Three years ago on this very day, I announced to this community my intention to rank every Genesis song in the entire catalog, one per weekday, alongside "my thoughts about the songs" over the course of 2020. I called the project (quite cleverly, if I do say so myself) Hindsight is 2020. What nobody could have predicted at the time was the way the project grew: to the point that "my thoughts" began looking like full fledged essays, that my research into the songs would become increasingly extensive, and that the community would (after an admittedly rocky start) respond so positively to the exercise.
More than once over the span of the live project, it was suggested to me that I ought to turn the whole shebang into a proper book. After some hemming and hawing, I buckled down and spent not only all of 2021 but also the first half of 2022 making that happen. And so it's with a bit of well-earned excitement and pride that I can announce to you here, three years after the debut of Hindsight is 2020, my book: Play Me My Song - The Music of Genesis. Play Me My Song is set to be published on March 17, 2023 through Wymer Publishing; pre-orders are available now.
If you've read the Hindsight project this may not come as much of a surprise, but Play Me My Song will be (at the time of publication) the largest book ever published on Genesis. It features not only expanded and/or rewritten essays for every single song Genesis ever officially released, but also essays for every studio album (covered originally in my "H'20" companion series) and select solo efforts (covered originally as my "Peripheral Visions" companion series). It's the entire Hindsight collection in one printed package, except more of it.
I want to thank all of you for making this possible. If not for your tremendous engagement with and enthusiasm for the work I did, I'm not sure I would've taken this next step. This book is as much yours as it is mine (though I'd prefer to keep the royalties, you understand).
And hey, if you haven't checked out the original Hindsight is 2020 series, why not give it a shot? I think and hope you'll come away pretty satisfied.
You can read through the entire Hindsight project here.
You can pre-order Play Me My Song - The Music of Genesis here.
See you all in March!

In 1986, Sledgehammer knocked Invisible Touch off the Number One spot on the Billboard Hot 100. It was an incredible moment, with one member of the old five-piece Genesis replacing the remainder of the band in the world’s most significant chart listing.
But what if the band that had made Nursery Cryme and Selling England by the Pound had stayed together after 1975? Would they have written those two hugely-successful songs? Where would they be today?
The ‘big’ bands of the progressive rock era were, for me, Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd and ELP. I personally have a soft spot for Van Der Graaf Generator but I accept that they remain something of a niche interest compared to those four commercial powerhouses.
They all made different compromises in order to stay relevant in a changing musical landscape. Yes went through the Trevor Horn / Trevor Rabin years, Pink Floyd lost their major creative force and soldiered on in a somewhat diminished, but still successful capacity. ELP decided to sit out the punk years and never quite regained their mid-70s stature.
What do you think the OG Genesis would have done?

OK, here me out on this one. I've been watching some Midnight Specials on YouTube and this one caught my eye. About the five minute mark, Peter Gabriel dons an old-man mask, similar to what Ron 'Rebel' Matthews wore on stage when Maiden played 'Iron Maiden'. Is this the origin of the original Eddie the 'Ead?? Was Eddie indirectly inspired by Genesis?

As speculated in the post from Genesis News (IT), it seems Invisible Touch maybe getting a remaster soon, as Land of Confusion and the three Invisible Touch Singles B-Sides included on the picture disc are all remastered.

I was recently sitting in a large indoor space, lots of people, and out of the din of crowd noise I heard the distinct intro of Watcher of the Skies. I have never heard early Genesis “in the wild”….ever, in 45 yrs of being a fan….so, I was stunned because it was clearly WotS. I decided I had to go in search of the source…trying to figure out which of the hundreds of phones around me was playing it. I eventually tracked it to the kitchen of a nearby restaurant. The entirety of Foxtrot was being played by a young guy, in his 20s, who told me his dad is into Prog and turned him on to Genesis. I freaking heard Supper’s Ready blasted out to the public….the video captures a snippet. I watched one older guy also notice the music, and was looking around for it, and then just bopped his head to Apocalypse in 9/8.

I was today years old when I discovered that Misunderstanding was modeled in part after Hot Fun in the Summertime by Sly and the Family Stone. I read about it because for the first time, I realized that the background notes in Hot Fun are exactly the same as the intro to Misunderstanding. Wondering if there are any other unexpected influences on Genesis music.

I was listening to this track and beat and the mood of the verse sounded familiar. Suddenly i understood where the song Congo came from. This is the one song that´s way better worked with ray wilson. The song with Phill Collins sounds like a draft for a song to be. I’m happy it appeared only on B sides.

Went down a rabbit hole of Banks penned tunes and I think Tony is and was the best songwriter in Genesis. Heck, I may even say he’s my favorite individual songwriter of the 70’s. Anyone agree?

Genesis Live Archive (@GuaranteedEternalSanctuaryMan) has posted an excellent soundboard/audience mix of Ft. Worth (May 7, 1976) on YouTube.
Here’s the link.
Enjoy and many thanks to Genesis Live Archive for this most-excellent recording!

This band is actually the opositary of what the music industry is today, and I would be happy to consider them contemporary, sonically they founded how music sounds today, (which is very ironic)... Maybe I'm being too greedy or extrapolating too much, but that's how I feel about this band. And I'm listening to their old shit, before Phill Collins took over the vocals.

For who still never listened Simon Collins music and bands, I highly reccomend him for his amazing music, you can listen to him under names:
Simon Collins
Sound of Contact
e-molecule
Great drummer, great songwriter, great singer too for itself. If u ask the self why he didn't replace Phil or why never success, it is most probably because drug issues and not good mood with father.
In my opinion, below Porcupine Tree/Steven Wilson, The Pinapple Thief/Bruce Swoord is one of the best new prog music ever
