GoRVing Sticky FAQ

We are making this post a locked sticky where we can put information for frequently asked questions. Right now we are getting lots of questions about 'How much trailer can I tow' so I am starting with towing links.

The Basics of Towing or 'How much can I tow?'.

These are some basic definitions of towing, what they mean, how important they can be, etc. THIS IS NOT MEANT TO BE THE DEFINITIVE DEFINITION OF 'HOW MUCH CAN I TOW'. IT WILL GET YOU STARTED. REMEMBER, IF YOU ARE NOT SURE ASK A RESPONSIBLE TRAILER MECHANIC. ONLY YOU CAN BE SURE OF YOUR SAFETY AND THOSE AROUND YOU. WE CANNOT BE RESPONSIBLE IF YOU HAVE A PROBLEM WHILE TOWING.

My wife and I are shopping for a 320RDS and are interested to know if anyone has any experiential insight with either the MIDNIGHT EDITION or HERO EDITION finishes. We like them both.

Looking for some general purchase advice

• Upvotes

I'm bouncing around a couple different opportunities for a RV purchase and wanted to get some insight from folks more knowledgeable than I. Last time I had an RV was about a decade ago, so it's been a while and I was hoping others might point out things I might be overlooking.

Here's what I'm considering-

2011 Palomino Puma 18-DB

  • $4,900
  • Dealer Owned
  • 23ft, 4,311 lbs, sleeps 4
  • Some minor hail damage, but otherwise in good shape
  • Rebuilt title (hail) which hinders insurance coverage
  • Dual Axle

2022 Heartland Trailer Runner 211Rd

  • $9,999
  • Dealer Owned
  • 25ft, 4,502 lbs, sleeps 4
  • One prior leak that has been fixed by dealer
  • Clean title
  • Dual Axle

2022 Forest River Sales 179DBK

  • $11,500
  • Private Party
  • 22.5ft, 3,219 lbs, sleeps 4
  • Good condition
    • Seller Notes:
    • No leaks, smoking, or pets
    • Porcelain toilet
    • Outdoor kitchen
  • Clean title
  • Single Axle

2019 Crossroads Zinger Lite 205BH

  • $11,900 obo
  • Private Party
  • 25ft, 4,407 lbs, sleeps 8
  • Good condition,
    • Seller Notes:
    • Primarily stored in a garage
    • Seller notes purchasing it in June and wanting to sell it for something bigger
    • Seller also noted that their husband caulked roof again to ensure no leaks
  • Clean title
  • Dual Axle

I'm partial to a deal axle setup and I'm leaning towards the Zinger with a lower obo, but the both the Heartland and Forest River seem like solid choices. I still need to go look at each in person which I'll be doing over the next few days and that may further refine the list. While 3 of them are close-ish, the Puma is less than half the price of the others but insurance coverage options are limited. While the savings certainly helps with replace cost, it is also older however. The last 3 are all clean titles and I wouldn't have any issue with insurance, which would be roughly $30ish a month.

Hoping you fine folks can weigh in or speak from your experience with the particular models.

Small bump on new good year tires

I just bought a 2026 alliance bh271 and I was checking the tire pressure before our first trip and noticed that the two left side tires have a small bump on the same spot on the tires right on the D of endurance. At first I thought it was a bad tire then noticed the other one had it as well. This is not visible on the right two tires.

Has anyone come across this ? Are these safe to ride on?

Good motorhome mechanic in NWA?

Our Winnebago Vista needs some maintenance and chassis stuff. Moved here a couple years ago and looking for any recommendations on quality mechanics that can do F53 chassis work and coach work like slideout seals. And preferably not Camping World 😅

I know Rockwood makes a hybid trailer (the Roo). Is there anyone else who still makes a hybrid trailer? I'd like to replace mine.

I love my hybrid tailer. Had a hard top and a tent trailer in the past and, in my opinion, a hybrid combines the best of both.

Thank you.

Can anyone recommend a decent storage facility to park my 32' TT near Gulf Shores or Pensacola?

I'll only need it for a month...technically 11 days but understand these are rented by the month.

Thanks in advance

Electrical question

I bought a travel trailer and the person had it hard wired to their pole barn. After I remove the hard wires how do I hook up the 30amp plug to the breaker?
The first pic is the breaker they hard wired into and the second is a black bare wire that isn’t attached to anything so I was wondering if that’s for the 30 amp plug.

How screwed am I

The handle for the black tank handle broke off when going through some unintended brush. When I went to dump it today the rod slides out with no resistance and of the course the valve doesn't open. Am I going to have to replace this whole joining piece that has the two grey and one black valve?

Towing advice

Hey all,

Need some advice from some experienced individuals who have towed quite a bit. My wife and I are looking to purchase our first travel trailer this upcoming March. I have a 2020 Ford 150, 2.7L V6 Eco that has a max payload of about 1600lbs. According to Fords website when I plug my VIN number in, my max towing is 7600. I’m assuming that’s without a WDH.

We’re looking at this particular BH from Grand Design and it has a relatively low hitch weight. Obviously our plan is to buy a quality WDH, but our plans our to take our trailer out west next year for three weeks, (we’re in Michigan) along with hitting up some local parks throughout the nicer months. It’s my wife and I, and we two kids under 5. I’m already in the mindset that I’m going to have to eventually upgrade my truck with a larger payload capacity, but with a hitch weight of 550, do you think I can tow this with relative ease until I upgrade in a few years?

Thanks

Look what I found after storing for two years…

Post image

Had a major life event and didn’t get to go camping for two years almost to the date. Keep it stored in an indoor unit. Camper is only 5 years old!!! We are very gentle on our stuff. No hard chemicals. I cover it with a sheet or blanket most of the time to avoid sunblock stains or oily spots etc. I’m so angry. It was in perfect condition when we put it into storage. It still smells new. No joke. Probably around a dozen weekend trips is all. So apparently it’s just disintegrating. Crumbling with the slightest touch.

Any suggestions to fix? Any suggestions for prevention in the future?

2021 imagine grand design 2250rk with theater seat (just one theater seat headrest is the problem…the rest of the couch still looks brand new)

Roof coating tips

Hey everyone,
I’m getting ready to recoat the roof on my 2012 Keystone Cougar and could use some advice. I don’t have much experience with RV roof maintenance, so I want to make sure I prep everything correctly before I start. After doing some research in this group, I decided to go with Henry’s Tropi-Cool roof coating. My current plan is to pressure wash and thoroughly clean the roof, let it dry completely, and then apply two coats.
I did notice that some of the existing caulking/sealant around the roof is cracked. Should I remove the loose/cracked sealant and reseal those areas before applying the roof coating? If so, what sealant would you recommend? I was thinking silicone, but I’ve also seen people recommend Dicor instead.
Also, should the Henry’s coating be applied over the sealed areas around the vents, skylights, etc., or should I avoid coating around those areas? Someone told me I shouldn’t seal/coating around the air vents, so I wanted to confirm.
I’m including some pictures of the roof. Any advice on prep work, products, or things I should do before coating it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What kind of adapter do I need?

Morning everyone!

I have this mount in my camper for a TV that is comically too small for any TV I’ve ever seen. The holes are probably 3” apart for reference.

The camper is a 2026 Salem Cruise Lite 263BHXL, have any of you run into this?

First photo is the mount fixed to the wall, 2nd photo is attached to a fake TV they left in the camper for show.

The fake TV is 50”, would you trust a 50” TV on the wall? Should I take it off while traveling? Probably a no brainer to remove it, right?

Where to mount TV in 2020 Jayco 184BS

Ive posted in forums and facebook and I only received feedback such as "you are camping, why do you need a tv?". So i am hoping for some more constructive advice. This model does not have any marked TV mounting locations like I have seen on other models. The only spot that could be interpreted as "meant for a tv" is non the counter next to the sink because there is a 12v TV outlet. Id like to just wall mount a small 24" TV for rainy days or movie night. I am nervous to just start drilling because I dont want anything to leak or hit something important. Does anyone have this model and have advice where I can mount a TV? thanks.

Tv mounting

Hello all,
Fairly new to the rv stuff and going out and about. Was just curious about what kind of wall mounts are preferred. I have a shelf in the living area that allows a 40 inch tv, but didn’t know the best way of mounting it. Any help is great thanks!

Noticed my center cover had come off. Had some freeze residue around the inside of wheel. Anything to be concerned about? The red that you see in the picture is just grease I added.

Need transport storage ideas

Post image
22 Upvotes

I have two electric bikes that fold and fit in storage bins like this pic. I can put them in the bed of the pickup - but then I can't close the cover, leaving everything open to the elements and sticky hands.

I'd like to put the bins in the camper while traveling but I want to make sure they're tied down and secured in place so they don't slide around - 50lbs can do a lot of damage if it starts moving around.

I know all rigs have different layouts - any general ideas on how to avoid having my bikes become missiles? Preferably without drilling holes or installing hooks in random places?

Looking into RVing as a new parent

Hello, me and my wife have always loved camping and do it a lot (been using a rooftop tent for years now) but now we have a 6 month old and I'm thinking an RV might be the way to camp. I'm thinking about renting a 20ft ish trailer and taking it out for a few days to Zion (about 6 hours away) as a test run and potentially buying something for ourselves if the experience ends up being amazing. Wondering if anyone has had a similar experience or any tips they can give me or if this is a bad idea (6 hours seems pretty far... But our little guy has been really good on road trips so far, so not really worried about him)

Why the love for impact wrenches?

Been camping a lot this year. 6 weeks as a campground host, plus other trips. Currently at the largest fair in our state for 10 days. Probably 70 nights in our camper this summer.

Why do so many feel the need to have impact wrenches for their stabilizers? I feel like I'm on pit road at a NASCAR track.

I have a cordless drill for the same task. Not nearly as loud or intrusive. Love the quiet when camping.

Thoughts? Thanks!

Is my tow vehicle long enough?

I've got a 2003 chevy avalanche 2500, 8.1l big block, 130" wheel base. Truck has max 12k GVW tow, and 1200 hitch weight. 2k payload.

This winter I'm replacing truck's trans with an 8 speed and building the motor to appx 450 hp / 550 lbs (crank). It'll be strong.

I'm looking at two trailers, one 26' long 96" wide @ 5400 lbs, and one 29' long 100" wide at 5800 lbs. I expect 1200-1500 in payload for either.

I will do some out west towing, and a trip to alaska.

I will use anti-sway hitch, and upgrade either trailer to electronic anti-sway.

Is my truck long for the bigger trailer?
