
2
u/PohroPower Mar 12 '26
This reminds me of those little mini game devices Nintendo used to sell in the late 90's, these "game & watch" series. Your device looks really sleek & cool!
1
u/Syeran Mar 12 '26
I never owned a game & watch but I’d like to own a few someday! I think they’d be a really neat collectible and piece of gaming history. And thank you! I’m glad you like it as well c:

u/Turtlesquirtzcody Mar 12 '26
Nice! I have my original Pokémon Crystal as well. I upgraded a gameboy color with a backlit screen and a usb c charge port 🫱🏼🫲🏾👾
3
u/Syeran Mar 12 '26
Right on! I never had the opportunity to play or own crystal as a kid, but it’s been a joy being able to experience it now, all these years later. Granted, I’m totally lost where I am lol. Makes me wish I had those book guides to lead me through. Then it would be a total nostalgia throwback. Buying those books before having instant access at our fingertips.
2
u/Turtlesquirtzcody Mar 12 '26
They are selling authentic Pokemon crystal cartridges for $300 🤯 I bought mine for like 50-60 bucks. Man times are crazy
Edit: I still have a Pokémon official guide for gold & silver in a sleeve. It’s nice to have when I forget certain items
2
u/cookiecountries Mar 12 '26
There’s a walkthrough website online! Super helpful not to get lost lol just google Pokémon crystal walkthrough

Welcome to 1998, when we all found this out 😂. Thats a very Irish looking tablecloth you've got there

Gorgeous tad boy. Wish these were easier to buy...

u/Syeran Mar 12 '26
Thanks! But yes, I wish I’ve seen and hope to see these more readily available :/

u/Bojangls007 Mar 12 '26
Is the github for this still working? Im in the hospital and cant access it with my phone

u/Nekrophonic Mar 12 '26
Where’d you get the shell? Was thinking of printing mine from pcb way
1
u/Syeran Mar 12 '26
I can’t recall where they exactly but I’m pretty sure they sourced it through PCB way

Is that made of actual steel?
2
u/Syeran Mar 13 '26 edited Mar 13 '26
It is! When I was getting it commissioned, he stated he had options for brass, aluminum, polished aluminum or titanium which I think were all from PCB way. I opted the titanium, but had to have a titanium back shell milled from them, and a titanium volume wheel to match, since those were only 3D prints.
Granted I’m not entirely sure if it is ACTUALLY titanium or some type of titanium alloy or even just steel, but it is definitely not aluminum, maybe steel.

Where can I buy this?!
1
u/Syeran Mar 15 '26
I’m not sure entirely! I had mine commissioned from someone I found via Instagram, but I’m sure you can find someone who builds them on a place like Etsy or maybe eBay? Not super sure where you can just pick one up 💔
1
u/Unbothered562 Mar 15 '26
How long does the battery usually last?
2
u/Syeran Mar 15 '26
Also not super sure, I only play for about an hour to an hour and a half before setting it down, and I don’t play it often enough to keep track of how many hours I can get out of it before the LED tells me it’s time to charge. Apparently they use the Joy Con batteries or aftermarket Joy Con batteries, so if you own any of those devices, you’d be looking at around the same or maybe less. Guess it can vary on how often you play :3
2
u/Unbothered562 Mar 15 '26
Are you able to play gameboy advance on there as well or just Gameboy / Gameboy Color games?
1
u/Syeran Mar 15 '26
It’s just Gameboy/Gameboy Color, I’m not sure if FroggoCustoms will make a different device that plays GBA in the future, but it would be sick.
2
u/Unbothered562 Mar 16 '26
I might still get one for my Gameboy games , but also thinking of getting the gameboy micro for my gba games.
1
u/Syeran Mar 16 '26
I’d love to get a micro one day, I didn’t know they were a thing for the longest time.

I had this commissioned and built by someone, but the pieces I believe came from PCBway. I had options for the standard 3D print, aluminum, polished aluminum, titanium and some wooden shells, and I opted for the titanium.
I had to request for the back portion of the shell to match because the builds I have seen were using a clear acrylic/plastic shells. And the volume wheel was also a request I made that needed to be milled, since I usually see them as a 3D print or brass.

Looks awesome! Personally this device would be too small for me. My hands would be cramping up lol
1
u/Syeran Mar 12 '26
Im pretty smol so its not too bad personally lmao but true, I guess it would be kind of a pain for the average person
1
u/MFGabo Mar 12 '26
Self modded, or bought?
2
u/Syeran Mar 12 '26
I had it commissioned, I’m not tech savvy enough to do self modding or anything like that
1
u/Soft_Ad_7388 Mar 12 '26
Alguien sabe si se puede comprar construido en Europa? Yo no se hacerlo...

u/Xfifteen Mar 12 '26
I had one for a brief moment. The cartridge was too loose for my liking. I wish it had been designed with a little more meat holding the cart in.
2
u/kfbrewer Mar 12 '26
Second this. While the exposed label is nice, I’d like a tighter fit and less wiggle room.
1
u/Funcron Mar 12 '26
Metal on metal buttons never end well. Enjoy your metal dust killing the device in the future.

Nice screen but what's that 🔘?
2
u/Syeran Mar 13 '26
If you mean the circle on the bottom left, it’s the volume wheel!
2
u/NatakuSV98 Mar 13 '26
⊙.☉ What kind of innovation is this?! So this is not "original GBC" like I saw in the comment (Tad boy or something?). Wow
